Title: In Theory: Combining Manual transmission with a torque converter
Post by: imebgo on November 06, 2006, 09:14:48 AM
Can this be done to remove the need for a clutch, you read about driving techniques which enable manual shifts without using a clutch, so in theory would this be possible, i.e replacing the clutch to allow the car to idle at a stand still and reduce stress on the gearbox during clutchless changes?

Hi James,

Mazda tried a similar thing in the 70\'s on the RX-5, called a TQX box, some information on ausrotary, see http://ausrotary.dntinternet.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=34910&highlight=tqx

Close, im looking to eliminate the clutch altogether if possible, playing around with ideas similar to Lencodrive (http://www.lencoracing.com/LNDRV.HTML).

Clutches in my situation are a pain in the ass, and complexities of autoboxes can lead to problems at higher power, so I was thinking a bit laterally and maybe thought a torque converter could eliminate the clutch and allow a standard manual gearbox to operate correctly, even at higher power.

AFAIK the original NSU Ro80 had a setup that had a torque converter in it but I still vaguely remember that they also had a clutch (which was electrically operated if you push the gearlever down a bit).

I think your best bet maybe an uprated slushbox...

Yea, I have an uprated auto, for my FD but I want to look into getting an FC next year and wanted to see if it was possible at all and maybe try it out on an FC!

The theory does not sound to bad to me! :)

James

I apologise for jumping on your thread, but I\'ve got an auto that will need some work on it eventually.  Could you describe what work has gone into it and by whom.

Cheers

I got the box second hand of a guy on \'http://www.fduk.org/forum/ (http://www.fduk.org/forum/)\' The members screen name is sicknote, you would need to contact him for the exact details of how the gearbox was rebuilt.  As far as I am aware the guys that did it did a good job becuase his FD was pretty 400hp+ powerful when he swapped it out for a manual.

Cheers James

I\'ve got a feeling I might bump into him around MOT time, if I\'m thinking of the right chap.
