Now ive read countless threads on here about insuring an rx7 (anthony\'s post with that all inclusive long list looked very helpful in narrowing down the bogger names) and i wanna make sure that i am likely to be able to afford the insuance before i buy the car this time. Got stung last time with the mr2 - import, modified, bought then looked for insurance :S stupid me.
i want a 3rd gen, import and would be modifying it so the insurance would need to allow for modifications (nothing under the bonnet really, maybe filter) but bodykit & alloys.
Do any of you guys (with your more experiance in rx terratory than me) think i will be able to find fully comp insurance low crime post code for the car for under around £1600?
If so, any companies that you guys have had good quotes from?
(dont mean to sound like im repeating a soooo comman asked question but this is the only place i could think to ask about insuring :) )
Appreciate any help guys.
Chris
oh, also no claims & clean licence.
Hay mate, I\'m 22, 2ncb. 1 crash, still pending so classed as a fault claim. No points/convictions. Just short of £1100 with Admiral.
So the answer is yeh the car is possible, dunno about after mods though.
Admiral/Elephant (same company) can give you a good price without mods, and will accept a few although have some funny ways like dont mind exhausts, but wont insure induction kits, but air filters are ok?!
Id say just give them a ring and get some quotes, they shouldnt have any problem with bodykit/alloys, a maybe a couple of small engine mods. If I remember rightly they sometimes have a limit of number of mods you can have in total. I was with them with bodykit, alloys, filters, exhaust, ecu. But when I wanted to put suspension and bonnet on they werent happy, eventually got them to let me put bonnet on though.
Id say your £1600 target should be achievable but might take some ringing around, hopefully you\'ll get lucky early on.
Also, if this happens to be a second car, it would be worth looking into a classic car policy, although these do require car to be garage and have limited mileage.
well as you can see from my thread, when i tried this i was the same age as you, extra years ncb and 2 more years driving and best i got was £1595.
This was for a real fd, had loads of insurers quoting for the 2400cc, which they claimed was an fd and it wasnt it was the fc.
not sure how that guy got 1100 from admiral as best i could get was 3500, elephant was 1874 :)
i couldnt get a classic car insurers at 21, you had to be over 25.
although i think it was aplan they said i could try them next insurance year, as id be 22 (nearly 23) and driving the fd for over a year.
if you get cheap insurance somewhere post it on my list :) ill be creating a new one in feb again while i ring them all again :)
If you can park the FD on your driveway or otherwise off the road it may definitely be worthwhile looking into a classic-car type policy. The only other downside with those is that you tend to get a limited mileage per year and you\'d need another car. Although for me the price difference in between the FD insurance as a daily driver and as a classic with something else as a daily driver is more than enough to insure the daily driver as well...
please let us know who will insure this as a classic for people under 25 :)
i cant find anywhere at 22, mines garaged and a second car.
Ah bummer, yes, I had forgotten that given that I\'m a slightly[1] older than 22...
[1] Slightly pretty much reached the age of consent a few days ago if you know what I mean.
lol elford_tim. Its not the age, its how old ya feel :D
thanks for all the help guys, is very much appreciated. Can see that my target (or around about there) maybe possible afterall so i can look to getting the car i have always wanted. Done the progression building up to it and really wanted my 4th car to be a rx. I will post up when i get quotes and that and look forward to seeing how ya get on anthony. Great that u put up that list, is a great help to newcomers to the world of rx7\'s :)
Any other guys please add to this list if ya have anything that might help :)

thanks will check it out. (Although most mass online ones always seem to come back with stupid quotes. grrr)
they do normally, this one really suprised me though! I got 5 quotes around the £600 mark at age 24 (although 25 in a few days).
If you want you can use my reg P65 PKE, that will make sure you get the right model will be a 96 2600cc import twin turbo manual, if you put in a 92-95 one would be in danger of selecting a uk model by mistake which would give you a cheaper quote than what it would actually be, and sometimes they mess the models and the cc up so this would ensure some accuracy.
wow thanks mate. Yea the plate would help a lot, as it is hard getting all the details correct. Appreciate all the help from ya mate :)
Want my rx even more now so i can be part of the forum more :D (not intended to sound lame)
It is a very helpful place :) apart from the occasional shambolic for sale thread :o
well just did a quick quote, the 6 quotes ranged from £1874 - £2061.
but that was listing the car as having no modifications. £1800 isnt too bad, but want to ensure the insurance peeps know about the modifications. Not playing the "not tell them" game lol.
just give it a blast mate see what the difference is, a lot of body stuff doesnt make much of a difference, if any, with some companies.
I had a car insured with CIS once and they said as long as it doesnt make you go any faster it wont cost you any more!
AWSOME :D i added bodykit, alloys, suspention alterations, and exhaust alterations and the quote came back at £1874.63 fully comp. :D
Wonder if i called somewhere like Adrian Flux and told them wether they would attempt to beat it. £1600 would be even better :D

I was 21 when I took out the policy and pay £1295 fully comp on a 94 import.
Thats with 2yrs no claims and garaged as a second car.
Where abouts in the west mids are you from?
Im from Hereford dude £1300 would be an awsome quote but i dont know if id get near that due to having a years less no claims and it would be my primary car.
Haha, just noticed ur from Kidderminser, you will know Hereford then :D
Scuttle, so when i used ur plate opn that auto trader insurance thing, it still asked me to enter the car make model, etc. I went through it answering the questions with ur details and then it did the quote. It didnt ask me if it was a jap import at any point. Does that mean it knows its an import or will it have calculated it as a UK car???
Just wanna make sure that quote is DEF correct :)
Car details it shows are: 1996P MAZDA RX-7 2.6 TURBO COUPE 3DR
Well, I would assume it would as there are no \'96 UK cars, and my plate should ring up as an import.
Saying that, insurance companies are not known for there accuracy! Might be worth giving them a ring with your ref number, just explain you\'ve used a mates plate to ensure accurate model info, and check the quotes ok
ahh, (didnt know there are no 96 UK cars) not 100% up to speed on the complex model history of the rx7 yet :D
Randomly got a call today from Ensign asking me about the quote and that so i though see what they would quote me via the phone. Got round to the car details explained about using ur plate and that, got that it was an import, said it was a 2.6 and the girl was like "2.6 auto yes" and i said, no its a manual. "Oh" she then said. We only have the 2.6 auto on our system, so cannot cover you with the 2.6 manual...
She then offered to put me though to some other company but i said not to worry as was still looking round.
Why couldnt the stupid DVLA leave it as a 1.3 save all this confution. 2.4 - manual, 2.5 only auto. arghh lol
I\'m running a Uk RX7 at the minute and it only cost me around £1000 to insure for the 12 months. That was with 0 ncb and aged 21 living in a ok postcode. On a 5000 limited mileage. The car is defiantly insured as a 2.6 manual as well, That was with Admiral
So may be worth you looking into getting a Uk car to start off with. If you remove the pre cat on a Uk car you\'ll be at import 255 Bhp and then you can bolt on all the mods you want as the cars only have small differences which don\'t really get in the way when modding.
Thats def the kinda quote i would like!!! :D
So is that a UK twin turbo gen 3. Could i ask what year it is? Only problem is finding them. Arnt the UK spec ones like pretty rare to find?
(if anyone could help with this would by helpfull :D )
well as i though, had a look round for a uk spec rx7, and they are very few & far between. Am thinking they will probably be higher priced as well (because of the insurance perks of a UK model)
keep looking i found one through total chance on msn spaces rung him up and bought it! for 4800 with 20k on a rebuilt engine :Thumbsup!
Well i have a while of looking round yet before i get the car so ill keep my eyes peeled :D You got a bargin there dude! and from such a random place, lol.
On an insurance note, has anyone purchased their quote via the Autotrader insurance search. Was everything ok that you entered - ie. did the insurance company accept that the mods had been added on the autotrader site and so do they still apply to the actual policy.
Hope so :D

you got a nice quote there, i too was 21, 2yrs ncb, 4 years driving on 1991 car. mine was £1700 though :)
see what they do for me this year i think :)
cj, give elephant/admiral a try using the reg again, they do an online quote and you should be able to select the correct model and you can add mods
ok bud, will give it a go and let ya know how i get on :D
Here you go CJ one Uk RX7 for sale http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/111016.htm But its coming up to rebuild time by the looks of things
I paid £9500 for mine which had a fresh rebuild that cost £8500 (got the receipt) and 68k on the clock. It\'s a late M reg car so puts the price up a little bit to. Plus is in great nick if I do say so myself. May put it up for sale but can\'t make my mind up. So if your interested.
