Title: Underseal
Post by: Gman on December 01, 2003, 08:54:26 PM
Is it best to get my new import undersealed professionally or can i do it myself, if so what should i use?

Be careful undersealing it.  It should really be done from new.  If you do it now, then you may well trap years of dirt/mositure etc into the car which will kill it and make it a bit of a nightmare.

Im not an expert or anything, but have heard mixed things about undersealing older cars.  Waxoil may be an option, but I dont know what this is either :D

Yes I live here :D

I dont know what to suggest, but there was another thread recently that had some info in about underseal and waxoil etc so maybe try a search to dig it out.

I would look for you, but im off trying to find a capture of 5th Gear for the drift feature...

i dont like underseal at all.  what happens is, when a tiny bit of rust start,s it can creep around under the under seal without detection untill one day your floor is no more and you wonder how that happend. if you were to sandblast it all properly and then cover it first in primer then spray sealer, very rubbery, then it will last longer than the car itself but as this is not easy or practical i would do what i did.

on a ramp clean everywhere to get rid of all loose dirt and oil. then waxoil it all. it is quite easy and cheap if you use the firms materials too. it is really a summer job though as there is too much moister under your car and you dont want to seal that in

I\'d agree with the waxoil comments. Having restored several classic cars that had been undersealed it\'s hasn\'t convinced me of it\'s merits. It also makes one hell of a mess when you try and weld to it !

Having said that I have seen bare metal convered with underseal and last for years without rusting. Preparation is every thing.

I took delivery of my FD in early november and will underseal it. Although I\'m using it for a daily driver I don\'t want to trap any salt in - Which it probably now has so will power wash it and waxoil in the spring.

Here we go, got my bullet proof anorak on for this answer !!

l have been around these cars for a little while now and have never know rust be a problem at all topside or underside with a Gen 3 import or otherwise, so undersealing especially this time of year with the damp etc l feel would cause more harm than good.

Unless any of you know any different.

Title: Waxol
Post by: Headmaster on December 02, 2003, 09:08:44 PM
Hi
Saw this thread as I was waiting for Hard drive to defrag on other PC!
I think you are better off using Waxol. Underseal is Black and gets everywhere. Waxol can be sprayed with a nozel and get into not easy to reach places. Thats my opinion anyway!

so hang on "Waxoyl Under sealing" are we still saying this is unecessary & potentially bad or is this actually better than sum nasty underseal & potentially worth doing especially in good conditions etc etc?

Hi\'
Well Waxoyl as was said is better done when New. As alot of cars when new anyway come from factory with some protection on them. As sprayed inbetween doors and such. But if nice and grease free would not go amiss anywhere. But saying that then Underseal would also be good for some situations! Waxoyl is easier to clean of than underseal.

Quotesoon to have call from motomall so working out the necessities

Ditto that. I was thinking of going with the waxoyl treatment, since it was pretty cheap, but reading this thread I\'m not so sure.

Anyone with any more thoughts on the subject, I\'d love to hear them. (I know it\'s only a little bit of money we\'re talking about, but I still want to get things right with this car. I\'d be kicking myself later if I didn\'t get it done and subsequently found rust.)

Would it be beneficial on a car that\'ll be used all year round rather than one that sits in storage over winter?

Cheers :)

Post by: Headmaster on December 02, 2003, 09:42:18 PM
Would not make any difference if you used in the winter as the idea of it is to keep the parts that are coated safe! Just make sure you clean well! Then spray everywhere, even where you can\'t see. YOU WILL NEVER STOP RUST!!!!:) It grows on your car and you can\'t see it. If its there you will see it some time. It just creeps up. Just do your best!

That\'s not fair, you\'ve got almost a weeks head start on me :)

Who knows though, with Chrimbo coming up anything might happen. Still, if you want a real race, you\'re gonna have to wait until rotorstock. :3gears-rh

I got mine waxoled, but to be honest the company who did it, while preparing a lot of cars for the SVA test left me with the impression that they were clueless about whether the car needed it or not.

They insisted to me that the FD3 is not undersealed in Japan, but when I asked \'was it not like the MX-5\' they then insisted that the MX-5 was also not under sleaed in Japan, which I know for to be very wrong.

OK race @ rotorstock (http://burns.thefinaldimension.org/cwm/3dlil/idea.gif) How about first one to get drunk & still manage to get it up (tent you pervs! (http://www.smilies.okipages.com/s/contrib/ed/smiletongue.gif)) lol

Haha, I\'d take you up on that, but I actually quit drinking so I could afford to buy and run the Rex :rollin

Back on topic, I think I\'m not going to bother with the waxoyl for now. I\'ll at least wait until the summer, then if I find myself doing anything else that requires that the car be up in the air for any reason, I\'ll consider doing it then.

now back on track i was just told that the waxoyl stuff the moistur can only go in one direction, like gortex i guess, so does this not mean trapping water in is less of an issue?

its nothing like gortex.   think of a candle. if you pour water on one  does it go through one side but not the other ???

wax oil is a wax in liquid form
