Having owned both types of cars I know which one i\'d rather have now!.... :Thumbsup!
Still very similar from that front end shot.
Definitely a similarity alright. The Veilside kitted 2\'s look
quite like the Rex aswell.
Although I\'ve not had the chance to drive my Rex yet,
I know which I prefer already. Had 2 MR2 turbos. Fun but...........
I like MR2s lots of bang for your buck, but I\'d prefer the more expensive mid-engined NSX if I had the cash to buy either. FD is still my fav of the Japanese sports cars, it has that special something!
i cant see the simularity the mr2 looks for like a ferrari f40/f50. where as the rex looks sexy as
A little off the subject but I love that wide arch kit on the FD. Anyone any ideas what make/model it is and how much I\'ll need to be saving to get one?
Its the burnout kit, Freddy had someone making copies for £1500 last summer as part of a group buy. Do a search and you\'ll find the thread.
Barry
Everyone loves that Burnout kit! Must be one of the most fav kits around :)
one thing that annoys me about the burnout demo as above is why they would put M3 mirrors on it
Yeh i agree, they spoil the look of the car, even if they would have kept the Std ones it would have looked better
Great Cars the Mr2s... iv just sold my TRD2000GT.... was no.21 of 35...no compariable to a well setup fd thou:D
Quote from: D1 WTFone thing that annoys me about the burnout demo as above is why they would put M3 mirrors on it
I think a pair of ganador mirrors would of finished it off nicely.
Burn-out kit looks awsome in the pics, but in the flesh i thought it looked pretty poor.

Copies never do look as good as the originals. Wavy panels are a telltale sign and easy damage due to lack of panel thickness is another problem to be found later....
Cheapo rip offs don\'t do anyone any favours... Most Japanese specialists are wary of supplying kits to the UK as they know someone will make a copy eventually and sell their hard work as being as good as the originals... When in fact they\'re certainly not.
I have one cheapo copy part on my car. The Scoot bonnet which came from Rotaryextreme.com. Compared to an original, quality is only around 50% as good. Hadn\'t known it wasn\'t original when I bought it.... Was a bit green 5 years ago..
Miguel.
Never really liked the MR2 + the rex is soooo much sexier :)
here\'s my new mr2 :D

shafter- it aint a rex but as mr2\'s go it looks pretty sweet. another one to put in the carpeted garage, lol
yes sir indeed.
need to sell something soon as i have no xmas money..... but i do have 6 nice motors :D
i can understand 2 or 3 but six, you loon! (dad mode on) you can only drive one at a time (dad mode off) but it is nice to have some spares, lol

I totally agree Miguel, but you have to bear in mind that the increasing majority of UK RX7 owners are ebay loving pikeys who love buy cheap RX7s and cant afford to maintain them.
Where as in Japan they have a GENUINE love of the rotary and FD and generally would not insult the car by using cheap replica parts. The UK market dictates cheaper bodykits etc, but then complains when the quality is not perfect!
Expecting supercar performance for vauxhal Nova money, is crazy. Look on the skyline forum etc, and there are countless people building serious cars, here we only have a handfull.
Couldn\'t agree more. The amount of FD\'s falling to pieces through neglect is incredible let alone owners not getting their wedge out to modify their cars. Considering how cheap it is to have a complete engine rebuild and get good fun power out of an FD, I am always amazed when people moan about the running cost.
Must be said there are a few owners out there that understand the relationship between car condition and money spent, but they are getting harder to find these days.

lol, one is my company car so i guess that dont count. the others, well i need to get rid of at least 3 of them. so far i have a supra aerotop, mitsi gto, mr2 turbo, mr2 na and the rx. all of them modified and pleasant on the eye :D

she\'s a replica mate, but a great fitment.
Hay guys I see where your coming from with some owners not wanting to spend a penny on them but someone needs to stick up for us poor guys.
I\'m no millionaire like some of you seem to be but I do like to look after my motor. I always try to fix her first to save money but If I can\'t It\'d never go to some cowboy back street It would be a hard save and send It to some specialist.
With ref to tuning them I think these big horse power cars are amazing but I know I couldn\'t afford to spend that sort of money on a car and would never try to do It on the cheap. I do want some low mods, exhaust (thats on order) etc. If I do see some nice parts you guys are fed up with that are good quality in good condition I\'m not going to turn them down at a good price. This doesn\'t mean I\'m going to buy charlies cheapos of of Flebay.
The point is give us some slack, we\'re trying.:Hammer
Go on then, whoes gonna :flamed me first.
Fair comments all but sometimes if you dont have the money what can you do ??? you cant expect everyone to have awesome RX\'s or Skylines as the money just isn\'t there.
I think its wrong to look down on the cheaper RX owners as its all they can afford and try their best. :(
But then again very valid point by Ross if you buy the cheapo kits and then complain what did you expect  :flamed
Quote from: DRAGONBurn-out kit looks awsome in the pics, but in the flesh i thought it looked pretty poor.
Couldn\'t agree more with this mate. Have seen a couple of them now at shows and for the prise of the kit (over 3k for a genuine one) i dont think its all that good. :(
Have do disagree with you totally on the \'ebay loving pikeys\' comment though! Just because some of us dont have loads of money for huge turbos and wild orignial body kits doesn\'t mean that we cant enjoy are cars and look after them as best we can.
Its is true that you only get what you pay for in this life though. I\'m sure we\'d be all so much happier and all have hugely modded rx\'s if the products were as cheap here as they seem to be in Japan.
Just my 2 pence worth :D
Adam
I\'m not saying everyone should try and go for big turbos etc. I\'m saying that it is better to do things properly, rather than cheaply, after all that is what is giving the RX7 a bad name. From cheap rebuilds to to dodgy ebay turbo kits.
Some FDs are 15 years old, with very complecated twin turbo systems, maintenance is essential, but often overlooked. which is a shame because when they are looked after can be very reliable.
Yeh fair, comment mate :Thumbs-up :D

I think it was a fair comment, I hate those eBay cars, you can tell that from rims, to poor fitting kits and lights it was all brought on eBay. Ultralite rims are my hate :flamed
There\'s a misconception right there... Products aren\'t cheap in Japan. Genuine quality costs money to make and supply. Simple as that.
To give an example, we typically charge just 15% over retail cost in Japan + carriage to supply original JDM bodykits delivered to your door in UK, including RE-Amemiya, Pan Speed, etc. We sell a few kits, to people who know the difference between poor copies and genuine quality.
Along comes someone, makes a cheapo copy (Which isn\'t usually even close to the quality of original) and sells it at a cheaper price, or knocks it out as an original...:(
Problem is, fake copies are made from (at best!) bucks moulded from original FRP panels or at worst - from panels that have already been copied many times. You\'ll find fit, warping, panels of incorrect size, wavyness, etc. on fake panels, as well as inconsistent thickness, which may lead to cracking, etc. later.
At the point originals are no longer available because the market\'s damaged by copies, the original designer / manufacturer in Japan has lost out very significantly on further sales abroad and gets nothing but a kick in the teeth in thanks for making such a great design.
This is a major problem for the likes of C West, Veilside, Bomex, etc. and the very reason these companies aren\'t doing so well any more and are reluctant to directly supply anybody abroad. In the meantime, companies getting cheap quality copies made, are encouraged by sales to do it more... and you end up with ill fitting bodykits of questionable quality.
Then you start getting turbo copies with cheap truck turbos substituting the quality high performance items, cheap intercooler kits, etc, etc.
Even Nemesis (I\'m refering to previous owners, not the current ones) were making copies of Veilside kits - but then selling them as originals. How do I know this? Because I know Veilside\'s people personally and they told me there were no further sales to Nemesis after their initial order as UK distributors for Veilside.
Fit rubbish quality and you\'ll have a rubbish car in the end. It\'s okay - if that\'s what you want, but don\'t be under the illusion you\'re getting the same quality as genuine items and building a dream car by buying cheapo bodykits...
I\'m not rich, either - but I do love my cars so I spent a disproportionate amount on them. My RX-7\'s cost me over £30,000 to build in Japan (Over 5 years) even though I\'m in the car & parts trade.... The only fake part on there\'s the frankly rubbish quality Scoot Carbon bonnet. Koseki San of Scoot had a right giggle when he saw it on my car and checked the quality!!.... Had I known myself copy Scoot bonnets were so bad compared to originals, I\'d have paid the difference and bought a real one! But I had thought I was buying quality - I was duped by the supplier in the USA.
Learnt my lesson though - Our race RX-7 being built in the UK has a real one. It doesn\'t need bonnet pins to stop it curling upwards at speed, or protect against the bonnet hook snapping off at speed with potentially disasterous consequences.
I\'d never fit a copy turbo kit, as these units aren\'t specifically designed & developed for high performance use. I wouldn\'t use cheap Chinese wheels on my RX-7, because being gravity cast as opposed to forged through stamping at 3000 tonnes, they\'re heavy, brittle and not made with the ideal sizes and offsets. I wouldn\'t fit a cheap intercooler kit because I know poor quality items can leak, potentially damaging the turbo as a result of over working and I wouldn\'t fit cheap Autometer gauges, because they\'re not that accurate. I could go on..... but I think you might get my drift!
I\'m proud of the cars & parts we supply, because everything\'s genuine in what we sell and because we\'re supporting the specialist companies that made RX-7\'s greater for us to enjoy in the first place.
Rant over.
Miguel.

I saw that you were bidding on this on ebay. How much did you end up getting it for?
I think you\'re spot on there Miguel. I know where I want my RX-7 to go and I want to get there with the best quality original parts. I think sometimes this leads to a judgement that your label and brand name obsessed and not concerned with performance. I tend to look at it slightly different in that I want proven parts from some of the best manufacturers in the world. Not something cheap that won\'t perform or will fall to pieces quickly. When I bought my exhaust I got a FEED down-pipe, Knight Sports cat and a Fujitsubo exhaust which ended up costing quite a bit, certainly a lot more than I could have gotten a full exhaust for. But when it came to fitting it everything aligned perfectly and I mean perfectly with a back box that fits snug to the rear bumper. I could even get the brace back on over the 80mm piping for the cat without any bother and lots of clearance. I understand that people aren\'t all rich and I\'m definitely not myself but I think I\'d rather wait longer and get less parts of the right quality than buy cheap knock-offs so I can modify as quickly as possible. Funnily enough the only part that I\'ve bought for my car that was made in the UK was a replacement aluminium AST that\'s only been on the car about a year. Whenever I drive now coolant leaks out of the top and I have to keep topping it up, needless to say it\'s going soon and I\'ll be putting a Knight Sports one on there.
these are fair points, but like some people have said, not everyone can afford to do a lot of it with original parts (obviously as they are very expensive). which is fine that doesnt matter to me, but like has been said they then cant complain that fitment is bad etc. (when bumpers come up for sale the first think that is said, is what is fitment like, i have asked this question even reasontly) i guess i am talking about body kits really
One of the main problems for me is where do i get these original parts. i cant easily find anywhere that sells what i am after. where stocks genuine C-west(bumpers/side sirts), veilside(rear spats etc), Re-A (headlights),
We don\'t stock C West, RE-Amemiya, Pan Speed, etc/ but supply such goods at 15% over retail cost in Japan + Carriage to your door in UK. Surface delivery is fairly reasonable from Japan to UK.
Example: Two FRP bumpers and skirts are around £230.00 for delivery cost from Japan to UK.
Please don\'t ask us to supply quotes if you\'re only wondering on price though!
We prefer people only contact us when they\'re ready to make a purchase, not window shopping :)
Thanks

Sorry this is off topic, but were you in Sheffield last night Shafster, in that MR2? (on 31/10/06) Saw an MR2 just like the one you\'ve just picked up, passing by the trainstation. If it was, it looks hella wide at the back, was impressed.

Leave us "Pikey Ebay users" alone Ross, not everyone can afford "dragon" prices :rollin
Miguel I know you "only add 15%" but when you add shipping and customs tax and VAT things from japan are a fair bit more pricey over here than they are over there !!
You can\'t blame folk for wanting stuff at sensible prices...
While I\'m not as rich as I\'d like to be :) I\'m afraid I\'d have to side with Miguel here. Quality costs and you pay for it sooner or later - if you get a cheap knock-off kit I guess you\'d end up spending a considerable part of the price difference on filler and bodyshop time just to make it fit. Plus stuff that gets sold to you as, say, \'genuine Veilside\' but isn\'t doesn\'t do the original manufacturers any good, either.
Personally, I prefer high-quality, fit-once-and-fuggedaboutit type parts as opposed to the ones that make me wonder if I need to buy a bigger hammer to fit them. And if that means that I\'ll have to save a bit longer I\'d rather do that...

A car doesnt need to cost over 30k to be done properly, there are many people over here selling bits and pieces that are shoddy, and over charge!
As for your car not needing bonnet pins to stop curling....thats great but it will do before it can go out on a race track!
The parts dont need to be genuine parts....there are others that can replicate after market parts.....Just check before you pay any cash.

Do a simple Google search, find the retail prices in Japan, add 15% and estimate carriage costs based on the example I gave, to get a rough idea of total to your door. No other costs to add. Should be fairly simple to do.
:)

:wiggle There\'s "done properly", then there\'s really done properly... I\'ll post up a thread sometime with full pics of my rex, but it\'s got a lot done to it... It\'s not a focussed track car only, it\'s a car that\'s beautiful to look at, but is also very capable, not just in go, but handling and braking too.
If you do a search, you\'ll probably find some pics on this forum somewhere..
It\'s not all about function for me, form and quality has to play a part too in making the best car I can. Personally, I don\'t like seeing my bonnet wobble at high speeds, which it does. It\'s fine for the racetrack, but that\'s not my point.
I used this as an example of copy against original, properly developed stuff.
Scoot developed their bonnet to flow air through the engine bay on their top speed RX-7, which did something very close to 200 mph in NZ. Their bonnets aren\'t flimsy like the cheapo copies and are made to very high standards.
Quality costs money.
Miguel.

Looking again, perhaps I kinda got the wrong end of the stick.:flamed :flamed :xconfused
Of course, you don\'t have to spend £30,000 to build a great RX-7! I\'ve gone to a silly extreme!
Fact is a good RX-7\'s a great car to begin with, so choosing the right parts to improve it for your preferred use is the key to making it better. You don\'t need half the stuff I\'ve changed on mine...
It\'s just important to be aware that choosing the wrong, poor quality parts with price as the main deciding factor, is not the path to success to making a good car. At best you\'ll end up with a compromised car, in many ways - at worst, you\'ll cause yourself more grief and cost to put it right when something fails, than doing it right in the first place.
Okay, think I\'ve said enough now. I\'ll get my coat :WaveBye :flamed
Miguel
i bought an original burnout kit about a year back and the quality and fitment was amazing i thought, the guy at the bodyshop said it was the best fitting kit he had ever done. But i kinda hoped for the £2k+ it cost me it would as it was original. Even came with pretty stickers on all the panels with serial numbers!
regarding rx7 pikeys, i must admit, im with ross on this one. Im seeing more and more "kids" with them and it really ****es me off when they ask you something that every rx7 owner should know before they even step into one! eg. These engines are 3 litre twin turbo\'s arent they?,and how often do you change the oil? (when theres probably none in it!)
no wonder there are so many crappy cheap ones out there. I know that when i come to sell mine, ill sell it hopefully for what its worth. I religously look after my car at the end of the day and spend hours researching how to maintain and look after it best even if i dont have a huge budget.
Just kind of comes naturally with these things, they need to be loved i think!
Cheers
Nick
Ooh good thread this.
I agree with both parties here, I myself have bought \'branded\' parts for my Rex mainly because I\'m a snob and when you turn up to meets etc people respect parts if they say Volk, Blitz, HKS etc etc. Anyone remember those Valk wheels, they had Roys on them also lol
However a lot of the stuff I have bought for my car has been branded secondhand bits and have had some real bargains that have done the job just as well as buying new. Yes I am sure they wont last as long as new stuff but if it lasts 20 years rather than 40 then its good enough for me. Its a shame there isnt more of a market for secondhand parts from Japan. I have approached a few people for secondhand bits but been told that they dont sell them.
Wonder if this is because there isnt a guarantee on the bits or they dont want to have to go and source good quality secondhand stuff ?
A guy I know who runs a bodyshop says that you can practically halve the fitting and spraying cost if you buy an original kit as there is virtually no work needed to get it to look and sit on the car properly. For the extra 500 etc it surely is worth it when spending 2k on bodyshop stuff.
I wouldnt say all copies are bad, just look at some of the bits Gary (Rotaryart) has made, these are as good or dare I say better than original.
Miguels company is very very competitive for price,I ordered something over here and had to wait 4 weeks only to be told it would be another 2 possibly more so mailed Miguel and he got it shipped and posted and it arrived 3 days later at a cheaper price than I was paying !!!!
Ideally we would all love to buy the car for 1k and then have 10k, 20k etc etc to spend on bits but my opinion is buy new from respected parties or wait till the said bit turns up secondhand and buy it !!!!!!!
FMIC for £100 please......lol

i am a youngish owner i guess, but am not one of these pikeys as you put it. just ask pip what my engine, single tubby bill came to in the last month (scary money - and i am a student (very poor one now i might add). however only the best for my rex.
agree with this coment though, i am looking out at my car on the drive and it has frost on it :( . i just wish i could park it in my lounge. a rex is not like any normal car, they do need to be cared for and loved. which obviously a large majority of them are as there is are lots of nice friendly/passionate owners on here. :Thumbs-up

I think we often need to be more supportive of the innovative tuners in this market. All of these cheap copy parts seriously de-value the original parts and can put at risk the original tuners who made them. Now if these tuners went bust I\'m sure everyone on here would say it was a crying shame, even a lot of the same people who are running around with nothing but copies of their parts.
It\'s the same with the RX-7 market at the moment, people can\'t sell good cars for the money they are worth because of the amount of cheap, poor quality cars about going for nothing (which a lot of people complain about because it directly affects them). All of these are damaging the retail price of the good examples and it\'s the same with copy parts. These copies are damaging the original tuners who make this stuff but people don\'t seem to mind because it\'s not them it affects.
An original Scoot bonnet costs a lot, something around 1.5-2K which is a hell of a lot but they are amazing. Problem is the market is flooded with copies of this bonnet for a lot cheaper money which I\'m sure has meant that Koseki-San has sold a hell of a lot less of these than he would have otherwise done. This also leads to the problem that anyone who would have bought an original would now think twice (myself included) because every other car has a Scoot copy on it. Having a Scoot bonnet is no longer a special thing which is a real shame as it\'s an amazing design. I understand why copies are made for a cheaper price so people can make a quick buck and supply demand but if these people have the facilities to make bonnets why not make something original instead of taking from the tuners who have helped build this market that earns them a living?
