Title: Knightsport V-mount
Post by: B9 KLF on October 29, 2006, 05:14:53 PM
Hi Guys

Who has one of these fitted since I need some info please.

Are there any identifying marks on the radiator (alternative manufacturer etc) and are both hoses top fed. Where does your feed from the AST go to?

Many thanks

Keith

From recollection they use either modified ron davies or koyo rads, probably koyo as they are a lot cheaper than RD\'s in japan! I\'m pretty sure the Rotary Extreme v-mount kits use a chopped up koyo - and seeing as the KS kit existed first and the \'similarities\' between KS and RE v-mount kits - its not impossible that RE decided not to re-invent the wheel so to speak with their radiator solution ;-)

I *think* the koyos have the name stamped in the top tank so u might be able to see it on yours keith if it is a koyo they used.

HTH,
R.

The kit on customers car has had a koyo rad as a V-Mount set.
the kit is original Knight Sports. So Rich is right, them use Koyo as well.

:Giggle Ive probably seen a couple of thousand FD\'s over the last few years and I\'ve seen may be 5-10 KS v-mounts - and I couldnt swear all of them were actually KS as so many small jap tuning companies replicate other peoples stuff - just look at hyper rev...

I had a vague recollection they had changed at some point, as i\'m sure we\'ve supplied kits with different types of rad in them tbh. Whether they fit what they have or want, or if they did only use koyo and now only use RD I dont know. Could probably find out tho...

I thinkt that KS have changed their radiators 3 times since they started with v-mount kits. Ask Miguel at newera. He has a kit. and he is in touch with KS alot so I think he can answer any questions.

Continuing the investigation into my overheating-then-rebuild (times 2) problems, I have been looking at the v-mount that was installed as a full Knightsport kit.

In practice it had very poor performance and combined with a full undertray it was not possible to sit in traffic without overheating. The rad is Koyo but seems to be a multi purpose one with blanking plates welded at several points.

The first pic shows the set up with the nose cone removed. Notice the long route for the return hose, which was tie wrapped to the chassis and was chaffing through.

The second pic shows the car on the ramp with the rad removed and the long return pipe to the engine.

The third pic is of the underside of the Koyo rad showing the bottom outlet but also the potential for another outlet blanked off.

The fourth pic shows the detail from the web pages of Knightsport and from the Rotary Specialist who installed it - what I thought I had contracted to buy and have fitted.

Any comments please especially about the effects of a long return pipe.

I think that knightsports has changed the radiator in their vmount setup a few times over the years due to problems, could be that the last picture is of an earlier or later rad.. The pipe looks rather long but im not sure about the effect.
Ought tot be less effective... but I dont know.

The blanked off outlet is where the original pipe comes out of a standard rad! You will probably find that they have put it at the front because of ground clearance with the angle of the original exit! As for overheating, i have no idea, agreed the hose does take a long route but wouldnt have thought that would cuase too many problems!

That Rad looks bodged up and does not look to be the correct application for the FD...
It doesn\'t also look new to me.. (well from the photo)

But if you were shown the set up that was in the Photo(above), then thats what you should have gotten!
Well unless you were told otherwise?

I would definately say thats an FD rad, maybe a modified standard fit though by the looks of the pipework! Looking at the one in the pic the lower hose outlet has an angle piece on it so the hose would not have to take the direction yours does!

That v-mount setup just does not look right at all to me. Doesn\'t even sound like it was well installed, what with the pipes having to be cable tied to parts of the chassis! :eek

Well that\'s what I think as well. On top of that, with the constant overheating the water seals went and it was back in the workshop 1200mls later for an engine rebuild - rebuild no. 1 that is!

Could you not just get a Radtec V-mount rad and mod the Pipes to suit?

Or take it back to the Place where you got it from with a Pic of a KS V-mount and ask why its not the same?

It may help if you take the Air con rad out? But then again i guess you don\'t want to loose it?

QuoteIt may help if you take the Air con rad out? But then again i guess you don\'t want to loose it?

I specified that I wanted a.c. to remain. After a specific query from me (that evidently went back to Knightsport) I was told a.c. could be installed with the set up.

Now that that set up has been stripped out to inspect it, the ac condenser that was put in was found to badly blocked and this could contribute to the poor air flow. The a.c. didnt work again anyway but thats another story.

Pic of condener rad to follow.

when we took the battery cover off we found the reason that we believe the a.c.wasnt working - see pipe not connected.

Hi Keith, I can assure you this is NOT a genuine knightsports kit by any stretch of the imagination, I have a knightsports kit fitted to my fd, with verification of sale from knightsports japan, the radiator is extremely efficient, with water temps never going near 90 degrees C irrespective of how hard the car is driven, track days, etc.
The radiator they use is manufactured by ron Davis, with no outlet going under the car as in your picture.
The AST mounts on the bracket holding the intercooler to the mazda original intercooler mount/cross brace
I can try and get a photo at lunch

Thanks Chris

Would also appreciate seeing the undertray configuration that you have.

I understand from the installer yesterday (Sunday), that they got the set up from PAC Inc Japan. Did you obtain yours direct from Knightsport then?

The knightsports kit I have seen on Miguels Car does not look at al like your kit, and if you look at their pictures on how the piping is routed, you see that you clearly has recieved the wrong kit.
That might be an early knightsports kit. But certainly not the latest.

I think the one on Miguels car is an early version.  They used those great looking Ron Davis radiators for a while with both inlet and outlet at the top of the radiator.  I think they now use the radiator shown on B9 KLF\'s car with the horrible looking loop back at the bottom.

I think that I should have been given the radiator which was shown on RE Works web page at the time (see my earlier post with top fed radiator).

If Knightsport did want to substitute it then at the very least it should have worked properly. The set-up installed with a full undertray failed to perform on track or in town and despite numerous e-mails, RE Worx failed to do anything about it.

If the wrong rad was sent to RE Worx then that is for them to take up with their supplier. Looking at the Koyo rad that was installed, it has so many different blanked off sections that I am amazed that Knightsport would have issued anything like that.

Well my investigation will be completed as soon as I sort out a decent Japanese translator. Anyone know a good one?

Keith: Translator as in Reading a paper, or translator as in a webpage that translates text..  babelfish.av.com or http://www.excite.co.jp/world/english/ works..  excite being the one that works best.

It seems pretty stupid for Knightsports to have one Rad/IC setup shown on their webpage, and sell another one to their customers.
And concidering their very very good rep in Japan, and all over the world.. I think it would be really stupid of them to send things that does not work.

Hope you get it sorted mate.

Check out the link below:

http://www.neweraimports.com/soldcarDetails.jsp?carId=139 (http://www.neweraimports.com/soldcarDetails.jsp?carId=139)

It\'s a car Newera sold modified by Knight Sports with their V-Mount and it\'s showing the same radiator setup as yours.  Given this I\'m guessing it\'s how the KS V-Mount looks nowadays.  Hope this helps.

It might be worth getting in touch with Miguel.  He gets his car worked on at Knight Sports so should know better than most how their V-Mount looks nowadays and how it works.

True true.. Hadn\'t seen that one, then I guess it\'s good I decided to get another brand of vmount this morning when talking to Mig.. Not because of the rad but that just added on to my decision. But as Jake said. Call Miguel, he would know.

I know he is running with an AC and the "cell" is located infront of the rad, with custom made pipeing.
