Title: Will i need a uprated ecu?
Post by: interloper393 on October 28, 2006, 05:48:53 AM
Just after some advice here guys, at the mo ma rex is almost standard, doing a rebuild myself and at the same time fitting an aftermarket air filter cone, a full stainless straight threw exhaust, fmic, alloy ast and radiator water spray system for the intercooler removing the aircon and id like to remove the air pump and acv, from what iv read if you dont have a decat then you dont need these? gunna blank them off with the plates.. is this borderline mods before i need a uprated ecu? if i do then she`s getting a street port 2, but funds are low at the mo, but the cost to redo it all later a be huge.. catch 22

cheers

Craig

Generally the accepted tuning limit of the standard ecu is air-filters and a back-box.

anything more and it starts to run lean.

i would say yes to changing the ECU not nessessaryly due to the mods that your adding but for the all round performance gain you will get from a mappable ecu.... DO IT, DO IT, DO IT

also you dont need the ecu untill the rebuild is finished, its winter mate take your time and spread the cost.

Hello matey,
Quotefrom what iv read if you dont have a decat then you dont need these?

Im guessing this is a typo, but just thought id make sure, if you DO have a de-cat you dont need these (air pump). :)

Hello its me again.  Yup i\'ve done a few.

If you want some advice your first extended Port should be Done on a Scrap housing so you can take pics and ask advice etc, Then if you don\'t go through into the water jacket copy it as close as possable to your Propper plates.

As for templates i use Judge ITO\'s Extended Port templates (Do a search on Nopistons.com and you will find him) i also use a Racingbeat Exhaust Port Template. They work very well but a word of advice watch the Inside of the Closing edge of the Port (stand the Plate up as in situe the closing edge is at the top, the Corner where it meats the Corner seal track is the thinnest Point)

Sounds daft but i like to do things like this in stages, First thing that goes on is a PFC (most cars already have Air filters and Exhausts) then make sure it runns ok, then Fuel system (You can just fit a Fuel pump and up the Fuel pressure at the Rail) then if all that is running Fine i\'ll think about a rebuild if it needs one and then if there is a Fault or error i know roughly where to look rather then chasing some thing i think is a Fault that realy is something not set up correctly.

As in anything there are levels of Extended Ports, from stock Primarys and Mild Secondrys to Masive Primarys and Masive Secondrys. You can make an Extended Port sound like a Bridge if you want to by Causing lots of Overlap. All depends on What you want. The Judge ITO route is good becouse its as Extreme as you can go and keep a nice idle.

Look at it this way the More Brap noise you get the more poor MPG and Bucking you get at low Rpm. Add a big clutch and you have got a car thats a Pain in the rear in Trafic. It Does\'nt realy matter if its an Extended Port or Bridge its the Overlap that causes the Dodgy low RPM.

I could do them for you but i live rather along way from you so getting them To and From whould be Expencive.

think maybe a street port with a bit of overlap then, does a full bridge port loose alot of low down power? is it major? wish i cud hav a go in one to see lol.. where abouts do u live griz?

Its not so much it looses power but more it Bucks and acts like its running realy rich at Low RPM (If you know what i mean) it makes Cruising quite hard to do (like 3k and under), you have to realy keep the revs up for example drop it a Gear but this inturn puts the motor into a Higher rev range so the MPG goes Bad.

I would\'nt recomend a bridge a an Every day road set up. you can make it tamer by doing a Half Bridge but Overlap tends to make the car hard work in Trafic. Plus you can get good Power from a well done Extended Port so unless you want Big Power there is no Point.

I\'m From nr Manchester.

I would add a Decent Fuel Pump and Fuel Regulator to that list.

Then you can Up the rail Pressure and gewt a bit more out of the Stock Injectors.
