Title: oil check
Post by: Yvonne on December 01, 2003, 07:46:06 AM
so I filled up for the 3rd time and thought I should be a good girl and check the oil.

not being adept at even opening the bonnet, I decided to follow the instruction in the manual.

so flat surface, wait 5 minutes for oil to settle in sump, clean off dip stick, put it in and take it out. The dip stick was coated with oil all the way up to the top.  So what am i doing wrong?

Anyone notice he car burning oil as predicted?

take care
Yvonne

According to the Mazda salesman who accompanied me on my test drive the engine is designed to use oil.  Because there\'s no splash lubrication of the rotor tips there is a small amount of oil fed to the tips for sealing/lubrication.  Hence the oil use and hence the large oil charge (over 6 litres IIRC).

I\'m new to rotaries so until otherwise informed I have to believe him.

Yvonne,

I checked my oil level for first time at 700 miles and it was about 1/3 down on dip stick.  I added about 300ml to bring it upto full.

I checked again at the weekend (now on 1250 miles) and it was still showing full.

Looking at threads on RX8Forum/Club site there do seem to be a lot of people who have not had to add any oil for well over 1000 miles and others who like me have had to add a small amount.

I would just recommend checking it every 500-700 miles (every 2 or 3 tanks).  No doubt you will soon get used to how your particular car uses oil based on your driving style.  The usage does depend on how much full throttle motoring you do.

No doubt some of the more technically minded members can give you more detail on this.

Regards

Dave

Assuming that the dip stick is similar to the other rotaries, all I can think is that either the engine wasn\'t very warm, or you\'d just added some oil (the dipstick sits in the filler pipe). Seems unlikely that it\'s so empty that it\'s off the bottom of the dipstick!

Try it again... Sometimes the first time you take out the dipstick, it dripps oil in the pipe, and this dropps back onto the dipstick after you\';ve cleaned it!

thank you sean
I did do it again and found that basically I just couldn\'t see well where I did it the first time.
the dip stick seems to be the same colour as the oil even when I wiped it down.

So I can only see the oil on the dip stick by holding it at an angle to catch the light.  anyway it was right up on the maximum so I will try it again in another 500 miles and see what\'s happened.

thanks anyway
am definately going to the pub meet
