Title: Whats everyone idleing at cold ?
Post by: RobEVo5 on October 25, 2006, 02:18:36 PM
My car likes to idle at nearly 2K when stone cold then drops as the water temp increased to about 700rpm.

Is this normal ?

I have a loud exhaust, and to be honest, annoys the hell out of me every morning until the car is up to temp, and don\'t think its impressing the neighbours much either. Is there any way of lowering the idle at cold ?

Do RX7 Gen3 have adjustable ISCV\'s  (idle speed control Valve) ?. If so where, as thinking I might be able to adjust this cold idle using this and then change the idle speed for warm on the Apexi Handcontroller.

Are you still on the standard engine, with twin turbo\'s? If so, sounds pretty normal. mine idles at about 1800 when cold, and should eventually drop down to about 1100rpm (It\'s ported) but still having a bit if difficulty getting the idle to drop and stabilize

Yep standard engine, and non-sequential turbo\'s. My idle drops to 700rpm and sits comfortably.

I think the exhaust is making me think its worse than it is.

My car wouldn\'t idle nice at low revs with a lean air fuel. Don\'t know if you have a Apexi, but if you do and you have a wideband. You might want to see what your AFR is at idle. - Just a suggestion.

No, don\'t have a wideband - but my tuner does. Will be getting it on soon.

Mine starts at 1500 when cold and drops to 750 when warm - pretty standard setup.

My FD starts up and then later on, on a road not far away, I sit in 3rd at 5000rpm and I know the T51 is fully spooled. BANG supersonic. I just love my rex.:WaveBye

It\'s just a warm up procedure dude, most turbo cars do it.  Start her up let her idle at 2000K (like mines does) and after a minute or so she\'ll drop down to 1200K or so then down to about 750 when she\'s fully warmed up.

It\'s only when you\'ve been driving her for 15-20 minutes and she\'s at operating temperature that she\'s the smoothest and fastest :)

Think maybe if you blip the throttle it will drop to 700 after,Not to much mind as it will be cold

Mazda made the car do this for a reason, its to get the oil temp up as quickly as possible......Go buy q Fiesta if you dont like the exhaust

It\'s true though. Don\'t put a loud exhaust on a rotary twin turbo sports car if you are worried about the neighbours ;)

You could just pootle a small way down the road away from your house if you think you\'re disturbing them.

Thats all very well unless you brought the car with it on as I did, and its not just about the neighbours. IMHO and each unto there own. A really loud exhaust detracts from the fun of the car for me. I don\'t want to put my right foot down as much as I would like to, through fear of letting the old bill know I am coming from a mile away, and feel like a bit of a tit with an exhaust that is totally over the top.

I brought the car for its looks, performance, handling and breaks not because it sounds like a nova with a straight through exhaust. Like I say each unto there own, but I am getting old these days and perhaps I am just showing my age.:(

Back on topic - I was convinced 2K at cold was a little high, and managed to lower it by adjusting the screw thats under the throttle body near where the TPS is. It only needed a 1/4 turn to take it down to 1400rpm.

Read my post above, I can\'t believe Mazda would have had it come off the production line like this. Things change, wear and move over the years which I think is the case here.

IMHO idling at 1000rpm from stone cold would be a alot better than 2K, reving an engine whilst stone cold is NOT good, and anyone that thinks idling at 2K is better than 1K should really shouldn\'t bother posting. As for noise I am guessing you are probably one of those people that I have placed in the catagory mentioned above.:flamed

The US models have an accelerated warm up system (AWS) on them when you start them cold the they idle at 3K straight away

Not 100% but I think you can alter the cold idle speed in the apexi , have a chat with one of the tuners they\'ll be able to tell you

I\'m thinking I may have to put a silenced mid pipe on mine , it was loud when I got it , then I put a un silenced mid pipe on and obviously that made it louder , now the engines been ported it\'s even bloody louder , after the engines been run in and I can drive at full revs I\'m thinking it\'s just gonna be too loud

Accelerated warm up was put on by mazda to increase engine life. They new everyone wasnt going to wait for it to warm up. so they tried to speed the process up. no harm is done at 2000 when cold, Harm is done at 5000 when cold.

They also put double throttle on to stop it engine being reved high when cold
