Title: Quiet performance exhaust - Do they exist ?
Post by: RobEVo5 on October 24, 2006, 10:57:59 AM
Hi,

I have a RX7, which has the Mongose cat back system, and to be honest I am finding it a little bit too loud for me.

Is there a quieter freeflowing exhaust on the market ?

Does anyone have a quieter performance exhaust who would like to swap for my mongoose ?

Does a quiet\'ish twin outlet exhaust exist. i.e like a S2000 pipe each side ?

Thx
Robin

Hi Robin

My Apexi was loud as hell but I always heard that the racing beat cat-back was a nice quite exhaust with good flow.  Maybe someone who has had one could give there opinion.

Regards
Jon

Been reading and like you say seems like a Racing beat gets the thumbs up. also someone somewhere said about a feed silenced midpipe.

The Mongoose looks like it should be quieter than it is with a small box in the centre section and back box being of reasonable size. compared to a blitz its probably quieter but still very loud for me.

Anyone wana swap a racing beat for my mongoose, with possibly some cash adjustment ?

Feed midpipe is a nice decat that gives the opportunity for more power whilst restricting any increase in noise, also quite expensive.  I had the feed midpipe on mine but the apexi catback still made too much noise at normal revs for me and was boomy.

Hopefully some people with experiences of other systems will chip in.

Thought I\'d add that shyauto\'s do a tiger catback that may be what your after, as I\'ve heard its reasonably quite.

Good luck.
Jon

Hello mate! There is a guy who\'s just bought a RX and posted some pics in the 3rd gen section. He says it\'s got a really quiet stainless exhaust on it and he\'s interested in swaping it for a louder one. Think his name is little_ant?
Give him a shout!
If your not a fan of noisy exhausts then think yourself lucky you havn\'t got a blitz nur-spec!
Every time i come home i keep expecting to find a eviction notice or an ASBO for  noise pollution!:rollin

This is a common topic and for good reasons, whether its the neighbours or track officials!!
Those of us who have the Feed midpipe/RacingBeat catback-i\'m one of them-it is relatively quiet compared to most...Apexi/blitz/HKS etc.
Sometimes i wish i had more flames..commoner with big rearcans..but ,hey ho,cant have it all.:Tongue1

I\'ve got a FEED downpipe, Knight Sports high flow cat and a Fujitsubo Power Getter RS exhaust and it\'s not loud at all.  I read around for ages before buying this exhaust as I heard they are meant to be some of the quieter ones.  It sounds great but just isn\'t that loud, I\'m sure the cat helps as well.

Had a NUR Spec with a silenced center and it was over the top. Went to Custom Chrome in Nuneaton who replaced the backbox for one of their own but kept the unrestricted 3"bore on my strict instructions. 6 db quieter at idle and 5 db quieter at 5000rpm. It still barks a fair bit under WOT but on constant or slight throttle its a lot quiter so you can make discrete entrance and exits and its not boomy on a long run.

Mine isnt boomy on a long run, but idling its LOUD!! I park it in my driveway up the back of my house and go inside to the living room at the front and can still hear it if i leave the turbo timer on.

I recently got a Blitz NUR spec and it is definately a loud exhaust both at idle and driving, even with my Dragon silenced midpipe. My old Apexi megaphone exhaust sounds like a standard exhaust compared to the Blitz. I might be putting the Apexi up for sale if anyone is interested....

I\'m afraid I can\'t give you any good news. Mine has a Blitz nur-spec with a decat and even with the bung in it is too loud. I now park on the road a couple of doors down from my flat so I don\'t wake the neighbours at 7am every morning. Without the bung it is loud ON TICKOVER!!!

But, if you can avoid your neighbours, the flames are fantastic (even with the bung BTW) :flamed

I\'m changing to an SMB twin tip to reduce the noise

Thanks for all the imput, and would appear that most of us are seeking a more sensible volume exhaust.

I would say the mongoose is a middle of the road box, and just looking at the box size helps to confirm this, but its still too loud for me.

I  have been lucky enough to find a second hand Racing Beat Exhaust, which should be with me soon. So will give it a go and report back here as to my thoughts. If I like it, I will have a mongoose box up for grabs.

Blitz Nur Spec:flamed  sh*t Your neighbours, no take that back your neighbourhood is going to hate you.

Have to agree on this, my old exhuast never popped and flamed but the NUR spec does that loads, I guess it shows how good the flow of the Blitz is

I’ve got a HKS one on mine.. I do worry about annoying the neighbours at silly times of the day  ( Only a little bit though)  Esp when I need to run it a few mins longer for cooling it down and I dont have a turbo timer on it which means i have to sit there and get stared at. To make matters worse, I don\'t have the silencer on it at the moment either as the folk at my work took it off and hid the bloody thing.. :Laugh

Update. Swaped the custom chrome back box onto my recently acquired large street port single turbo rex. It seems these mods make the car harder to keep quiet! It is now as loud as my stock twin car was with the Blitz! Both have silenced mid pipes. Does any one know if the RB box will flow well enough for a TA45 turbo engine? Its all 3" bore at the moment.

MAX is the only one I know who has sorted the problem with a Feed mid box and Feed back box. To my knowledge the Feed exhaust is the only true performance exhaust.
I run the Feed mid box with a HKS back box, on low boost I can do most tracks but when I open her up on full boost ( at the end of the track day ) I always get a Black Flag for some reason. Well you have to buzz the tower, don\'t you.
Having said that the 3"-- Feed mid box alone is £350 + vat and I think the back box is about the same, so not cheap.
I will be having a 4" exhaust fitted in Jan 2007 and will sell off my mid box then.

Banter aside - Duno about a true techy explanation, but you have only got to look at the backboxes from one make to another to see why one could be louder than the next.

A blitz or a Nur spec for example has a cherry bomb for a back box, which you might as well not bother with for its silencing abilities. The cherry bombs only alter the note of the exhaust.

Other makes like my mongoose has a very small silencer in the mid pipe and a decent sizes silencer at the rear, but the path is straight through.

To get a really quiet box you must either need a huge straight through box with good baffles, or a handed entry and exit system. But this would seriously hinder the flow.

Have yet to see the racing beat, but guessing its got a good sized rear box, and due to the expense of them have good baffles inside.

The tailpipe will also makes a difference to the pitch and resonance of the exhaust, my mongoose has a huge single outlet which although quieter than most does give a deep noteult as a res, and drones a little at certain speeds as a result.

The twin Racing beat, will hopefully create some harmonics and create a raspier and higher pitched note.

Over the years and various jap performance cars I have never found any benefit from one free flow zorst to the next especially up to a 400bhp at the fly level. Beyond this I have found you need  a 3" on other cars beyond 400bhp. And not that i have got there yet 500+ probably does deserve a 4" system.

At my level of tune I won\'t get too hung up about the performance, more looking for the right noise, the potential of a few BHP loss here of there for a few lf/lb or torque gain here or there really don\'t bother me.

Which is another consideration - A zorst that flows very freely on a lower BHP car will decrease the backpressure and loose torque as a result. I would sooner have torque than BHP anyday. Torque is what you feel when you drive, and thats whats its all about IMHO.

Recently put an R-Magic 4" straight through system on my car with a huge Cherry bomb style can and 5" exit. The noise is unbeleivable, be it at idle, 3K revs and on full boost. I have to plug my ears on convoys. The fact I have a large street port probably doesn\'t help matters either lol!

I had a Blitz Nur-Spec on there before which I thought was loud! I would be interested to know what the best high flow silenced mid-pipe is, currently Feed appears to be the best although I know Apexi also does a rather nice one.

I have just ordered a Racing Beat single exit from rotechnics which should be here tomorrow so i too can make a comparison for peeps with large ports and singles. It is 3" all the way through so i am guessing it will still be ok for circa 500hp although that will have to wait for water injection and larger injectors. I am speaking to Kerim about this on Monday.

Dont think I can entirely agree with you last statement.

From my experience this is true for normally aspirated engines. On turbo engines the less restriction the better. But I repeat IMO. :)

Ok. Fitted the single exit Racing Beat tonight. LOVE IT! It can still be heard but bear in mind this car has large street port. I dont feel like a complete **** driving it now. The excessive noise ruined an otherwise outstanding car for me. I could not be happier!! Its got a great throaty sound and screams on WOT but I would put it in the below average noise bracket now as opposed to loud as f**k.

A big up to Rotechnics who were knowledgable and polite and got it to me before 10am this morning when I ordered it at 12 yesterday. :)

Sorry - been out for a blast:). I will take pics tomoz. Here\'s the downside - £442 delivered. This included an exhaust hanger (5.75+vat) and 3 good used mounting rubbers (15+vat) as mine had been changed at some point for aftermarket ones. Money well spent in my opinion.:cool

Well good news is my second hand racing beat turned up today. Downside is its rusty  , and for the money these things cost new would have really expected it to be stainless. Even my Mongoose is Stainless.

That aside the rust is only surface rust on the pipe and welds and nothing a wire brush and some high temperature paint won\'t sort out. On the plus side once I got past the rust thing, the build quality is very good on it, and the back box is huge, with 2 very nice tailpipes. I can see already that it would make a big difference to lowering the sound levels. Should be under the car this weekend all going well, and this will be with a mongoose small silenced mid section as well.

Here\'s an explaination to help people choose the right back box to suit their needs.

Straight through cherry bomb style back boxes are the loudest type. The shorter the silencer part, the bigger the bore and the thinner the silencer\'s cross section, the louder it\'ll be. Logical stuff, really.

Look at a standard rear box on an RX-7. The pipe goes into a box and comes out the other side, right?

Well, almost.

You see, the pipe goes in and zig zags in a "Z" shape, before coming out of the other side.. So in effect there\'s a lot more silencing there. Also, it\'s a thinner diameter both into and out of the silencer. Doesn\'t mean there\'s no performance. Knight Sports FD3S exhausts are quiet, but give excellent power characteristics. Same with RE-Amemiya\'s classic, Auto Exe\'s, etc.

So, as a rule of thumb - if there\'s a silencer section similar to the original backbox design, this will be quieter than a cherry bomb" styled design.

HKS, Trust, Apexi, Fujitsubo, etc, each make different exhausts. These larger companies usually make several for the FD3S. Saying a car has an HKS exhaust is like saying it has some Bridgestone tyres... There are often several different models from each exhaust specialist.

Sometimes seen people saying they have a "JASMA" exhaust. That one cracks me up. It stands for "Japan Auto Silencer Manufacturer\'s Association". It\'s not a brand... It\'s to state the exhaust complies to japanese road use standards only! :D

We sell Apexi\'s exhaust control valve, which may be useful for some of you. It\'s a manual butterfly valve which can be controlled from inside the car via either a cable (manual) or via an electric servo which has a programmable controller (City mode, revs mode, etc). A useful item for use where you don\'t want to wake the neighbours!

Hope this has helped :D

Miguel.

I love these exhaust threads.

I\'ve just fitted a hks downpipe, dragon silenced midpipe (the new style), and a tiger catback to my rex. Unfortunately I can\'t comment on the noise level because I\'ve still got to put all the pipes I\'d removed when doing the downpipe back in the engine bay.

I\'m dreading fireing her up incase it\'s too loud. :flamed

My exhaust has gone and had to put the cat back in for the MOT.

I have a silenced decat to put back in after the MOT but need to get a new exhaust.

How loud is the Nurspec ?
What about the Greddy Power Extreme 2 ?

Budget of no more than 450 really inc delivery.

I would rather have it noiser than quiet but not too loud that it wont be allowed on trackdays.

Is the Blitz really that loud lol

i had a straight through nurspec on mine, it was silly loud at WOT, and a deep loud rumble at idle, too loud for the wife(!) I came back down the m25 once with some mates following behind me in a M3, said they could hear it over a mile off. It was a nice rumble inside the cabin when driving though, still hear the stereo ok! Main problem was reversing it up the drive at home, made the conservatory vibrate and small ornaments fell off the shelf ! I miss it, but it wasn\'t subtle.

Fitted the racing beat - on the Magnex Mid pipe which has a small resonated section. VERY pleased with the result.

Its only taken a few desibles of the noise, but is definately quieter and now at a sensible level but still sounds like a sports car. Best of all is the note of the sound has totally changed, and now given a raspy higher pitched sound that almost sounds like a motorbike/ E46 M3

It no longer drones, and gives a nice rasp even when just accelorating up to say 3K revs.

In summary very pleased, like the sound level and note of the zorst, and better still its stopped a knock that I had from the rear which I thought was a knackered shock, but must have been the prevous box knocking against something. :)

Glad your liking the Blitz Kash!
Rob, the knocking you heard would most likely be the exhaist knocking against the diff casing, a bit of exhaust wrap will cue that.

I\'m thinking of getting an adjustable butterfly for mine at the moment as I really don\'t want to upset the neighbours abnd get on some tracdays too. I\'ve also seen R-Magic do a nice silenced midpipe theat will only lose about 10 bhp (Hyper rev vol.91).

Miguel, do you happen to know a really good silencer that won\'t lose me lots of power but will quieten the noise a bit. I was looking at the Apexi valve but they don\'t appear to make one big enough - the Apexi bung that opens and closes might be better but I don\'t know if it\'ll make it any quieter. Hyper rev has alot of mid-pipes in there but no guide to what difference it\'ll make or what cpsi is used for the internal metal makeup.

Ben

I use two apexi variable bungs on the cosmo, six am and a confined car port do not make for a happy neighbour.  These bungs do reduce the noise but definitly restrict exhaust flow despite what they say, but atleast you can take these off.

I\'ve got a feed downpipe, racing beat mid pipe (huge thing) and Ziegen Rear Silencer. More impressed with the noise level and didn\'t have any problems at oulton park. The one thing that i have found after swapping from a megan racing straight through mid pipe is a bit less grunt and now it backfires for fun (did before a little) and i get proper flames !

There are things you can do to get the noise level down !

Interesting good post Newera.

Well back to the bit I maybe able to help with:

QuoteUpdate.

Regarding the bore size obviously this is for the full length of the exhaust (did laugh when a guy having a performance cat back pipe on his Leon wanted "as big as possible, 3"" when every section the rest of his 2.5" reduced to 2.25" at the front & at every box. Rear 4" straight tip on 2.5 can.....awful).
Had this conversation a few times this week from a genned up guy working at the local powerflow (now now, he\'s heavily into his own tuning) who was getting stick from powerflow "why are you doing/ordering so much 3".
Powerflow rep said this again on a visit complaining (as 3" cost much more).
Long story & stats short:
3" bent piping all the way is good to flow 300-600bhp on a turbo (650 for N Asp - something the rep quoted not knowing the restriction to turbo gas). Bent piping will reduce around 1/4" at the bends (3" allowing up to 35deg bend before folding).
For a little more (up to an extra 50bhp I think) & no reduction the pipe has to be mandrell bent.
4" pipe can not be bent conventionally, it has to be mandrell bent. Costly & needed for 600bhp+ (Nascar territory).

Initially due to a hole in my rear box I went the cheaper route & for £270 had a stainless cat back with 3" box (chose length & sound) & lovely 3" slight oval tip done by Powerflow (now don\'t call me a cheapskate). I heard their packing afterwards was not so hot (from Magnaflow) & would get louder. 7 months on & fine, no prob, no change; loud but not overly.
Then I had a Magnaflow straight through stainless midpipe made £94 (not quite as nicely bent) & it got LOUD! The vibrating drone at motorway cruising & of course the flames.
I went back to Powerflow recently & had a short 3" box (their boxes do not reduce) put into the midpipe £40 (they like me/used to me, lol). Now the noise is nice, low and fairly loud, much quieter in car (almost like cat back but deeper & no do your head in motorway drone). Popping like a sod due to airpump reconnected, but soon it comes off; HKS downpipe awaiting fitting at this time which I am told will likely make it a bit louder again.........ho humm guess i\'ll see the result, lol.

By the way, I see plenty of cats for sale all the time (hanging onto mine just incase for now), which is good for those of us who need them.
But do you know that any cat is worth £35 in scrap (precious metals). Even small ones & we all know the RX7 cat is no small one (hear haggling already, lol).
It is good to offer them out first, but don\'t bin them....scrap them!

The Tiger back box is by far one of the best and also most reasonable priced exhaust\'s that I have come across.
We have put them on lot\'s of cars with an unsilenced midpipe.
On both stock twins and also mid size singles they work so well.
At low RPM they are very quiet, and at revs they sound really great.
They do not upset the neighbours but flow really well.
In the car there is none of the drone that you get with the top name Jap makes, all the noise goes out the back of the car.
Regards
Carl

I have a Racing Beat cat back - single exit - also. Standard centre section and CAT but replacement downpipe which also eliminates the pre-cat. Not what I would call noisy or rumbly at all. More of a wrasping purr. Very happy with it... but thinking of changing to a HKS Super Drager cat-back to be honest. Canny decide!?!

Hi

Send a pm to Clive at shy autos and he will send you a photo of the tiger back box...I had it sent but can not find it...

I also might be getting it as my car after getting a de cat silenced mid pipe (dragon) and with the HKS back box is a touch too loud.

I want however big box and a decent tail pipe in diameter...the HKS tail pipe I have is nearly 5"

Any any one any idea what looks as good as the HKS but it\'s quieter?

Regards,
Michaelb

Sorry for hijacking the thread, but my question is somewhat related.

My car is bone stock with precat and the original catalytic converter in place (so, original downpipe and midpipe).

Anyone used the A\'PEXi GT exhaust on an original setup like this before? How was sound? I\'m pretty sure it won\'t be all that bad as long as my precat and cat are still in place.

Another question related to this; Will I have the risk of boost creep with only a cat-back exhaust and an intake? Or will the boost creep come when I remove the precat and catalytic converter? I\'m getting my wastegate ported, but was hoping I can wait until some other things to save money. In my head the boost creep shouldn\'t be a problem with cats in place, but anyone have first hand experience here?

I think you\'ll be fine with the cat in place, but as soon as you open up the exhaust you may get boost creep. I still think the apexi gt backbox will be loud even with the cat in place. If you want a quiet exhaust, get one with a big baffle box and not a round cheery bomb type exhaust. The quiet exhausts off the top of me head are the racing beat, Re-amemiya dolphin,  and tiger, maybe more can\'t think of them?

I\'ve got a racing beat system (no cat).  At cruise it is very, very quiet.  On full boost it roars.

For me, it is the perfect compromise.  I\'ve also had several people tell me how nice it sounds.

I recommend it highly.

Chris

We have the Dragon designed tiger exhaust, mid and rear, exclusive to Dragon via us. Dragons Tiger exhausts are on the new and latest design, which is not available anywhere else. All other FD exhausts made by Tiger are on the old designs. This can be confirmed by Tiger on 01884 33454

You\'ve got the wrong URL - try http://www.mazdarx7.co.uk/ (http://www.mazdarx7.co.uk/). I\'ve also got a Racing Beat exhaust on both cars and I\'m happy with the sound, plus they\'re not too noisy so I can drive the cars for quite a while without getting a headache...

I went for the single tip and the bore is 3" external. I think it was circa £450 but if you want to know for sure call them, I don\'t think they bite!

My exhaust is now for sale is someone wants high performance and lower noise. Wont pee off your neighbours but sounds awesome still and mine showed just over 500hp fly with it so high performance and low noise IS possible!

Tiger silenced mid (24 months old) and the fantastic Racing Beat cat back single outlet (11 months old!)

Mazdarotaryparts price on the Racing Beat is £452.
