Title: Won\'t start :flamed
Post by: RX7 R2 on October 23, 2006, 10:45:25 PM
Hi,

I\'ve had my new toy, a \'95 35,000 mile RX7 for about 2.5months now. I\'ve driven it evey day and the only problems I\'ve suffered is a s**t exhaust which fell off and a bit of smoking, popping and farting and the odd cutting out after being driven hard. I\'ve come to the conclusion it is just because I\'m not use to the car and having the fear it needs a rebuild.

Evey day, hot or cold the car always starts first time every time with no struggling at all. Until Sunday. After a heavy night drinking on the Friday I wasn\'t feeling brave enought to get into the RX because of fear of totalling it so for the first day since I\'ve owned it it wasn\'t started.

I went out to her Sunday which was a damp morning as it had been raining heavy on Saturday night. I jumped in and turned the key. For a split second it sounded fine like it was any other day but for some reason it didn\'t fire, it then continued to wind over making no attempt to fire what so ever.

So I leave it a while and the same happens. Leave it over night and still the same and again all day but still no joy.

Any one any ideas where I should start.? I\'m not the most technical minded person but when pointed in the right direction I can normally cure most faults.

My first thoughts from reading other threads is to take out the spark plug and flush it out for if it\'s flooded.

You will also need to take out the fuel system fuse and turn her over with the plugs out to blow out any fuel. Make sure you put the plugs back in the same holes as you may be running different cold plugs leading and following.
The fuse box is the one on the right as you look into the engine bay, above the battery, it has EGI or something like that written on it, I think it\'s the 3rd one up from the front of the car.
Oh, and if you ever have to leave your FD somewhere you are not happy about and think someone might try and nick it, well thats the fuse to take with you. HTH. Good Luck.:Thumbs-up

sounds flooded mate, do a search. if its not bad you can pull the egi fuse and turn the car over and pump the fuel out put the fuse back in and she will fire.

matt

*edit* beaten by warthog but i do like the idea of extra immobiliser.

Yep sounds flooded.

I hope for your sake its not as bigger bitch to start as mine was when I flooded her :(

As the others have said, pull the EGI relay, pull the leading sparkplugs, crank the engine over for about 5x 15 seconds, refit the plugs and relay and try again.

If that doesn\'t work then repeat the process and after the 5th crank to blow the fuel out, use a syringe and inject about 10ml of oil into each chamber.  Rotate the engine clockwise a few times, refit the plugs, egi relay and try again.

When she starts she will idle like crap for a good 5 or 10 minutes, you\'ll have white smoke, popping, shaking etc but she will settle down :)

Good luck!

Best to warm the plugs up using a burner or gas ring too, burns off the excess fuel and they are easier to start with warmed plugs.

turn on the ignition and see if you can hear the fuel pump buzzing away. if not check the relay/fuse in the engine bay and also the one in the drivers footwell for the fuel pump. if they have gone just replace them and try again. if it blows them again then you could well have a earth in the line somewhere like i did. after it rained the wire must of got damp somewhere and with worn insulation earthed with the body. this kept drawing too much current and blew the fuses. a quick game of chase the earth followed and the suspect wire was replaced. it hasent blown since. just another suggestion if the flooded path leads no where :Thumbs-up

Cheers for all the advice. I went out, removed the relay and spun it over. At first the smell of fuel nearly killed me but on the third time it sounded like it was trying to fire again. I put the relay back in and it made attempts to fire but wasn\'t enought to keep itself running. After running it on the starter motor for about 12 second it ran it\'s self. A few revs from the throttle and it was as smooth as ever.:Thumbs-up

Thanks again for all the help. Once last question if I can ask. Anyone any ideas why they do this.

The only thought I have (which is probably way off the mark) is when I park it up, after it\'s been left to cool down, it is reversed in and in doing this I keep reving it then turn it off without leaving it to tick over settle down. Could this be filling the engine with fuel hence the flooding when i came to start it?:Talking1

I always rev her before I turn her off to clear the tubes.

It should just fire up on the key no right or left foot.
However, I always dip the clutch to free the drag on the engine and then just turn the key no right foot. My FD has some heavey porting and I run the 044 fuel pump with 1680 secondary injectors so she dumps in a lot of fuel. Some people rate right foot flat to the floor and turn the key.
:wiggle Hard to say whats best as they are all individual beasts.

When I start her I don\'t do either just turn the key and normally up she fires no struggling at all. At the minute that\'s on a standard car with just an apexi back box.
