Title: can\'t get anymore than 0.64 bar boost. ??
Post by: RobEVo5 on October 22, 2006, 06:14:24 PM
I am only boosting 0.64 bar boost, and tried drastically changing the boost target on the PFC and it does not seem to make any difference.

My turbo\'s are now running non sequential and was done by the previous owner.

Could the boost control solenoid be defective, could it be the plumbing say from the turbo/actuactor to boost control solenoid ?.

I would appear to have one hose coming from the turbo outlet nipple into the actuator then a hose coming out the actuator to the bottom connection on the boost control solenoid. I have 2 hoses coming out the inake before the turbo which all seem to merge back to the same place along with one pipe that is connected to the top nipple connection of the boost control solenoid.

Does this plumbing sound right for a non sequential set up. ? Looking at the amount of hoses, It would surpise me if the former keeper got this wrong.

Or perhaps I have the boost duty in the hand controller completly in the wrong zone ?. What boost duty are others running to get say 0.8bar boost ?

I suppose the actuator could be leaking as well, but favour the probability that the plumbing is wrong.

I have encountered this sort of problem on a scoob, and because the plumbing was wrong it was effectively limiting boost and putting it in limp mode.

IIRC boost duty is somewhere in the 50\'s for 0.9 bar, up to 64% for 1 bar.

If adjusting the boost duty cycle isnt doing anything id say its some sort of plumbing problem (i\'ll let someone more techinal answer that). BTW dont think adjusting the boost target changes the boost (just alters where boost cut/fuel occurs).

I\'ve use boost duty to alter the overboosting I had at first (before mapping session, then again to increase boost at various drag days. So either plumbing or something to do with non-sequential, or maybe even faulty solenoid?

Thanks - Have tried boost duty in all these areas and some an no difference. So like you thinking that its plumbing, or possibly the PFC not being able to handle the non sequential modifcation and maybe I need an apexi AVCR.

will try a manual boost controller at some point and see if I still only get 0.64bar boost. If so then it can only be due to plumbing.

Like I say im not the most technical with the rats nest :) but if all was well the twins would respond to duty cycle changes.

Theres a good site somewhere that has loads of hints for finding boost problems on the twins, just cant remember where it is, i\'ll post it up if I find it

There is nothing wrong with it. Its just not possible to up the boost via the apexi unless you have the seperate apexi boost control solinoid (about £200 i think) or you can buy a boost controller ( might aswell keep it apexi for £300).
The wastegate has been ported and matched. The pipe has a modified pill in it to keep boost as close to 10psi as i could.

Found this website which is useful. scroll down and it gives a exploded view on the plumbing on a twin set up.

http://www.fd3s.net/non-sequential.html

Looking at it I would say mine is about right, but I only have one boost control solenoid - I would suspect the PFC don\'t know quite what to make of things, and will definately need to try a MBC before I look to much further..

I suspect your right matey, I had a conversation about this on another regarding putting a single turbo on and still having boost control with PFC (basically cant, need MBC or BC), going non-sequential must be the same.

Hello mate, glad you still frequenting the forums, and thanks for confirming my thoughts. It holds 10psi on the nose. Still reading and learning, but whats this modified pill thing ???. could it be modified again to hold a higher boost.

Getting /got my head round the mapping side of things and got myself a wideband etc, and now looking to push the the limits of the car.

Hi
Pill is in the actuator line. limits boost which was one of mazdas ways of controlling the boost. i drilled it  bigger as once i had done the non sequential it had boost of about 14psi. So that settled it down to as close to 10 as i could get it as didnt want to push it. 10 is standard by the way. You are best with a boost controller for higher boost as the pill idea is not great for changing boost at your will.

Great - The method you used does give VERY reliable boost though. I assmue you got 14psi was on a stock pill (tube insert with a hole in it restricting flow) ?.

12-14psi, is where I would like to be with right fueling etc.

I am not a fan of manual boost controller as the spring can give spikes, and the Apexi AVCR is very nice but bloody expensive, but will let me adjust the boost curve through the rev range though, and let me push higher boost in the mid range and tail off at the top back to around 10psi. and let me have a high and low boost setting.

So looks like I should save up and do the job properly.

Yeah just a restrictor

Rob,

Sounds like it\'s just like the restrictor in the scoobs limiting the boost bled away from the acturator. Just a bit of brass with a small hole drilled through it.

Second hand AVCR brought and on its way. With a bit of luck will be in place before the weekends out :)

Plus a Racing beat quieter zorst as the current one is doing my head in.

0.8bar + here we come. :D -
