Title: What model?
Post by: dral on November 29, 2003, 06:00:58 PM
Hello,
I\'ve been out today looking for a 3 gen RX-7, i\'ve seen one that look good but i\'m not sure which model it is.   I\'m after the stiffer set up of a type-r.  The best one i saw today was marked a 1992 model with FDS3 (or3S I\'m not sure now..) on the VIN plate, the dealer wasn\'t too sure which model it was.  I noticed it didn\'t have a front anti roll strut but i didn\'t know where to look for the second oil cooler.

Is that part of the VIN enough to identify the model?

No thats not enough.  They will all have FD3S if they are an import (thats why we call them FD\'s).  I dont think UK cars use that chassis number but not sure.

The twin oil coolers should be in both vents on the outside of the front bumper, just below the indicators.  One either side.

Cheers
Lee

& to be honest from what little i know there\'s not a lot between the various models & there\'s that many bits which can be added easily enough it\'s nearly impossible to narrow it down with ease ;) best bet is to try & ensure it is a well cared for & healthy FD (or very healthy priced;)) as example i have type R bathurst \'96 which doesn\'t have any strut braces but is well healthy & pucker in all the important ways on route from Japan & i can fit braces for a few hundred quid init (http://www.gamers-forums.com/smilies/contrib/blackeye/stretch.gif)
BTW have you read the model guide here (http://www.mazdarotaryclub.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=394)  it\'s got all you could probably want to know (http://smilies.networkessence.net/s/cwm/cwm/spiny.gif)

Thanks for your quick help.:)

I\'m going to be a little picky about car i get, there is any rush to get one (other than i want it now of course:) )  I\'d like to get one with everything i want rather than paying to add it later.  Ideally i\'d like an RZ or R2, but as they\'re so rare i think any type-r would be great.

I have read through the model guide, very very useful.  I\'m just hoping for dry day to have good test drive :)

if yer not in a rush my advice wood be to try one of the importers such as newera or the roaty imports etc that are on here to find you sumin fruity. The wait is painfull in that it will of taken circa 4 months with newera to get my baby but the wait & costs & spec bonus of getting one from Japan should make it all worthwile.
How you go about getting one is obviously up to you but for me the importing route seemed preferable (http://www.gamers-forums.com/smilies/ups/mtk/twinkle.gif)
