Title: loads of smoke on starting
Post by: jamie_eaton on October 17, 2006, 09:03:18 PM
hello guys im faced with this problem lately, when i start the car up it idles fine i suppose but the slightest touch of the accelerator and it sounds so sluggish, like there is only 1 spark plug in there and there is loads of smoke after about 20 seconds it is fine and the car runs fine as anything, turn it off and restart it and the problem happens again,, im hopeing its just a case of taking the spark plugs out and giving them a clean, but could it sound like anything else? cheers in advance,, J

Just give it the usual check over.

The usual suspects:
Plugs
Vaccum Lines
Map Sensor
Intakes
Any loss of coolant

Does it drive ok?

it drives perfectly fine, confuses me why this is happening

Hmm...even if you start it, stop it and restart within a few seconds does it do it?

Sounds like worn piston rings to me:Viking  What colour is the smoke, if you have an even idle it is not likely to be low compression are you losing any water? When was the last time you serviced her.
I dont know your setup, but it might be a case of giving it a good dose of WAT to clear it out, these engines need to see full boost every time you drive it. It could be just fouled plugs. hth

it is white smoke i suppose when i had it tuned by pip not so long ago he sadi the compression was spot on, its not loosing water no and it was serviced maybe 6 months ago, but have only driven it about 10 times since then, im hardy in it

Are you shore its White? a mate had a problem with his Turbo and it kicked a Mix of Black and Blue Smake out for 5 seconds on start up (only after a good thrashing though the day before) It was fixed with a Oil catch tank.

But if your Sure its White then Oldone will be on the Money.

Right guys i\'ve tokk the spark plugs out and have them a good clean, they were well bad but seem and look on now.
Checked the oil catch tank,, not a drop of oil in it, i\'ve had that on well over a year now.
It still seems to be doing it, it smells really badly of fuel i was in my garage with the engine running and now i stink of petrol.
The smoke was a bit darker and lasted quite a while this time, also the engine idle was up and down,, i took a small vid on my phone to show, hope this helps me out cheers J

How does it start? does it take a bit of getting going or does it start first turn.

Once it clears does it feel ok? or does it still feel like its holding back?

Have you had a look at Vac lines or Possably Map sencer? Its a bit hard to tell but it could possably be running mad rich?? Maybe a dodgy Injector??

Watched the vid, looks like she\'s running really rich.Mine does similar but clears when warm, only ever from cold Is she using much oil?

Mine does very similiar.

When I start mine the exhaust fumes are white/blue, stink and really sting your eyes! When its warm it goes away but then I sometimes get some black smoke that I notice at lights.

Starts and runs smooth?

Right it starts great first time every time, once it clears it seems ok no problems just starting up is a nightmare for about a minute.
Where is the map sencer? i may have a vac line off actually ill look into it,, i did think that my fuel rail was leaking a little petrol i had to tighten it up, looked like a small ammount of petrol was coming out of the injector seat.
would the car running rich cause these problems? as it smell so much after a drive i have to change my clothes!!!

Yeah mines the same, only after starting from cold I get the blue smoke.

Off to have mine MOTd tomorrow and hoping it will pass the pre 1994 non cat test as I understand even these have limits ?

When starting mine I sometimes get the smell of petrol in the cabin for the first 30 secs or so, never really looked into why but reading this has made me think I need to check it out.

ok ive just taken it out for about 7 miles drive and nearly used about £10 of fuel!!.
It starts a lot better now the plugs are cleaned up, but now while driving if i ease of the accelerator in seems to judder a a fair bit,, i need to keep my foot on the pedal it seems, but when driving it seems fine,, then stop at the lights and its reving up and down like in the video, any more ideas,,? cheers J

Just seen your vid.... mine puts out alot more than that on initial start up for maybe about 10 seconds, then it clears and is fine (only does it the first time I start the car after it\'s been stood for a while!!!)

I was lead to believe that this was normal as the jets that put the oil in to the rotor housings tend to drip on the earlyer cars if they wernt started for a while (problem resolved  in 96 I think??) which is why you get exessive smoke one initial cold start up?!!

Well it has to be either water, oil or fuel.

You can get a test done at a garage, where they use a sniffer thing (cant remember actual name) over your radiator (cap off) to see if any fuel mixture is leaking into the cooling system. If not then at least you can rule out water.

Do you use the standard ECU or after market?

Maybe get a tune too, might save you some gas and solve the problem. Infact I would do this first.

I have been thinking about this for a bit, I was helping my Old man put the Engine back in his 72 Elan, To cut a Long story short, I wired it up as it came from the factory and kicked it up only to be Inveloped by Blue/White smoke after a few minutes i tunred it off and went went home (was going dark and all) next day kicked it up same again (loads of smoke until it warmed up a Bit) then My dad informed me it was becouse i had not put the Ignition Booster back on (electronic Ign thingy) and after that went on it did\'nt do it again?

Makes Me think you may have a Dodgy coil? Does the Fd engine still use Split Ign on Idle?

You said the plugs looked bad.

Replace them. The rotary is hard on plugs and you cant really extend their life by cleaning and adjusting.

ok my problem has worsend, i think it is deff over fueling, it would not start at all and really struggled.
it finally started but kicked so much black smoke out and sounded terrible it was reving up and down non stop, i had about £10 worth of fuel and it all went in no more than 10 minutes every drop i could see the fuel dial going down.
I have the apexi commander, could i sort it using this?h

Joeh, there is no carburettor. First thing to do is replace the sparkplugs.

Hi Martiny, I changed the spark plugs to mazda manual recommendations

( 2xBUR9EQP and 2xBUR7EQP ) it only solved my boost problem, its still running rich and acting weird... O__O
