Title: Twin turbo upgrade
Post by: blackrex on October 15, 2006, 10:38:57 PM
I love the twin turbos on my rex i dont really want to go down the single turbo route i was just wondering what were my options with upgrading the the twin\'s to gain more power.

How much power do you want?

If you have all the Fuel mods,PFC,Intercooler etc you can run 300-320rwhp on the Stock twins any more will need some work doing on the Turbo\'s (Bigger Compressors and 360 bearings)

Depends on what you want.

non-sequential set-up route...big whack in one go...but laggy

In that case you may as well get a Single Turbo as non-sequential act like a Single but don\'t make as much Power and from what i heard Spool alot slower.

The Only reason this would be a Good idea is if you are having Vac Problems, there just not designed to have the Secondry Turbo on all the time.

But on the Up side it does make a little more power per Psi, but put two 300rwhp cars one with non-sequential the other With sequential race on a Track, which would come off better i wounder?

makes me think...

depends what rpm the engine is at full chat on i guess...where ever the power and torque band spreads the widest

TBH i think on a Track they would be simalar (Revs over 4k) its in Trafic and low revs you\'d notice it more.

If you\'ve got a fair size budget you could go for a set of BNR stage 3\'s with bigger compressors and 360 thrust bearings, etc, like Grizzly mentioned.

http://www.bnrturbos.com/3rdGen.htm

Its one of those things though that the cost of doing it can get near the cost of getting a single turbo so depends how much you like the twins!

I always say I want to stick with the twins but ive never driven a single turbo car so am a bit biased, seems to be some good singles about now which make their boost quite early and have a largeish power band. I\'ll probably end up  maxing out the twins (eventually) then ache for more grunt so go single in the end :)

Im of the same thinking as you mate, I have heard of people fitting different internals to there twins. I dont think i want to go along the non-sequential set-up route. However like you say if i have a go in single turbo rex i will probably change my mind!

Let us know what you do in the end matey, I wouldnt  mind an upgrade of the twins if funds allow one day. Be interested if theres somewhere in the UK that do something like BNR do

Could be interested...:) Money is a huge variable at the moment though due to house moves and what not, but if its still about and it turns out im up a few pennies might give that some thought :)

The idea of doing a full re-build myself is a bit daunting, but an engine swap is more do-able, and would give me a chance to spray the engine bay as a re-spray is the other thing im planning.

Oh just re-read your post John, is it the engine your going to be selling or the whole car?

Blimey not a bad price.

If you were thinking about getting them new (for about $2800 I think they go for) ive heard the gain is very minimal so not worth it, still have 270 degree bearings so cant up the boost any more than normal ones. Although you do gain a bit of efficency from the better design.

But at that price would be worth a punt especially if someone twins are getting a bit tired.

Oh and can vouch for RHD, brought some stuff off them a while back and it arrived in good nick and good time

You would have to factor in the rest of the turbo pack unless you re-used your own, and would that include post and duty?

Scuttle: Would be just the engine, need the funds to build my new engine project.

dont think it includes post but as there used I didnt have to pay any duty, dont know if thats still the way it works been a while since i brought anything abroad.

Sounds good John i\'ll keep an eye open for that and a kidney on ice, would you be after a core in part ex for your new engine project (assuming your not adding rotors, or getting involved with them horrible piston things :D)

Gone already.

RHD are cool in that they will happily lower the value of stuff for customs, so you don\'t have to pay the duty !
