Hi all,
I\'ve loved RX7\'s for the last 4/5 years but have always ruled them out as being too expensive to purchase, maintain and run.
However, a recent change of circumstances (moving back in with the parents!! :Laugh ) means I am now in the market for one!
Anyway, just thought I\'d say hi, I\'ll mainly be lurking around reading the technical threads and in the classifieds seeing what is about.
My first port of call is to nip down to Bristol to some of the import centres and see if I can take a few out for a spin just to see what they drive like and if I\'ll be comfortable behind the wheel (I\'m rather petite!)
Anyone else on here round my neck of the woods? I\'m in Cheltenham. Keep seeing a lovely yellow Rex about, anyone on here?
Anyway,
any advice or info gratefully received and thanks,
Helen
hi and welcome
matt
Not sure whose the yellow rex will be but i will shortly be selling ablack RX7 - its got a brand new engine in it (Freshly rebuilt) with new rotor housings, all seals tips bearings and rubbers etc, leather interior, auto box, stereo included with bose sound system; yours for 6.5k :)
It\'s not run in yet though so no point coming to see it just yet, ill let you know when it is and if your interested then you can come see :)
Which import centres are you looking at in Bristol? I wasn\'t aware of any when I was looking last year that dealt with RX7s. Sure you won\'t have trouble being too petite; they\'re not the roomiest of cars to fit into! Glad to see you want to try out a few; there\'s lots of varying quality around, and even a bad one can feel quite quick :) Also, be aware that when I was looking for mine, lots of places wouldn\'t let me drive one without an appointment (and some not even then!). Happy hunting :)
Hello and welcome, theres are few of us on here from around Worcestershire so not too far away. Happy hunting:cool
Hi Helen, welcome...
Another woman joins the fold...welcome:Thumbsup! . As has been said already; RX7 + Petite = Marriage made in heaven. ...:cheers

Unless its a first gen rex.... steering so heavy that woman driver would need to be big russian shotputter or wrestling type :chat
Hey Helen..Welcome to the site! :wave
Hallo and welcome :)
Hi all,
Thanks for the kind welcome! :chat
Bob - thanks for the info but I\'m not really after an auto.
Mave - I thought a couple of the import centres in Bristol dealt with RX7\'s, but I could be wrong?!! Also I was planning on phoning in advance, I\'m only 23 so think they might laugh at me if I just turned up!
Am really looking forward to it though my dad is trying to put me off as he thinks they will be to expensive to maintain and look after properly. I know he\'s secretly just worried as he knows he will end up having to fix it for me!! :)
Helen
Hi and welcome!
Being young is certainly a huge disadvantage - but your past the 21 barrier so it wont be too bad. There is a member on the forum with a signature that sums up rex ownership perfectly. Its something like..
Anyone who lives within their means, obviously doesnt own a rex!
After driving one, I didnt care about the cost. I just had to have one! I\'m sure you\'ll be the same.
Chris
Quote from: helencooke01He thinks they will be to expensive to maintain and look after properly.
He is probably correct, these cars do require a high level of maintenance and running costs are very high....same for any supercar though and thats exactly what an FD is.
None of the Bristol import centres deal with rx7 or didnt last year when i visisted them as they claimed that they were \'too much trouble.\'
i wouldnt entertain purchasing one from anywhere else than here or FDUK to be honest but even then you must be careful, make sure you get a compression test done.
Hi Helen :)
Another Honda revs person over here then :)
DS, I\'m starting to think you\'re stalking me :chat
Red, I think I have some idea of running costs as my ex had an MR2 (probably why I am now a turbo snob!) and I\'m expecting it to be a bit more expensive than that.
Dean, I\'m in no hurry so I guess you\'re right, looking on here is a good idea. I would like to take a few out for a spin though, I don\'t think there\'s any point considering buying one before I know what they drive like and whether they will suit me.
Helen
Cheeky begger, I was here first! :cheers You\'re the one that wants to look after my car and now own one for yourself :cheers
Still a laydee with good taste so I\'m willing to over look it this once... just stay outta my garden ok :2Mad :mmmm :InLove ;)
Oh and about RX ownership, a bad one can do a bit of a Jeff\'s Skyline to you... so just take your time choosing it, keep it serviced as well. These should help:

Helen, I\'m sure a few of the local owners wouldn\'t mind taking you for a spin and possibly let you drive if they\'re really nice :)
The cost of ownership is very dependent on a) how well looked after the car is, b) ho modified it is and c) a little bit of good or bad fortune!
If the car has been well looked after and you continue to look after it running costs shouldn\'t be huge, obviously the more modified, the less reliable (normally) so the higher the running costs. The problem is part c no matter how well you look after your car, engines can go, water seals, oil control rings, apex seals, detonation are all causes of engine failure and will result in a rebuild being required, the bottom line is make sure you have the rebuild fund saved somewhere. This is true of ANY supercar and in fact compared to many the FD is relatively inexpensive to run!
welcome to the forum.
i\'ve had my rx for 8 months now and it\'s been as good as gold on the maintenance front, one of the most reliable cars i\'ve owned (touch wood), and i\'ve so far owned mr2\'s, 200sx s14a, supra, gto, impreza type r, soarer tt. so far all i\'ve done is an oil change and front brake pads :)
it\'s a bit thirsty but not a major issue as it\'s only my weekend play thing :D

I wouldnt worry about that Shafster is only three and a half foot and he can still see over the steering wheel. You should have no worries!
I\'m down in Bristol. If you need a second opinion, or a chat about them - let me know! Always happy to help out :)

My advice is take your time and get yourself a good one as once you have there will be no turning back!
I travel down to Cheltenham regulary from Worcester so if ever you want to have a close look at one just give us a shout.
Happy Hunting!!
Hi Helen

Cheers

Hey Helen
I live in Bristol and I have never seen an RX for sale in any of the import centres in Bristol so I wouldn\'t bother with any of them! If your around Bristol though give me a shout there is a few of us on here from Bristol N we\'ve been on about meeting up soon. You should come along n take a look at a few!:rollin
You ought to feel privilged Helen a newbie doesn\'t normally invoke such a strong response i wonder if it could have anything to do with you being female....:InLove
I\'m 23 and have had my car for three years and there nothing but trouble and absolute money pits but my god do i love it! :driving
Shop around for insurance there are some deals to be had!
Good Luck!
Thanks all,
Some good advice here but nothing bad enough to put me off yet!!
At the moment I\'m commuting from Cheltenham to Reading every day (working out my notice at a job) so will be at the Reading meet tonight, hopefully a few people from here will be there and I\'ve been offered a ride in an FC convertible so that should help :chat
Lum90 - I guess I am wasting my time looking at the Import Centres in Bristol then!! Just thought it would be nice to test drive one from a garage first rather than messing a private sale about.
Mazda Bait - you\'ve had the car since you were 20?!! That must have been expensive insurance back then!!
Anyway thanks again for the warm welcome.
Helen
My premium used to be horrendous but i\'ve managed to get it down to £700 all in on a limited mileage basis with 3 yrs no claims on this car. Like i said before though it is definitely worth it but don\'t be fooled they are expensive to run!
You may be better to buy a known car off this forum than a fresh import as at least you can find a bit of the history of the car out. Your often running totally blind on a new import.
Hi
Was speaking to a mate from the Forest of Dean.There\'s a garage closing down near Cinderford. They have a silver fd in for £5500 with certified rebuild. Its cheap because the guy is moving to spain.Might take a little less.Am calling him tomorrow to get all the spec. Can post it hear if you want?
Cheers
Pete
Hi Helen
Was good to meet you albeit briefly on Tuesday! Did you get a spin in Prof\'s FC or any of the FD boy\'s cars?
Helen got a short run in the FC - the deluxe 6 roundabout tour ! :eek :spank
I didn\'t go too lairy - we don\'t want to scare potential new owners off ;) Then later on she got treated to a longer run in an FD.
So Helen - did we persuade you to get a rotary ?:wiggle
Hello guys :wave
Was nice to meet you and thanks for the two passenger rides.
Prof, I was so impressed by the condition of your FC, was really lovely. And impressed by the ride.
I also really enjoyed going out in the FD, it was surprisingly quiet and smooth and so quick up to speeds! I want one even more now, I think next step is to actually have a drive in one myself to see how I like it.
Thanks again guys and nice to meet you all! :chat
Edit: Pete sorry I forgot to answer you! If you could post spec/contact details that would be great, thanks!

Hi,

Cheers,
Helen
