Title: Noob in Bristol
Post by: FTORich on October 11, 2006, 10:20:53 AM
Hi Guys

Just bought a 98 F3DS so will be on annoying the good and mighty with all the standard noob questions that search doesn\'t answer, anyone else here in the North Bristol area?

Main probs for now are noisy suspension and the Alternator light trilogy of charge, oil pressure and coolant.

Indeed it is, quite quaint, just a couple of pubs and the village shops. I live next to rose cottage. :D

Would be good, not sure what I do and don\'t have tbh it was a random ebay punt moment of madness. I know it has a new engine and turbos and clutch, plus some japanese ECU. BTW Whorefield is posh Southmead, your insurance must be expensive ;)

ish. My age and no claims discount helps. Paid £640 last year.

Oh, and don\'t trust these jap ECU\'s unless it happens to be the Apexi ECU. They\'re usually poorly mapped, and not really worth it. You\'d be wise to ditch it.

Is it stadard spec?

That was the question ^^

Oh and Rotary repair services? Of Notts compression tested the engine at 97psi front and 96 PSI rear, not sure how good/ bad this is?

Yeah, 6.5 bar each rotor - seems low. Isn\'t 8.5bar (125psi) meant to be very good? High 7s good, mid 7 ok (110psi), and anythign lower rubbish? (I may be wrong!)

Won\'t read too much into it, the guy came out to test, my understanding was that there were very few places who could do a good test?

"Something not quite right with that compression test on a rotary!" ?

Hi I was the guy that went out to do the compression test last night
(Greg from Rotary Repair Services).

The engine was showing "average to good" (my words) compression using the standard compression tester with Schroeder valve removed method.

97-97-97 psi on front rotor and 96-96-96 psi on rear rotor.

(That’s 6.7-6.7-6.7 & 6.6-6.6-6.6 in bar)

I wouldn\'t say anything was indicating that things were "not quite right".

This link here by Clive suggests that I should be adding 20% to figures from a "normal compression tester":

http://www.mazdarotaryclub.com/forums/showthread.php?t=107&highlight=compression

I record exactly what I get from the test gauge, and those figures I gave do not highlight any problems.

Greg

Sorry Greg, What i meant was it is usual to be a bit more specific as
in--(That’s 6.7-6.7-6.7 & 6.6-6.6-6.6 in bar)

not as a total which i would have thought could have one or two low readings when put down as

97psi front and 96 PSI rear,
Cheers Bob

You\'ll probably think WTF though cos I\'ll be in a s**t rusty Golf (the daily driver). I drive a first gen rx7 but she only comes out on nice days :cool  and isn\'t here at the moment.

Hi Greg, sorry if it came across that I was having a go at your work, you obviously work well beyond the working day ;) Had a minor panic that an engine that both looks and was reported to be fairly new, looked to be on it\'s last legs.

Cheers

Hi Rich,

Thanks, dont worry I didnt feel that you were having a go at me.

I entirely understand how you must have felt, and just thought it would be better to give you a bit more information about what those pressures meant to put your mind at ease.
