Title: My project RX7
Post by: Tdraper on October 10, 2006, 05:06:30 PM
Well I work for an importing company and they recently brought this in to learn a little more about RX7\'s, it has done 60k miles and obviously was due a rebuild, it had been driven for about a month and everything seemed fine with the car so maybe the rebuild had already been carried out?, no signs that anything was wrong?, one day though I decided to take it out and it blew up on me! so I bought it to learn about the engine and I am currently stripping and rebuilding it when I have spare time,

it\'s a 1992 and from looking around the forum it turn\'s out to be a type X, this wasnt one I had actually heard of before, it has full red leather(I\'ll be getting rid of),sun roof and full bose stereo system which is a nice touch,  I have big plans for this car, full respray in original colour and the vertex kit, I may even go single when I\'m rebuilding(undecided on the cost of things at the moment)

but I\'ll update on progress anyway,

here are some pics for now & how I\'d like it to look.

Hopefully next spring or earlier it\'ll be like this

Ok a lil update,

I\'ve finally found time and I got the engine out today, I may have done a couple of things differently to most I guess as I disconnected the loom from inside the passenger foot well, I did try to go through the maze of hoses underneath the manifold but this look like the easiest option!

anyway here\'s a couple of pics for now, hopefully soon i\'ll find out what when pop.

oh I\'ve stripped out my red leather too, so if anyone is intersted in buying this then let me know ;)

and this is probably the styling I will go for now,

Thing is now the engines out I\'m already thinking of going single, something which I wanted to do when I had my supra, hmm.....

99 look is the way I am going too. Good on ya.

Although nobody has a Vertex kit so you could be unique with that !!

the normal way is to remove the loom as you did.

That red one looks real good.

If you fancy going single,  do a little porting and go singe at the same time, its the easiest time to do it.

Yeah I love the 99 look, I love near stock and sublte styling, to prove, this was my old supra

there\'s just something about the vertex kit, as said it\'s not normally my taste but it seems like it\'s only the RX7 that can pull off the big wing and styling imo.

If the drivers side bolster is un damaged I would be interested in the front seats.

Sorry, missed the new comments, ok well I will be selling everything that\'s red in the car, even the seat belts etc, I honestly can\'t stand it! everything works fine on the seats and I\'d rather sell as a complete set, what I\'ll do is strip all the other bits from it tommorow and I\'ll get some decent pics up:)!

Ok extra pics of the leather, there\'s a couple of tears in the rears but defiantely repairable, fronts have no splits and passenger side is in very good condition, drivers side has worn and could do with retrimming.

if anyone is intersted then give me an email @ tomdrap7athotmail.com

Like I say I\'m planning on getting rid of every bit of red trim, so if someone wants the whole thing then let me know,

cheers Roy!

Ok another update,

Well removing the flywheel was nice and easy and only a 2 sec job thanks to air tools that were available ;) then I started removing turbo\'s etc, this took a good hour which was pretty good, the turbo\'s have a little shaft play in them but I think I\'ll ditch them for a single.

From here I started to remove boost pipes from hell but then could see that just undoing a few nuts pulled the whole section out  anyway here\'s a pic of the engine ready to be stripped apart

and to work with the tension bolts, I really wasnt prepared for the amount of coolant still in there once undone! doh! you\'ll need a lot of paper towels!!!

Ok from here I could prise the housing apart and look at what went bang, from looking at the rotor it\'s seems that one of the apex seals had broken apart and caused the nasty scrapes on the rotor and housing, I think I\'ve seen much worse pictures on the web of this though.

I had to finish up for the day there but I\'m hoping the front rotor/housing is ok so i\'ll get some pics of that up this week!

I\'ve searched a little for prices on rebuild kits but havent really found any guide prices, that and a new rotor and housing, hopefully it wont be too expensive!

Ok, well I havent been able to get to the other rotor yet as I can\'t seem to be able to remove the eccentric shaft nut!!! this is even with airtools, so it looks like I\'ll need to be applying some heat to remove this! problem I came across though is that it looks like I\'ll be needing new housings, rotors, well the lot really and this from a bit of searching is way over my budget for the moment,so not sure what to do! I may even stop where I am and have to break the thing!

Yep hi Travis, sadly breaking this rex though, wouldnt have been very cost effective in the end which is a shame, i\'ll be buying another though, on a side note I\'ve still been unable to get the eccentric shaft nut off to get to the other rotor! lol, it just won\'t budge!

36" stiltons on the pully wheel and a scaffold pole on the breaker bar, I thought it would be easier to take off than the other nut but my air gun wouldn`t budge it either!! it damage the pully though.
