Title: Tip failure symptoms..?
Post by: iaint on October 09, 2006, 09:11:32 AM
Hi all,

I had a fun day yesterday playing at Bruntingthorp alongside some exotica, car performed brilliantly until the end of a run where it was clearly running on one rotor.

Is it normal that the engine will run fine past 3krpm?  I couldn\'t tell that there was anything up with it at that level and boost was available...

My initial thoughts were that it was something electrical stopping one of the rotors working - I noticed the light on the side of the twin-spark was flickering and I thought it was usually a solid light.

Was planning on having the engine pulled for some extra porting this winter so it looks like the decision ahs been made for me! silver-linings and all that!

As i understand it, yes, the engine will appear to run fine at higher revs when a tip is thrown.

Did the other rotor eventually run? How did it idle if it did?

at higher revs it will just be a little lumpy but at idle the boost gge will fluctuate and flutter as the compression is lost
starting when warm will be really bad and not good at cold
my car was shaking and had cracked 2 tips

Idle is very very rough.  Second rotor does not appear to fire at all at low rpm.  Seems to run fine, not even a little rough from 3krpm.

Started okay from hot - little pop and stumbled to life.

I suspect the higher rpm means gas doesn\'t have time to leak into the other chamber so it appears to run fine!  Must be a fairly small failure for it to run as nicely as it does!

Hopefully not too much damage to the turbo from expelled metal fragments!

yep sounds like a cracked seal or missing corner seal, join the club did mine on my final fun due to a missfire.
The Twin power will flicker at idle as the alternator is not supplying enough voltage when running on one Rotor.
You should get away with just having your tips replaced, I have been lucky once already

Had already talked to Geff about a \'minor\' expansion of the porting.  Was thinking of something resembling the Grand Canyon :D

Fingers crossed that there\'s not much ancillary damage!

Simple Defo test.

take the EGI fuse out and A rear Plug and spin it over (listen to the Noise it makes)

Then refit the plug and do the same to the Front (remove a Plug and spin over), if you have a Bad Seal there will be a diffrence in the Noise they make.

A good engine should be Even and the same volume (and front and rear will sound the same) Don\'t forget to remove the EGI Fuse.
