Title: FD, just a straight line cruiser??
Post by: J.j. on October 07, 2006, 08:29:40 PM
Can someone help me comparing strength and weakness of these 3 cars please.

FD3s vs S2000 vs DC2

both on track and on road please, in terms of both straight line and cornering.

Cheers

Well ive had a DC2 and an FD.

My DC2 was pretty stock apart from spoon (well showa with spoon branding) fixed springs and dampers and a full exhaust system and kk&N panel filter in stock airbox. Straight Line, theres not an awful lot in it with a stock FD..yes the FD pulls far better especially in 3rd and 4th.
On my favourite 6 mile long b-road, i found the fd (with a not running right engine) to be slightly quicker..i reckon with a running right engine, it would be considerably quick. At the Nurburgring, I set a BTG time of 9:23 with passenger in the Integra. Ive seen on here in someones sig that they posted a 9:15 (NurburgRob) in their rex with passenger and aircon. Quarter mile on a stock DC2 is mid to low 14s

Never driven an S2k but from my understanding, its very similar to a rex in all respects

Just to add.... THe DC2 is an exceptional car....very fast on track in standard form. Quarter mile on a stock DC2 is mid 14s

different drivers etc...and i dont know where he was timing from...my timing was BTG. He might have been timing gate to gate. The thing is, the key to driving the ring fast in a car like the teg is to be economical with the brakes as on some sections of uphill, if you brake too much, youlll lose 5-6 sconds on the uphills.

anyone\'s driven both FD and S2000 ?
Im in no dout that S2000 is a good car, but can see how it can kill FD on a track.  Am I missing something here :Hammer

What about Brands hatch?
I know a mate who did a 1.01 or 1.00 there in a DC2

My mate had an S2000. In 1st and 2nd, maybe not a lot in it but after that the S2000 would be miles behind. I can\'t comment on handling but from what I saw the S2000 seemed more forgiving.

hi guys this is my first post so be gentle. lol

im 19 and have an fd 93 import. recently my dad was cosidering a s2000 and borrowed a friends while he was on holiday. we took it to bruntingthorpe along with my mazda and my dads E55 amg. the fastest was the e55 as it was deresticted but round a circuit the fd was quickest by quite a bit but a handful when going full out. the fd is an exceptionally handling car when all running good but its gna bite your head off quick when you over do it. s2000 much more forgivable and easier to have fun in f your lookin for easy power slides.

I\'ve driven Fd\'s and S2000\'s and i have to say the Honda\'s drive completely diffrently, i feel you have to keep the revs alot higher up the Rev range so it does\'nt feel as quick when your crusing at say 60mph and floor it.

Then you have the fact the FD is a Turbo and so little mod\'s give big gains but in turn the Honda tends to use less Fuel.

As has already been said though if you want a Track day car and have some Driving Skills there isn\'t alot that will touch an FD round a Track in its Class.

I\'ve given up now.  Just got told in my face that a mini works would kill an 400 bhp FD on track as well, so all in all, FDs are just nothing but fast straight line cruisers which breaks down every other second

1-standard S2000
2-standard DC2
3-standard DC5
4-standard Mini works
5-maybe a 400 bhp FD(before they come up with anything else)

Got told my car is so ****e that it aint worth keeping and how I shouldnt do the Nurburgring trip coz my car would just break down on the way or on the ring

Buy a Mildly tuned Fd some thing like 300rwhp with decent tyres,Pads and struts

Then let them keep up round a Track in a Mini. You don\'t need 400hp to own all N/A Honda\'s/Mini\'s its not always about power to weight but more about Ballance and CoG and if an FD has been tuned properly it is reliable? its only when you get people bolting on bits and not having the Fueling to cope that problems start to happen. If you buy an FD that has had a Rebuild there is no reason it won\'t last along time if looked after.

People scorn what they don\'t understand.

it maybe so that an fd is just a straight line cruiser...but where does this leave skylines and supras? Im my experience, skylines (well maybe not r34s nut they got newwer technology) are worse on track as are supras. And how an ITR can own an mildly tuned fd on track i dont understand...

Been out on track a couple of times and you find yourself chasing the super 7\'s, can a mini say it can do that. If the suspension is setup right it goes round a bend like its on rails !

What kind of mini is it, if its a new one they are stupidly slow !

Please, can some of you track junkies make it to Donnington on the 11th of Nov? apparently there\'ll be lots of Type Rs (S2000, ITR, ........)
I\'ve been told over and over again that I\'d get my arse kicked by all of them, even by drivers with similar driving skill to me coz I drive a FD:2eek .(hands up, Im rubbish, but I\'ve never taken them out in my car apart from a short cruise one time, so not, they didnt get the ideas from my crappy driving:Hammer :rollin )
Someone please shut them up on track once and for all  :cheers

I think they must be winding you up, I can get round brands in 1.05 in a standard Mk1 MR2 with 120 bhp and on Yoko A539\'s... Sure it\'s stripped out but still weighs 1040 kg and has cr@ppy McPherson struts.

Now I\'m not the fastest out there by a long way, but the front runners in the racing are putting in 1.02\'s, so would be happily chasing your mate in his DC2 in a car from 1986 with a 1.6 engine ;)

http://www.750mc.co.uk/Racing/results/2006/Brands10-11-06-06/Brands_Hatch_10-11th_June_MR2.pdf

So much circuit speeds comes down to talent! And personally I love the \'ring, but I\'m impressed with peoples times but I\'d never judge anyone on it, it\'s such a dangerous place that just getting round is impressive IMHO!

So for me, I\'m looking forward to getting my FD on the track and giving it some serious abuse ;)

An ITR will not own an FD, its as simple as that.

My prelude vtec gets around every track I\'ve been too quicker than most DC2s, in fact if you look at Honda Revolutions\' forum, you\'ll see how the ITR drivers get upset about the ribbings they get from Lude owners.

My standard FD handled as well as my track prep\'d Prelude so it\'ll be better than the Integra.

As for the S2000.... in standard form they are probably very close.

Tuned, the FD wins evertime :)

I had an S2000 before the FD.  Lovely car, fantastic to drive and quite fast as well.  But an FD would KILL IT on the track.  You wouldnt even put these cars in the same league.  I personally didnt think the S2000 had great handling, I found the back end unpredictable.  Yeah, the FD can whip the back end out easier, but I find it easier to control.  I did regular track days in the S2000 and found for the track it just wasnt all that.   I put uprated springs and dampers on mine and took it to a Honda specialist in Daventry to have the suspension set up to try to improve things.  It did improve but still not great.  Before the S2000 I did have a Lotus Elise, so I suppose I was spoilt for handling, and maybe it isnt quite fair to judge it after coming from an Elise.  But going from the S2000 to the FD I felt like I had got the handling of the Elise back.  I did an activity day with the Lotus owners club a few months back, it included Caterhams and Elises.  I managed the second quickest time on the slalom and pretty sure I got in the top 5 on the top circuit. And remember, the circuit is a tight circuit ideally suited to the Elise, and obviously the slalom obviously suits them well. So anybody who says the FD is just a straight cruiser obviously doesnt know what they are talking about.

and any excuse to post up some pics of said cars  ;)

FD\'s are far from cr*p around a circuit, in fact if set up properly they are excellent on the track. Your mate who owned one and thought it sh**e probably had the misfortune to buy a badly sorted one. Also they do take a little more skill than some to drive at the limit. They are also leary in the wet. But it does sound like you are the victim of a mass wind up. As far as I understand, a mini works is an uprated Cooper S and no doubt good fun on the track, but its not an FD beater.

It works better when you rotate the wheel shaped thing in front of the instruments :driving :rollin

The best cars for track are things like westfields, ariel atom or other really low slung, low C of G cars with buckets of power and torque and no weight.

For a street car, there isn\'t much lighter and lower than an FD and they corner very well.

On paper an S2000 should pee all over me, but I have yet to be wet as they say ! :Giggle ;)

Lol @ the mini thing, having owned a mini and driven pretty much every jap car there is, the FD is the perfect drivers car, the steering weight, balance and turn in is incredible, I\'ve just bought one after selling my Supra TT, a mini even a works one would be left behind on the bends and the straights even in a near stock FD but again it is down to the driver, the FD is a better car.

The FD3 feels more like a sportscar than any other \'tin can\' ive driven. Which may explain why I spent so long in the kit car world before discovering them. I have to say i prefer them to both the s1 and s2 elise also, perhaps my expectations were too high for the lotus or maybe im just getting old.

Not on there much really but used to be more regular ;)

Had a S1 Exige back then, and totally agree that after driving an Elise you do get so spoilt for handling that anything you drive after seems, well, rubbish... The FD I\'m pleased to say does feel right again, just having proper double wishbones makes so much difference!

Now a SC\'d Honda would be the ultimate toy really! I went out in Christians SC\'d Exige and it sounded like a jet fighter! Truely mental machine! GL with it :D

on the track i overtook M3 after m3, porsche 968\'s, 911 turbos, ferraris (both on the twisties, granted alot of the ferraris werent balls out) and even kept up with a caged 911 GT RS on slicks for an entire lap - the driver was wearing a flame suit and a helmet.

Well a picture says a thousand words doesn\'t it.

Mazda\'s racing heritage allows their road cars inherit much of what Mazda learn on the circuit (Le Mans, Daytona, etc). Rx7\'s will always go around corners VERY FAST.
It just so happens they go fast in a straight line as well. :cool

You\'ve got nothing to worry about on the track mate.

My 9:15 at the Ring was ok but before I timed the recording I thought it was a slow 9:45.  I\'d only had my Rex 3 months at the time and it\'s got extremely hard tyres and is completely standard.

With more confidence and better tyres I seriously think I could get close to sub 8:30\'s, and that\'s in a standard car.

There is no point in comparing front and rear wheel drive cars, they are completely different.  Everyone is going to say their car is better than yours, only you really know how good your car is.  Over 250 bhp in a front wheel drive car and you\'re in trouble.

DC2 - I love Hondas, my last car was a Civic EG9. Front engine, front wheel drive, not worth comparing for driving experience.  Rather than using a LSD to corner under power in a Rex you use the right pedal and either your left or right butt cheek :)

S2000 - Probably pretty much even par with a standard rex but it doesn\'t look as good and doesn\'t have 90% of max torque at around 2900rpm does it? or the tuning capabilities I reckon.

Mini, sorry BMW - No comment.

The RX-7 is an unbelieveable car, power, handling, looks, it has it all.

If you know someone with a PS2 and GT4, drive these cars (standard) on there and you will learn a lot.

I think I\'m going to go for a drive right now, that\'s what a Rex does to you!

PS - I love Yokohamas too, you can actually see them wearing down they\'re so soft but on smooth roads in the dry - WOW!
