They look nice but what do they do and what are the benifits of having one.

That\'s a good question: lots of people have them, but do they know why?

I\'d like a bit more technical and detailed info of the benefits of them. And, for that matter, and drawbacks of them?

They are for catching overflowing oil when the presure builds up, having an open oil system is better for the engine i think, if it was all sealed up it could go back the wrong way along certain paths and cause problems i think.
So with an open system you either let the overflow spit out all over your engie/drivetrain/the road/your tyres, or you put a catch tank in. Some people put a gravity feed that drips it back into the system when the pressure is released. (car turned off)

I think the standard car doesnt have one cos it is closed system, stock power wont build enough pressure to cause damage i think, so only big power cars really need them.

(Disclaimer: the above statements were quoted from my own findings and may be incorrect or pure fiction, sorry!)

The main reason for having one is so that when you are on track you do not blow any oil onto the track. The pressure of full boost can cause the oil to blow out into the engine bay and there fore onto the track = someone skids off and your session is over.
The other thing it does is filter off the water/condesation from the mineral oil and is caught in the oil catch tank. When you empty it it\'s not nice stuff and you would not want to put it back in you engine. HTH.:wiggle

Now that\'s my reason to get one! :driving

So, very basicially is it just 2 hoses & the catch tank? Where do these hoses connect - is one by the oil filler?

My Fd is far from basic as it\'s a heavy modded RE engine and not an REW engine so my oil filler tube is different. But basic idea is on the REW engine one there are two connecters that come off it. ( casts mind back into the past so I may be wrong as I\'m old ) You blank off one and use the other as the feed to the oil catch tank. So it only has one feed into it. The other feed out of the oil catch tank is in fact an overflow pipe and goes to the open air, just in case it fills up before you empty it, therefore stopping the gunk feeding back into your engine. My understanding is they catch blowby oil mist (reduced octane rating due to blowby blah blah), one end connects to the filler and the other to a source of vaccuum (usually the air filter inlet pipe to the turbo - but this isn\'t always possible with some single conversions).

That still doesn\'t make such sense to me on a rotary... Do you still get blow by?

On a piston engine, any blow by through the rings causes pressure in the crankcase and then into the head... All piston engines vent crankcase pressure, but most vent into the airbox, so the excess oil, gunk and such like it burnt in the combustion chamber. A catch tank basically catches this rather than it being burnt in your intake and clogging up your throttle plates.

But I can\'t see where the pressure would build in a rotary? I assume it must somewhere if the catch tank is getting filled with oil...

mine is exactly the same-mounted under the engine damper. i take it you have to remove the damper bracket to empty it? i have not needed to do mine yet. also my damper vibrates when idling. anyone else had this problem? (oops straying off topic!)

Thank you for that - I have added that to my list of thing\'s to do! :)
