Title: My Shiney Engine is Back together
Post by: deanflowers on October 03, 2006, 10:08:32 AM
Its taken me a year and a half but my RX7 could be back on the road in the next month or so. Just need to get hold of a couple of small gaskets and a water hose.  Looking quite good now though i think, all bolt on parts are mirror polished

Cost has been a major issue with this project and ive had to buy and sell 7 different vehicles to finance this.

The cost just crept up and up, it was a very poor rebuild by hurleys, showing 4.5 compression both front and back on average.

It needed a new end plate, new rotor, new housings - there seemed to be evidence of a failure occurring with one housing yet all the tips etc i removed were intact!

many of the gaskets were missing, sealer was used everywhere without hesitation by the seems of it.

fuel pipes were perished

there was no thermostat fitted and both water sensors were broken on the back of the water pump.

Power steering pump was chipped but smashed during removal taking the casting with it, so had to replace that which was my fault.

All silicon pipe work was solid, brittle or split.

Turbo pack was wasnt good, second turbo was down on power and the manifold badly cracked. A replacement was sourced but again manifold was badly cracked and needed replacment. Hope its okay after taking 4 hours to line it all up properly.

The engine is standard as i could not afford to get it ported at the time or afford the extras required to get it running such as an apexi etc etc. I do aim to get one but cant afford it yet.

I need to buy one water hose, a sensor, throttle body gasket, oil and coolant in order to get it running

only big problem i have now is i need four 19" tyres so that i can drop it back on the tarmac and fit my cwest front which is already sprayed.

ive proberly spent a good £3500 doing this myself to a more or less standard spec, i was hoping it would be more like £2000 tops

3500!!! Blimey! That is a lot! The polishing looks excellent! Itll be one hell of a task keeping it that shiney though! especially with the standard engine bay!!!

I guess that screwing you got from import duty didnt help :(

Yeah, that is a lot - that\'s unfortunate. Mine cost £2900 including going single too (Although the single turbo was cheap)

Mine cost £2500 but I was lucky and bought a mint 3k engine+new plates for £1k. All I needed then was to buy new housings and a few gaskets.

I ported it myself so I\'ll be interested to see it on the strip.

Mine was a Hurley engine too. Similar problems. Just scrapped it all off as plates/rotors/housings were worthless.

Looks good mate. Autosol shares purchased!!

If you don\'t mind me asking what do you use to stop it Tarnishing? I had a few bits polished up a few years ago and if i left it too long it would go dull? Is there anything that i could use to keep the alloy all shiny?

BTW you must have spent some Quality time getting your Motor looking like that :yes

i got some metal treatment stuff from a bike place for ally that apparently helps it to keep its shiny finish for longer i guess only time will tell.

the rims are wheel mania 19" items but are no longer available

just one thing, dont get a vented bonnet. Ive got one and with any sign of rain all the shineyness of the engine bay turns to crud.

the rats nest looks so easy and less complicated with tho`s bright red hoses, im planning on doing this 2, not gunna go to the same lengths of polishing tho lol..

yea i know, ive got to do the airpump aswell, just finished polishing this too.

ive got to go back into the rats nest in the next couple of days as i forgot to put a part back underneath, will probably put zip ties on all the connections at the same time.

Wasn\'t the oil feed pipe to supply oil to the turbo\'s was it? I noticed that was missing from the first piccy.

there is a sort of solenoid that bolts on under the IM close to the middle injector connections. i am missing the part that bolts onto the LIM next to where the the metal pipe that follows the downpipe goes.

ive also got to check my connections as i think ive made a mistake with the green connector in the first pic.  Am i right in thinking that the connections for he injectors are two grey ones in the centre and two green ones on the end of the fuel rail?

This is the problem with disassembling it all over a year ago

Well, like i said - there\'s an oil line that bolts to the top of the cover plate, and it goes under the alternator and a couple of other things. Get that back in before you chuck the engine in - it\'ll make things slightly easier.

The injector connectors are ALL Grey. NOT GREEN!

There should be 2 or 3 green connectors under there. One green one goes to your fuel temp sensor, its the one that sticks out of the secondary fuel rail. The other green connector goes to your coolant temp sensor, it the back of the water pump housing.

see fuel temp sensor here-its the green one by the ACV. You can see half of it there, its not connected

See other green connector here...its the one under the hose on the left of the pic, plugging in <--- that way into the water pump housing. You can also see the secondary injector plug here, its just under the bottom left stud that attatches the LIM to the UIM,  its the grey one.

That makes sense, i had no idea what the one of the coolant sensors looked like as it had been smashed clean off. so i think its all right, which is a slight relief, still got to take the inlet manifold off to put in place one part i forgot not sure whether to cable tie the ends of all the vac hoses though, some people do and some dont.

Ive never bothered and never had any problems. Depends what diameter hose your using though, if it fits tight or not.
