Title: Air con, Go or stay??
Post by: Grizzly on September 27, 2006, 10:55:01 PM
Ok i\'m looking for Pro\'s and Con\'s for Air con.

I have been toying with the Idea of removing mine, i left it in when i rebuilt the engine as i didn\'t want to pull the dash at that point and didn\'t know if it would upset the PFC if i just removed the Pump and Rad etc.

Even though its all there i\'ve not regassed it, Every time i think i\'ll pull it out some one tells me not too. I have had these reasons up to now.

1. Add\'s Resale Value
2. Helps demist in Winter
3. Helps if you have Hay feaver (Don\'t know about this one??)

No one said it keeps you cool in Summer though. LOL

My reasons too get rid.

1. I want to fit a V-mount and it would be easyer if the Air con rad was\'nt there.
2. Its a pain in the rear getting it converted to the newer gas then get it Refilled.
3. Not Bothered about the resale Value becouse i can\'t see me ever selling it :)
4. Not usaly to Bothered about it keeping me cool in summer as i like driving with the windows down anyway.

So what do you think?? is it worth Keeping or Bin it?

I have plans to do some track days in it so the extra Air flow would help......

from what you have said i would bin it.   Personally i would like to keep it if was feasable.  FD\'s get very hot if you sit in traffic or on hot days.  You probably dont have a sun roof either and if you make it go fast you will have a loud exhaust and shutting the windows is a nice respite from the noise.....

If you bin it, just undo the couplings on the engine side of the bulk head and remove the rad and condenser.  You dont need to remove the dash and the PFC wont care.   If you have stock fans, you can still switch them on by switching the aircon switch.

Personally wouldn\'t get rid because in the full heat of summer in a traffic jam even windows down doesn\'t help much and FD\'s get so hot inside as the heat comes back from the engine.

Interesting point is, at speed, does the aerodynamic drag of windows down outweigh the extra weight of the aircon + the powersap of the aircon????? Don\'t actually know the answer mind!!!!!

I do like the idea it can be removed in such a way it could be refitted fairly easly, No dash messing about .

I do understand what you mean about the sat in Trafic on a summers day, This is the only real reasom i\'m even thinking about it, i know it\'ll come round to next summer and i\'ll be sat in traffic thinking "WHY ON EARTH DID I TAKE THE AIR CON OFF!!!!!!" I can just see it happening.

Learnt the answer to this at the Eden Project in Cornwall last year (well worth it if you\'re feeling a bit beardy tree hugger-esque)... At cruise Air-Con is significantly more efficient than having the windows open, to around the 10% mark depending on the car etc...

Well, that\'s what they said, so don\'t hold me to it ;)

^^^^^Wow, even more justification for keeping the aircon..cheers for that..:cheers !!!! In summer I tend to drive with aircon on and sunroof open..:Hammer

I\'m thinking more along the lines of getting air through the Rad and Intercooler.

Basicly would the Pro\'s of Having cool air in summer out weigh the Cons of air for say the rad having to go through the Air con rad maybe causeing extra Engine heat in the Summer?

Living in Scotland it\'s of no use to me ;), I\'m hoping to junk the air-con and give a little more room in the bay and save a bit on weight. If it helps air flow, so much the better

LOL, I atualy did\'nt like driving my Vert on hot days with the roof down, the seats where unbelivably hot for example if you went in a shop and got back in the car after a few minutes and i kept getting sun burn on the neck so i ended up only droping the roof when it was a nice day rather then a hot day. One of the reasons i have an FD now :)
