I\'d do exactly the same as I have done.
Wait for a clean unmolested car with a fresh rebuild.
Depends what your aim is, to own a mint stock example or a mild/ highly modified car. A low miler standard car will mean a long interval before a rebuild but if you want to modify it then it means shelling out quite a bit to get to a certain level.
One\'s which are modded mean you get the benefit of someone elses hard earned and labour for the same money, but also means that something could go bang if not taken care of properly. And without a warranty it could be expensive.
There are a number of very good modded and cared for examples for sale here, just go to the Cars For Sale section.
Personally, I bought from Newera 8 weeks ago and modded it. I pick it up this weekend. I wanted a very low mileage example that I could personalise to my own tastes, that was my preference. However I have bought other modded motors before on the strength of forum chat and history and had no problems.
Oh, a few of us from Scotland are having a meet in Dunfermline on Oct 15th if you fancy popping along :)
Devil, i have sent PM to hotmail
You have mail :)

AYMEN TO THAT. CUSTOMISED CAR - CLUES IN THE WORD
If I had my time again I would definitely NOT buy the first one I saw.
I also would not let my Dad drive it and break it.
If i had to go again, I would have bought a Running FD with some goodies that had done abou 50-60k Then rebuilt it myself as soon as i got it.
But how i did buy my two last FD\'s was with blown motors and none runners. The only thing i can say about doing it this way if you have never Driven an FD the job will Drag out, I was Not looking forward to refitting the rats nest the first time and that alone added two months too the Job ;) If you decided you want to rebuild one your self buy one thats Running so you get the BUG!!!
If you don\'t want to Rebuild the engine i sugest you do as already sugested, Buy a car that Motor has been rebuilt by some one good (note the Engine Builders at the top of the Page) with Recipts and good service history whilst in the country, becouse its not about the engine being unreliable its how its treated, its been known for Fd engines too do 100k on its first engine but its also been known for them to do 30k, they need to be looked after and treated with respect.
If there is no recipts ring the Engine builder they claim built it, they 99% of the time Keep records and will tell you if what there telling you is Correct.
Ok enough babbling on.

Dad\'s are great like that, Mine decided to take a Gauge pod of my Dash and put a big Rip in the Covering so i need to replace the Hole dash at some point soon. :reallymad
If I done it all again (wish I could now, such a buyers market!) I think I would go down the route of buying one as cheap as possible, with a good base (no rust or twists, etc), maybe a blown engine in need of rebuild, then mod the lot!
Rebuild straight away, but of porting etc, choose a nice turbo. Pick a good bodykit, widebody would be good, give the car a full re-spray while the engines out. Then when its all back together and bodywork and engine are suitably fettled I go for suspension and brakes, nice set of coilovers, big brake kit, diff braces, engine damper, strut bars, diff mounts, the works :)
Then it would just be a case of picking a set of nice wheels and away we go :)
Doing it this way I would probably spend as much as I have done so far but end up with a completely sorted car rather then the \'getting there\' (at least in my eyes) car I have now.
But as they say hindsight is a wonderful thing.
Good luck which ever you choose ;)
Not that im complaining about the old gal of course, has served me well over last couple of years with no major probs and huge amount of enjoyment, just thinking if I done it all again, that way would get most bang for your buck.
Buying an already well sorted motor though with a recent rebuild will save you heaps of cash, but I do like the idea of picking all the mods yourself, half the fun!
i paid a bit too much for a car with only 28k on the engine and chassis. it did however have a very long list of bits and pieces that would have cost thousands to add myself. i reckon it saved money in the long run.
Id...Get a car without an overheating problem :p
On a serious note, do what most people have done...take your time & dont rush into it :)
If I knew big power was my goal at the beginning I would have bought a cheapy at 2-4K with a blown engine straight body and nice wheels
I wouldnt change a thing.
I fell in love with the look of the car as soon as I saw it, and couldnt believe the performance. The car was properly looked after car, with well thought out mods. Had the car checked over by a pro to make sure that it wasnt a lemon.
There is always that chance that luck will step in and lay waste to the most well thought out plans. But as long as you buy the right one for the right reasons, there will be no regrets.
folks,
thanks for all the info, i bought the following car from Devil
to good an opportunity.

Just for the record I am with Blitzboy, I would be down at the docks and pick up a dog, blown engine the lot for a cheap as I could get it 2k maxxxx. As long as the body was not bent.
Then go the way I have gone RE engine.:cool
