Title: MOT help!!
Post by: Martin on November 24, 2003, 03:55:21 PM
Just failed on MOT on a newly imported 92 RX... emissions failed!! I\'m in Brum and the cars in London at the mo.. I dunno what to do as I\'m supposed to collect it tomorrow!!

I read somewhere that if its older than 10yr the car doesn\'t have to pass the emissions? is this true? and if so why didnt the MOT guys know about this??

I\'m desperate!:(

I would call Dave of Thames Valley MOTs. He drives an FD, and has done a whole of testing on how to make it pass.

Can you get him to do the test?

I think >10 yrs means it does not have to have a cat. It will still have to pass some sort of test, though.

Martin,

My 92, didn\'t have an emissions test as part of its MOT ! And as far as I\'m aware they shouldn\'t need one at that age, as they are pre-cat legislation.

Hope you get it sorted......you could always try another garage !

You DO need an emissions test.  It does not need the tougher Cat type emissions test.

I think you were lucky BenF, to the best of my knowledge, all cars are subject to an emissions test of some sort.  If your car was first used on or after 1/8/92 it must undergo an advanced emission test, if it is older than that it must meet certain CO and HC emission limits (dependant on age).

My \'92 twin turbo falls into the latter category and I have had a nightmare this last two years getting it through the MOT.  If I were you I\'d get your car tested there every year!

To clear up another point, I don\'t think cars after \'92 HAVE to have a CAT, even if it had one fitted at manufacture, as there is no specific requirement for this, it just makes it unlikely that the car will pass the more advanced so-called \'CAT\' test (though not impossible I imagine if you know how to tune things specifically for the test).

Not that this is any help to Martin, unless he can get MOT\'d at the same place as BenF!

Good luck.

To Clarify, after a good 30 minutes or so discussion with Vehicle Inspectorate the other month. All rx-7s before August 95 have a non cat test. Anyone that has a cat test for an mot on there rex is having the wronmg test. I really don\'t have time to explain why but trust me it\'s so.
