Title: Paths to more power - 400hp
Post by: Devil\'s Refugee on September 26, 2006, 08:21:32 AM
Ok, I\'ve gone through the basics in setting the car up just now with ;

Apexi PFC
Uprated fuel pump and secondary injectors
HKS RS induction
HKS DP, KnightSport free flow cat, HKS backbox
Uprated Greddy 3-row SMIC
Exedy clutch

Running with stock twins, what other mods would I need to get past 300hp and on the way to 400 without the expense of going single tub. Don\'t really want to get a rebuild with a street port at this point either, as the car has only done 23k miles so it would be a wasted expense.

What boost are you running them on?, maybe a FMIC would have been better?

Im no expert but would like to know how people approach this?  Are you tuning it yourself?  I guess the main things people look at would be the fuel system, + cooling system, so if your maxing out the capacity of your intercooler and fuel system on the current boost level, maybe improving these items (uprating your primary injectors, and a FMIC) would be a avenue to explore?

I\'ll be buying a V-mount IC and uprated rad later next year, wouldn\'t go FM due to restricting the airflow to the rad. The car is being mapped at RE:Worx on Thursday so will have figures hopefully later this week as she stands just now.

Don\'t think the fuelling will be maxed out with what I have, running 850cc secondaries and a 280ltr/ph pump. Boost levels I would hope RE:Worx would keep to a safe level with the Profec II.

Would an uprated throttle body give any gains ?

On a stock engine with stock turbos any more than 300atw is likely to be a bad move, the only way you will see more power is by upping the boost above 1bar and that produces tons more heat thus shortening the life of the engine / turbos. Best advice - go buy yourself a second engine and build that up to the spec that will give you the kind of power you are looking for, then you can add on the \'bolt on\' bits to take you up to the heady 400+ club:mmmm
You then can sell on you \'low milage\' stock engine or keep it for when you wish to sell the car on.

Re:worx recommended to me that 330atw was pretty much the limit without thrashing your turbos.  So Johns advice is good, if your going V-Mount next year maybe thats also your chance to build a higher spec engine?

Im running 240 atw on my twins, im going to fit a FMIC and uprate the fuel system, but im not going to push them that far, next year its a small/medium sized single for me. :)

Then I have to get a uprated auto gearbox :) happy days.

I was running 319 at the hubs before at .8 bar of boost.

Street ported engine, straight through exhaust, big downpipe, uprated I/C & Rad, apexi induction and a map from WGT.

That was on stock injectors which were getting tight at around 88% duty

Think the point was \'on a stock engine\' we all know what porting does and 319hubs is about 300ish at the wheel.

Greddy SMIC 3 row is a good cooler for stock twins, some people run these with singles. I think if you run WI as well then you will not need to go FMIC root.
You will probably get 320atw which is close to 400 at the fly

Dont really understand how water injection works, Im guessing its used to cool the intake air along with the intercooler?  So it will improve the performance of the intercooler?

The FMIC I am installing is the Greddy Type-M which is not rated for much above small/medium single, but if I wanted could I add water injection to improve this  instead of upgrading my intercooler?

Cheers, James

WI will lower intake temps plus more importantly lower combustion temps so will lower knock levels and you can run higher boost safely. So people actually take intercoolers out and run WI exclusively. So yeah no need to uprgrade your intercooler, the only only time you will need upgrade the cooler if you a re running a big single at high boost whereby it will outflow your current FMIC and the FMIC being your restriction

When you say "outflow", do you mean push too much air thorugh it that it can not cool it quick enough? Or its restricting flow?

Can you recommend a good kit/distributor, are they difficult to install DIY?  Will the ECU require mapping after?

Restricting flow, it cant handle the volume air that a big single wants to push through it.

Coolingmist or Aquamist systems are good, Most people can DIY them, no need for a remap as you can use it for a good safety margin, but a remap would make the best use of it

Cool, got the plastic out and ordered one from cooling mist :)

Time to phone the insurance company now and stick it on the mods

Do you need to use distilled water or can council juice do the job ?

Rain water is good, tap water is OK just make sure you have some form of filter even better is a methonal mix:cool
