Title: 12a N/A LPG ??
Post by: shaunwil on September 23, 2006, 06:02:37 PM
Im seriously thinking of buying the 1st gen Alan is looking at selling and will be wanting to convert it to LPG and use as a daily driver. Im been trawling the web trying to find some info but am coming up a little blank.

I\'ve found this : http://autospeed.drive.com.au/cms/article.html?&A=0406 and it shows that it can be done (even grinder may be interested in it) which has a turbo\'d 13b in a 1st gen running solely on gas.

I\'ve found http://www.gasresearch.com.au/ where the bits for that car came from and i\'ve sent an email off to them asking about the 12a

Has anybody else ever thought about doing it to a 1st gen N/A ?

Cheers

Shaun

Hi Shaun,

Don\'t know if you\'ve seen this on e-bay:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/1989-MAZDA-RX7-2-RED-Rotary-Wankel_W0QQitemZ110034775326QQihZ001QQcategoryZ18211QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

They\'re pretty local and might be able to give advice, although I\'d assume it would be an injection conversion.

the thaught of LPG and rotaries has never filled me with great confidence....

Much like a two stroke a small proportion of the lubrication of the seals comes from the fuel itself, and due to the combustion chamber design, cold quench characteristics and firing of the rotary they need a LOT of fuel to run....

This being the case, take away the lubricating fuel and you are inevitably going to encounter problems.....maybe just up the oil injector sizes????

Ive seen reciprocating engines fail after 3 years use on LPG when the valves receed too far into the head.....Just be carefull is all im saying!

The article in autospeed was a very interesting read, they had been using ot for years and had got 160k km so it must make alot of sense. They run it purely on lpg.

Im going to do some serious digging !!!!!

Went to look at the car today (200 mile round trip) an it is a very solid car that needs a few minor jobs to it to make it a daily driver.

I\'ve done a bit of digging and i think im going to go for a gas research carb and B2 converter. Not sure if I\'ll have to get them imported. Plus i\'ll get pip at WGT to tune the car if it all comes to fruition.

I can remove all the emissions stuff off the car too so i should be able to put a quieter exhaust on it (wanted to be a daily driver).

The dryness of lpg is quite a heated topic on ausrotary ! Anyway if i blow the engine up it won\'t be silly cost to replace or rebuild (with porting)

^^^^^ ha ha ha, where do you get these pictures Era? That must be one of those Holy Bongs, :rollin

A 12a running twin SU carbs is supposed to be quite efficient!!!.... Maybe worth considering in the quest for more MPGs... Cheap too. You have to consider the cost of an LPG conversion, cant imagine its gonna be cheap, are you really going to pay of the cost of the conversion and as Era said, it won\'t run the same. Interesting project though, maybe you are onto something.

The plan at the minute is to try and get it running completely on gas and get about 20mpg on normal day to day running. Looking on ausrotary it is pretty possible, hell they do it to turbo\'d cars.

I drove a 1st gen yesturday and its absolutely nothing like a diesel, my pug is soooooo guttless !

Im looking more for info than banter, but the picture is funny !

Era,  he will only get 20mpg but LPG is about 45 pence per gallon, which works about 40 mpg.

In my 4.4 L V8 bmw, i get 250 miles to £25.

My daily is on LPG and you cant tell the difference between lpg and petrol,  it sounds and runs the same and is identical to drive.

Shaun,

You might be better off looking on ebay for an old style second hand kit with a tank the right shape for you, with an old style kit you can keep you stock carb, and although the tuning will be a little more crude,  you can always flick it over to petrol for a blat.

As for oil,  the 12a have a mehanical oil injection so you could just adjust the control arm to inject more oil lower in the revs

LPG can give MORE power... ya just gotta know what to do with it ;)

still i wouldnt trust it on a rotor. Due to the easier mixing of gases (than liquid and gas) the mix in the combustion chamber is likely to be much more consistent.......and burning just as fierce around the apex seals as it would be in the centre of the combustion chamber for instance....

I cant help but think that this might really effect longevity of the seals....

From what i\'ve seen on ausrotary it is a very good option and I think people are just scared of using it. Hell how much does a 12a cost to replace ? Im not looking at bunging a huge turbo on and probably will only make stock power but it will let me play with one as a daily runner.

If I get it done i\'ll do a full write up.

One of the interesting things someone said on ausrotary was that you petrol isn\'t a fluid, it is supposed to attomised so it is effectively a gas anyway. The lpg is more consistant in its dispertion.

If you think about it there is less cr*p in lpg that is effecting the seals because it burns much cleaner.

Shaun
Title: 12a N/A LPG ??
Post by: dubber91 on September 26, 2006, 11:29:50 AM
haha i wouldnt agree with that....

I would say gaseoline is CLEANER, LPG is PURER. Plus if you up the oil metering ill garuntee your \'cleaner\' car wont be cleaner at all ;)

As for gasoline being a \'gas\' in the combustion chamber, that is a term i would use VERY loosely...... It is a mist. If you run through fog you get wet dont you......is it entirely gas then? NO.

Ideal petrol combustion is with smallest droplets suspended in air.....This can be done with relatively low injection pressures, say around 3-4 bar. Spray pattern has more of an effect on droplet size than injection pressures. Beyond this there is no advantage to having serious injection pressures as no better burn is achieved. Were not talking about gases here we are talking about VAPOURS.......vapours condense and have totally different properties. Look in the SI thermodynamics tables for dry Air at low pressures and vapour cycles ;)

Im not saying i wouldnt do it....just be wary. If you advance the ignition timing you should see appreciable HP too.

Good luck!

Steve

It is an interesting subject and will be very interesting project. The more i think about it the more i want to get it done. I\'ve been quoted 460quid for a single carb system kit off a company that sells alot of kits on ebay. I still need to send them some pictures of the engine bay and carb but that seems very reasonable. It\'ll pay itself back within 12 months on fuel cost.

I think if i was talking forced induction as well then i\'d be making it a very big project but on a stock na engine there is less stress in it anyway and i\'ll want to run purely on lpg without a petrol tank etc !

Definately interesting.

it\'s not actually anything new, there\'s an fc running about in essex owned by my friend bob. it\'s been running on lpg for years, was done by rotechnics i think. i have all the gear to convert one of my ro80\'s, bought from a dutch guy who\'s also been running ro80\'s on lpg for years. i say go for it, i found sites a while back when i was reading up on it that were claiming more power on turbocharged mazdas when running on lpg.

Hey mate,

LPG is great on rotaries, as you know, I\'m selling that Gas Research setup, but I\'m selling it to go to an lpg injection setup.  You can make more power from lpg, especially in a forced induction environment than petrol as its octane level is higher, allowing leaner mixtures, more timing, and/or more boost.  The main problem with lpg is that it doesn\'t have the cooling properties that petrol does so you have to make sure your cooling system is up to scratch, but that is not normally a major issue.  Secondly, contrary to what is on here, you actually inject less oil into the chamber when running lpg, as the dry gaseous fuel does not wash it away as much as petrol does.  Also note that as lpg doesn\'t have the cooling properties of petrol, running the car rich doesn\'t help keep it cool, it can actually make it run hotter.

My car should have comfortably at least 250rwkw @ around 15psi on our Aussie low reading dynos.  Lpg is good for this power and more, however over here once you go above about 500 flywheel hp you have to go to twin tanks as the excess flow valves fitted to the tanks stop them flowing enough gas.  Not sure if this is just an Australia only thing though.

Lpg is the answer I believe as a street fuel.  Cheaper and makes more power safer.  Wheres the lose?  The only negative is finding someone sufficiently experienced to tune a high powered lpg rotary (which fortunately I have covered).

I think it\'s a fantastic idea. I was thinking of running it in a few years when I do my final bid for freedom and drive round europe to avoid settling down with the misses! I\'ve always liked the idea of running LPG and N2O as a auxillary fuel on boost. Just the EGT to worry about!

Should make a nice clean setup if they fit to the standard intake manifold.

Hey mate, the gas research stuff is really good, especially for forced induction, but yeh, could look a little strange in an n/a engine bay I suppose.  They are a much better design if you want some boost later though, as traditional carbs are quite restrictive.  It really depends on what you\'re after.

I\'ve finally ordered a open loop system for the 7. Im going to start with a simple system and then build up towards a straight gas setup because this is my daily driver and can\'t risk pulling the car off the road !

There was some interesting threads on rx7 club and the carb setups are alot harder to setup in a sort space of time.

I\'ve finally got the kit through from tinley tech. They seem extremely helpful and not too expensive for a full kit. I\'ve got some issues with the mixer and i\'ve had to send my spare air filter can off to them so that they can work out what will work best.

I\'ve got a 47l toridional tank, all the gas lines, the filler nozzle, the electrics, the fuel cutoff solinoid, the gas cutoff solinoid, the Vapouriser, all the coolant and lower pressure gas lines. Blimey there is alot of stuff to fit !

I think im going to have to drop the petrol tank to install the gas tank and fittings. The spare tyre well is over the back of the fuel tank. Looking at the workshop manual it doesn\'t look too hard. Going to try and do it over a weekend. I have a 8mm copper line to plumb in for the filler and a 6mm Copper line to plumb in for the main feed.

The vapouriser is huge. Its much bigger than the stuff i\'ve seen on ausrotary. I should be have more than enough capacity for now and the future (if a turbo project arises).

So far the Tank float has been installed in the tank and the gauge mounted to the assembly. Not much done really, more reading and planning !

Hi Shaun,

How are you getting on with this? I\'ve been reading around and it does seem like quite a good idea, you can get more power for less money... Seems good to me :D

I\'d be interested to hear your progress!

Also, does anyone know where you can get injection based kits rather than carbs?
Title: 12a N/A LPG ??

I haven\'t got much further. I had to send my mixer back to tinley with my spare can and they remanufactured one to fit for free :D (i just paid postage). I need to start asap and will ideally be sorting some bits out this weekend. Im looking at getting the vapouriser and mixer fitted next.

I think the best place to look about lpg is still ausrotary. I don\'t think anybody has converted an fd. The best way with that is if one day they actually make something that replaces the injectors direct and is controlled like the injectors. Don\'t know if that exists yet !

After the issue with the mixer and now some finer weather i\'e finally started to get some work actually done. I\'ve routed the coolant line so that the pipe running to the oil cooler firsts goes to the Vapouriser and then through the cooler, this only adds an extra coolant line for tidyness. (Era look away now)

Then I\'ve plumbed in the gas line solinoid to the vapouriser.

Then i cutout a hole for the low pressure line in my spare filter can (off engine i bought off kev) and siliconed the mixer and the line into the filter, cut the line to length and then installed the filter.

I think im going to need a second fuel line filter because i didn\'t realise that there are 2 main fuel lines !

Feels like I\'ve got a bit done, still abit more to do in the engine bay and then on to the boot, electronics and filler !

Surpisingly it doesn\'t look all that cluttered with the vapouriser and mixer installed in the engine bay !

Era I did say look away ! If the weather is like this next weekend (dry but cold) Im hopefully going to drop the petrol tank and install the LPG tank in the place of the spare wheel.

When the kit comes you think OMG theres so much to fit but its more a case of taking my time and doing things methodically.

I need another petrol solinoid because I didn\'t realise it was 2 main feeds, but other than that all i\'ll need is to get it inspected, have it rough tuned by the inspector then book it in to pips :D

Well after the drive to work this morning I think i have a major problem with this setup. When i rev the car the engine bogs down at 4k and feels like i\'ve hit the limiter. I think its just not getting enough air into the carb and making it run way too rich. It looks like i may need to make the setup straight gas from the beginning. I have a full engine and aux as spares through buying an engine off kev so will have a look at fitting a PIR gas carb to the standard Inlet manifold.

Need to investigate the oil-metering too now that i may have to remove the stock carb ! Be interesting to see if i could bolt a LPG carb on top ????

Certainly does, that\'s what I\'m going to be running.  However you need a few injectors as power levels climb because currently they can only support around 80hp per injector (I\'ll be running 6 to start with).  A company over here in WA has been developing an aftermarket computer to run these, and this is the setup I\'ll be running, with the computer controlling spark as well.  The company is \'profire\' but there system still isn\'t available on a large scale, still finishing development on it.  They weren\'t overly keen to send me a setup across the country, so don\'t know whether they\'d be ready to send one overseas yet.  You may find that there\'s a similar setup available over there anyway.

The other option that gets talked about is liquid lpg injection, not sure whether that\'s really available yet though, certainly it isn\'t in Australia due to some legal battle that\'s going on.

Don\'t know if that helps.  Hopefully there\'s something of worth there.

Right, Update on the never-ending project ! I\'ve sent the vapouriser back to tinley and they have part-ex\'d it on an Impco vapouriser and 300a (350cfm) Carb.

I\'ve rebuilt the spare engine i got off kev without all its innards to use a a dummy engine to work out my carb position and my oil line setup.

Read an interesting thread on ausrotary where the guy had used a bike brake cable to control the oil line throttle and had it working the same as the stock setup. Just need to make some brackets to achieve this !

Does anybody know where i can get jets to plumb the oil lines into the block under the carb ? I think this is done when a different petrol carb is used ??

I need to get some plates cut out to fit the tank in the boot too.

Im seriously thinking of getting as much done myself in the boot and the engine bay. Not installing the filler or the carb, then take it to a local installer and get them to finish off the setup, removing the petrol tank and fitting the gas fill nozzle in the standard filling position. Then get them to do a rough setup on straight gas and then take it to wgt and have it tuned properly.

The plan is slowly taking shape !

Shaun

This setup should be good for a turbo setup at a later date too :D

Update on the never ending LPG project.

I have had some clearance issue with the tank in the boot. More things in my head than what actually is possible.

I went to a local LPG installers to have a chat about them finishing off the project with all the stuff I can\'t do. They put my mind to rest and Im going to do as much as possible and they will finish it off. Im aiming to install everything and get them to inspect and tune the setup.

I\'ve made an adapter for the Impco 300a so that it will sit on top of the nikki and use the thottle control and oiling from the original nikki carb.

With the weather better and some more parts designed and lasered out I\'ve installed the Vapouriser into position and plumbed it into the coolant system.

I\'ve still to get somebody else to weld the adapter up (made out of 1/4in aluminium, cut by hand). I\'ve done a trial fit of the carb to get hose lengths sorted and to check that the bonnet closes with the carb in place, which it does :D. I still need to install some pickups for the vaclines that are plumbed into the original filter.

Some pics:

Im hoping to get the tank installed in the boot next weekend. Gives me 4 days to play then :D I\'m still not sure on what to do with the filler but will have a proper look during the week.

The car should be dual-fuel too so hopefully will be able to run on petrol until i get the car tuned and checked properly.

The sooner this is done the better :D

ok, just tell me when you come, don\'t usually go in the 1st gen !

Sooner I get it done the better ! Save me about 25 quid a week in fuel costs !

Then I\'ll investigate the single turbo option on the 12a :D

Well I\'ve had some seriously busy 2 days :2Confused

I\'ve removed the fuel tank.
Then cut the boot out.
Drilled the fixing hole positions for my fill-in plate.
Silicon and bolted it all together.
Installed the donut tank into position.
Plumbed the main feed line from the tank to the engine (6mm copper)
Run the level indicator and tank solenoid in to car
Cut a 70mm hole in the body panel next to the filler :2eek
Installed the filler in to position in the body panel.
Installed the Filler pipe between the Filler and the LPG Tank (8mm copper)
Reinstalled the petrol tank into position (needed longer bolts)

Then done a oil change and oil filter that was due too !

Still to install the petrol solenoid, Wire up the electronics & finish off the carb adapter (Vac line placement and a bit of filing).

Then its off to be inspected and certified then off to pips for tuning :D

Im off to collapse into a heap with possibly a pint !

sounds good ... just need some photos :) Might want to add some bracing back in after cutting the boot floor out as I seem to recall that the boot floor/wheel well provides quite a bit of strength and stiffness to the chassis at the back, how much have you cut out?

Sounds very interesting though!

I\'ve only cut the bolt down point in the car, most of the boot has stayed intack.

Only a little bit of the boot really !

The main outer ring of the wheel well is still in the car, All i\'ve removed is the dimple in the middle. Tank is similar size to spare tyre so didn\'t need to remove a alot. The standard boot carpet looks the same with the tank installed.

Been another busy day !!!

I\'ve filed the adapter to shape,
Install the adapter to the top of the nikki
Jimmy rigged the vac lines (not sure what to do with them at the minute, car runs on petrol and idles ok so should be ok)
Installed the Carb and installed the low pressure gas line
Installed the petrol solenoid control in main fuel line
Wired the controller into car (struggled to find an ignition live)

All I need now is to get it all checked over by a local firm and certified, then book it into pips.

I\'ll post some images once I know its all ok !

Oh and I\'ve just ordered an alternator relocation kit for the fb from pineapple racing to increase the coverage of the belt on the waterpump without the airpump :D

Once Im happy with the gas (eventually) I\'ll end up removing the whole of the petrol system. Will investigate whats needed to get rid of as much of the emissions cr*p off the engine and removal all the redundant bits on the carb !

Er, on the picture front I forgot to take the pictures. I\'ll take some tomorrow and post them up. I\'m still not sure the setup is right, the tank is showing 3/4 full when I haven\'t put anything in it ! So the check up is the next part !

The tank fitting is by far the hardest bit of the process and cutting body panels to fit the filler is also scary. Access next to the petrol cap is quite good but still very fiddly even with the petrol tank out. Then its getting the tank back in the car !

The alternator relocation is this :

Works out at about 58 quid for the bracket and the belt with economy airmail. Shame they don\'t make one for the FD !

Ive driven a lpg that used a motec unit to squirt petrol in, it was also turbo charged, thing flew, the petrol was used like NOS it spool the turbo.

The more I think about it the more the questions are to be asked why nobody does the FD at all.

Ok if fueling is an issue why can\'t we just use the PFC to control a single bank of LPG injectors. Then when on boost or say at 85% of the LPG injectors duty have a secondary petrol system like the auxiliary kits already used on bigger turbo setups ?

Is there any serious issues with mixing both petrol and gas ??

Would mean that off boost and tootling would be done on cheaper fuel then when the right foot gets a bit happy then the supply is supplemented by petrol ?

Would this type of setup be easier with a motec / haltec type setup in the FD ??

Right, cars booked in for an inspection and first filling tomorrow. I\'ve ordered a new dizzy cap and arm (not looking very good) and the car is booked into WGT the saturday after to be tuned :D

Took my plugs out and the Top plugs where full of carbon and the bottoms where white/brown. Brushed them both clean and reinstalled them. Not sure what this indicates ! Wish my FD plugs where as easy to get to :D

Not really sure, pulled the plugs out and the top plugs where completely black. Got a dizzy cap on order to see if that helps. Should have it tomorrow.

Its very intermittent, its as much like naff fuel !

No i haven\'t ! The gas is giving some of the same results so i think something else is the problem. Only getting dizzy cap on tuesday now with a fresh rotor arm so will take it from there.

I need to do some resistance testes on my coils and wires to see if something else has gone south.

The kit was tested this morning. I have a leak in the filler pipe and i\'ve forgot to install a cover on the filler nozzle so some work still to do. The car now has  LPG in the tank (20l for £8.45) and i\'ve done about 15 miles on a basic setup. Car revs to the red line and backfires between gears :D

Going to give pip a ring on monday and ask him how long it would take to remove all the emissions cr*p off my engine before its tuned. The vacuum on a rotary isn\'t great and the car is struggling at idle, hopefully simplifying the vacuum system will help the tick over.

The car showed high hydrocarbons on tickover but this improved alot when the car was reved to be a slight minus figure !! Car seemed to run a bit hot but i think the ignition isn\'t helping and the setup is a bit richer ! I\'ll have to leave it to pip to see what he can do !

I\'ll wait until the cars completely cold, see if it starts on gas and if it does the fuel tank will being taken out and staying out :D

It doesn\'t feel any different to when you drove it :D

Almost popped in on the way back, went past the end of your road, but was off home for some dinner :D

I know i need to fix the ignition system this week and hopefully pip will do his wonders :D

Who knows, another year and i might even consider doing the FD !

hummmm i would be worried about it going wrong to be honest

the FB - you can prob get an engine cheap enough - if you kill the FD - thats a lot of money down the pan

on the flip side - the saving acheived using LPG would pay for a rebuild no doubt ??

But we all harper on about fuel costs and the ron of petrol. LPG is 107-110 ron and doesn\'t detonate like petrol so there are alot of advantages.

If you could have the gas do the same work as the stock fuel setup then have additional petrol injectors for greater fueling then job done. LPG for tootling motorway off boost driving and then add petrol on top for boost like we already do with additional injectors and controllers then the swap isn\'t hugely more intense than adding a 3rd set of injectors on petrol.

Well back on topic. I\'ve been trying to sort out the filler pipe and needed to drop the tank to get decent access. In the short time I had tonight I\'ve dropped the tank, re-hooked up the filler with correct cover to aid outside venting if any leaks occur.

I\'ve bunged up the petrol lines and disconnected the fuel pump so no more petrol in the car. Popped out to local garage and added some more gas to tank, 20lt for £8.45 :D

I\'ve got a new dizzy cap, dizzy rotor and 2 new coils coming in the week because they usually say that the gas shows up a bad ignition and I\'d like to have as few problems for pip as possible !

Cheers, its not a cheap conversion, worked out about £1100 in total without tuning. But Im using almost £45 in petrol a week in the 1st gen. It should pay itself back within 12 months of driving and i\'ll always have the kit to transplant into another car.

You can probably get all the bits cheaper and some of my costs are due to me having to swap things part way through.

The next main thing I want to do is to wire the dash fuel gauge upto the tank sender and hide the controller away. There\'s no point of it then, i won\'t be swapping it back to petrol running !

Im at pips late morning tomorrow and I really don\'t know what kind of bhp/torque I should expect. is 100bhp ATW too much ??

Will post the graphs tomorrow.

At the minute the setup i have only works with a 1st gen or carbed rotary, not the fuel injected ones.

good luck at pips, thats not bad considering some prices most are atleast 2k. i like the idea of gas and petrol for my nx project just need to sort out a garage to do it in when i\'ve finshed buying my house.whats the list of parts that you are using?
