Title: Well - That\'s torn it !!
Post by: strange_days_uk on September 22, 2006, 08:31:14 PM
Drove the REX today feeling pleased with the new power.

Stops at the lights, thinks "hmm smells like burning oil ??"

Looks out the window, "oh s**t, plumes of smoke out the exhaust"

Turbo seal(s) blown me thinks.

Anyone recommend a good single turbo kit for an FD ??  (sob)

I have just spent time trawling through ebay.  There are lots of no brand kits, and some XS Power Ones.  Trouble is, if buying from the US how do you know if it will fit a rhd car or not ?

Also, are XS Power turbos any good ?

And I don\'t even know what turbo I want..  All I do know is I don\'t want to spend any more money !

I think the best thing to do is ask around the rx7 specialists and see what they got, then do a check on the units available and look at power figures, power bands etc until you find the right one for you ?

Big turbos give loads of horses but take an age to fire up, whereas smaller ones fire up early but dont have the big power band ???

The choice is yours ???

Not up to date and not equated for rotary engines but .............

Keen on mimimum lag, but want a turbo capable of 400 at wheels minimum

How does this look ??

Description

Very good condition T04E turbo, originally supplied by Turbo Dynamics in UK. This is a genuine Garrett turbo, not cheap rubbish. Was removed from FC3S RX7 (86-91) but will fit later RX7’s (FD3S 92on) or any vehicle with a T4 flange. Ideal for single turbo conversion on FD3S or as an upgrade on an FC.

AR is 60 on this turbo, there is no smoke and no shaft play. It has an integrated wastegate and will produce around 350 – 400 hp with very fast spool up. Great for road, track and drift use.

Pictured with FC3S manifold, not included.

Selling as going for a larger turbo better suited to our new half bridgeported engine.

Sensible offers considered.

This is a Hybrid turbo with a TO4e compressor and S5(FC) turbine.Does not have T4 flange. Will not produce 350-400 and will not suit a 13b-REW.
In a word...useless

Well why didn\'t you just say so then!  :D

 .
Also seems alot of folk tunning their cars recently and boasting big numbers from so and so, but then they end up kaking it  not too long after...

Depending on application, a T4 flange, T04 type turbo with tubular manifold and external wastegate. Medium sizes being HKS T04e, Mitsibushi TDO6,
GT35/40, Apexi RX6.

Simon
The \'Flange\' is the foot/base of the Turbo which meets the manifold(the part that attaches to the engine).
This Flange comes in various sizes, the size most used/common with the Rotary engine is the \'T4\', so you are looking for a Turbo with a T4 footprint.

 Hop that helps.

Cheers for the info, basically the size and shape of the aperture where the manifold bolts onto the turbo.

Might be worth having a word with REworx they were doing a kit [that was sort of developed from my car] for a good price, I managed 462atw @ 1.15bar using it. hth
Problem with stock twins I am afraid, they produce to much heat when boosted further than stock and coupled with their age seals are likely to go:o

Cheers John,

Really wanna minimise cost, although I will definately not opt for a second rate turbo.  Quality is paramount!

Problem is from a vendor over here I am looking at a good f\'ing £2000 lets face it.

And that may be just for the basic bits.

I even wondered earlier if it would be better just to break the car :-((

What ever you buy Please do not buy this one as the Exhaust housing is far too small and will damage your engine because of its inability to scavenge hot gasses out of the chambers

Rotarys need an adequately  big bum on their single Turbo\'s than piston engines in comparison to the front hosing to ensure the above does not happen.

A few years ago running a little GT30, I lost an engine due to this as the hot gas had expanded the tip and it came in contact with an end plate and broke a piece of the end.

Hope this helps

Just get some good second hand twins or go to the single turbo forum on rx7club.com or nopistons.com and do lots and lots of reading.

I am going to get one of the following:

Mitsubishi TD06
T04S or R
GT35R

Just a case of finding one at the right price.  Charly on the forum is getting a kit through from Jap with his new car, hopefully it will be right for mine and I will get that.

I am certainly not gonna do anything silly and buy a naff/unsuitable turbo.

I am still learning and refuse to make any mistakes with this..

Time will tell, I will keep you all posted (no pun intended)

Defo go with a branded Turbo thats my advice
Garrett or Mitsi, HKS use Garrett as base and Trust use Mitsi as base.

The TD06\'s are known for having weak shafts. TO4 turbos are generally very strong. Quite honestly I would go for either GT35R for low down power, TO4Z good all round, not laggy and good top end or T51R for good top end power and the coolest damn sound a turbo could ever make.
