Title: What\'s all this churning and bubbling?
Post by: ianelvar on September 22, 2006, 03:43:47 PM
We call it, \'Mister Coffee\'. Care for some?

I knew that, I always have coffee when I watch radar....

Ok, enough of the spaceballs quotes... Sorry, I couldn\'t resist it.
Anyway, I\'ve run my car up to temp for the first time. I have a few problems:

When I turn it off there is an awful lot of churning and bubbling coming from the expansion tank and the AST. The AST actually shakes about.

There is blue black smoke coming from the left rear wheel arch, and out from the transmission tunnel past the oil filter. I can\'t find any leaks, she doesn\'t seem to lose any fluid, and I can\'t run her for long enough while she\'s on stands in the garage for it to appear before I die from the fumes. It seems to take about ten mins to appear.

She revs really quite high once she\'s warmed up. I\'m not sure how high, because the rev counter doesn\'t work, but I\'d estiamate about 2K - 2.5K

Please help:god

1st and foremost you most likely still have air trapped in the system:2eek Have you tried venting at the highest point [ie: heater pipes at the baulkhead?] Blue / black smoke from the transmission tunnel sounds like oil being burnt of, one assumes this is a re-build / 1st time of starting? If so best make sure there is on air in the cooling system, these cars are hard to \'burp\' hth:Hammer

Thanks John. Wish I could find the source of the burning. Don\'t want the car to catch alight!! I\'ll try venting it. It took me ages filling it, as I kept having to wait for the air to bubble out before putting any more coolant in. I\'ll try with the high hoses and see how it goes. Thanks for the pointers. :King

Well, if you\'re coolant\'s boiling then it stands to reason that the cooling system isn\'t pressurising properly. I\'d pop a new AST cap on there and see if that cures it. I put a 1.1 bar cap on mine and bingo, no more Mr Coffee impressions.
