Title: Flooded - Help
Post by: FLAT4MATT on September 21, 2006, 11:49:33 PM
Just to set the scene...

- Been away for two weeks - The FD has a silly little bike type battery due to large SMIC - Car is dead when i get back from holiday - Try to start with no joy, think i flooded it...

Spend best part of 3 nights trying to get the bugger started with no joy. I\'ve used all the methods I can find on the web like cranking it with the plugs out with the fuse out and the throttle floored. even tried new plugs this evening, spluttered a bit ran (rough as hell) for a second then cut out again.

Other thing is after I crank it for like 10secs on WOT when i stop and take my foot off there is a wierd buzzing from somewhere near the throttle body which continues til i fully turn off the ignition. NO IDEA what that is.

I need the car running NOW, will have to do without tomorrow (again) but NEED to have a running over the weekend especially as i need it for work to travel around all next week.

Any advice?

I\'ve already tried all this but i\'m limited by the battery life. I have the one on the car and another normal size battery to jump from as well as a portable jump start thing. But i still ended up running out of juice tonight with all the cranking...

I need help big time and i\'m getting VERY frustrated with it all :reallymad

Other thing is I\'m worried it could be something else causing the problems but i have run out of ideas. Is WGT the nearest place to Chorley (near bolton)

Would it be the fact it\'s a smaller battery than standard? Have you tried connecting the full size battery to the cars battery terminals and see if it runs then? Make sure the full size battery is fully charged.

Sounds like your ECU has wiped its memory settings due to your battery going dead. A similar situation happend with my R34 about 5months ago, battery went dead it would start but instead of idleing the RPM would just fall out and the engine would cut out. I stripped my whole block, removed and replaced every spark plug, stripped and cleaned my airflow meter etc you name it i checked up after about a month of tearing my hair out i got my mate round who is an electrical mechanic plug his little computer gizmo in, reset the ECUs guidelines and VROOM!

Do all your checks like your sparks, airflow, intake etc, if you need a quick fix get one of your mates to start her (i guess you have charged the battery or summit?) and temporarily set your throttle control valve slightly high so she idles about 2000 if not more just to keep her running if after you have check everything mechanical she is cutting out i wouldnt be surprised if its your ECU and the quick fix with the throttle control valve will be a temporary quick fix.

Although note my experience and knowledge with skylines is top notch, dont follow me word for word on this check with one of these guys who has experience with rotarys to see what ive done with my R34 and Supra can be done with ur rexs i cant see why not though. Let me know!

UPDATE

It\'s not the size of the battery as i\'ve been starting it with both batteries and i\'ve tried jumping it.

Don\'t think it\'s the ECU - The battery was not TOTALLY dead it was just under 10v. This was not enough to start the car which lead to the flooding.

Tow start, well that was an interesting one... Everytime i tried it was cutting the power to the dashboard lights etc. However that was at the end of the night so the battery was getting pretty tired at that point.

I dunno what to try next...

Anyone have any idea what the buzzing is from the throttle body?

I\'ve not made any changes to the car since i got it 6 months ago never had any problems starting it.

No but the battery was pretty low again at that point...

Going to go throught the full un-flood procedure again now, plugs out relay out etc as described here...

YES YES YES! I\'m once again blessed with the sound of a running rotary!!!

I\'ll tell you what made all the difference - the ATF oil in the plugs...

First time i tried to de flood it i didnt put the transmission oil in and it didnt want to know at all...

This time a spoon and a half down a funnel piece into both lower plug holes and it started on the first full rotation!

These are the instructions i used...

Starting a Flooded Car
Last updated: May 4, 1999
From Spencer Hutchings:

Symptoms: Car ran fine but suddenly won\'t start.
Plugs are wet with gasoline.

Steps

Pull the fuel pump relay.

Pull and clean the plugs or get a new set.

Turn the motor over with the plugs out and the gas peddle wide open for 10 to 15 seconds.

Wait 15 minutes and repeat step 3. Keep repeating these steps until no more gas sprays out of the spark plug holes.

Put 1 tablespoon of ATF into each rotor housing through the spark plug holes.

Put the clean plugs back in but do not hook up the plug wires.

Rotate the motor with the gas peddle wide open for 10 to 15 seconds.

Reinstall the fuel pump relay and plug wires.

Try to start it.
It will smoke a lot and probably run like crap. Don\'t let it die and after 20 to 30 seconds it should run on its own.

I had to do this several times in one evening a while back. Do it properly and patiently the first time and chances are your motor will fire right up.

I\'m over the bloody moon mate, t\'s 100% again and I\'m loving it!

Your situation sounds worse than what mine was, I did have a mistery buzzing (still dunno what that was) but that wasn\'t the problem... There\'s nothing worse than an electrical problem on a modern car. I could draw the entire wiring diagram for the VW on the back of a fag packet lol...

I might be able to pop round if you like, I\'ll probably be of no use whatsoever but it cant hurt can it?

doesnt really matter to be honest!!

you can wire 2 LED\'s up to the car and it will tell you engine error codes - so this is the next stage to try and get mine running !!

let me know please matey - can collect no probs :D

I had the same, ATF wouldn\'t even get mine going, in the end I put 10ml of 10/40 oil in each chamber, turned the engine over by hand and then tried her and she fired.

Was yours like mine and idled like crap for about 5/10 minutes and then settled down nicely? :)

Glad its ok :D

Yeah it idled rough for maybe a minute or so and smoked for about five... More likely the ATF than anything else... It idles better than it did before which is nice too...

Stu - Pretty sure I will have some at home I\'ll dig them out for you...

Just so others know, ATF is pretty much the same as power steering fluid.

Mine was rough for a good 10 minutes, but having not been started in 18 months I guess it was to be expected :)
