Hi to everyone, just wondering if anyone can answer what i hope for someone is a simple question.
What are the differences between 3rd gen UK RX7\'s and Japanese Imports?
&
Most probably obvious after answer the first question but ill ask, how can you tell the difference between a UK and JAP import Rex?
Thanks!
Not sure on all the differences mate, but the easiest way to spot the difference is the rear bumper. Uk models have a uk spec number plate recess while the Jap ones have a smaller one for the squarer style plate.
Not sure if this is right but i think UK models have a sunroof, but i could be worng there??
Adam
im sure engine sizes were different as well
imports were 2.6 and uk 2.0 but i could be well wrong
If anyone knows for sure i would be more than greatful to know.
See i werent sure about the number plate thing cause my R34 which is UK spec as i brought it from new in middlehurst the official dealership of skylines at the time has jap shape number plate at the back yet its UK.
uk speck have a pre cat, less power as standard, and the rear bumper has a long slot for the number plate with a fog light at each side.

All Fd\'s are 2.6. Jap or Uk models

ok so i forgot to correct that bit (apart from some imports manage to regester as 1.3) ;)

FD RX7\'s are 1308cc\'s everywhere except Britain, cos the department of transport decided to double the displacement to screw more tax out of us. Kind of like calling a 500cc two stroke a 1 litre. That\'s why all of the original UK registered cars have 2616cc on the log book.
my log book says 2000cc ?
yours is one in a million then! lol
Yeh mines registered 2616 and its a genuine uk spec yet the rear plate slot im 100% sure is kinda regtangular, i know the older 93-95 models had long liecence plate slots but did this tradition follow onto the later models 99 more specifically, cause mines never been registered abroad and was brought through TW WHITES here in the UK who where the offical REX importer back in 99, 00, 01, they brought a limited number over from japan and switched them to UK spec kinda like what nissan middlehurst did with the skylines for years.
I know mines a genuine 99 uk spec the rear end threw me off abit but all the documentation checks out, i guess the number plate slots were left when TW imported a number of them to convert as registered UK spec.
well you own a jap spec car that has had the Speedo changed and a fog light added by TW WHites end off.
my log book also says 2000 cc but its a 1.3 when the insurance company has to surply u with a like for like hire car whilst they fix yours.
Strange thing that!
I guess that works out pretty sweet then, since its registered as a UK spec model which is probably why the insurance is so dam cheap for me. Ill have to have a look into it but as far as all the paperwork shows it is like my R34 brought over by TW from new and converted to a registered uk spec, so technically as with my skyline it is an import but its been classified as a uk spec.
Just found some confirmation on the net via honest john and an old tw white link, TW Mazda did the exact same thing Nissan Middlehurst did with the skylines for years, buy and import a limited number from new and convert them and register them as uk spec. Thats cool with me its just that rear bumper started to through me off but its the same way my skyline is so its all good.
99 spec cars are sweet cars with the face lift front and uprated turbos.
Do you have rear seats or storage bins?
Rear seats if you can call them that LOL, but i literally just read as i was editing my post above that all the late 99, 00, 01 models imported and brought by TW white have rear seats. Its identical to what Middlehurst Nissan did with the R34 Skyline Range, think they brought like 180 from new, imported them over, converted them fully to UK spec and registered them as UK spec models.
Didnt mazda only make "TRUE" uk spec cars to be sold purely in the UK market back in like 93-95? I know Nissan never made "TRUE" uk Skylines but what Middlehurst did was officially done with Nissan, resulting in the creation of UK spec R34\'s - which i guess is why you dont get UK "model" R34 only official UK spec skylines.

They will have different badges with the Jap spec having the Efini badge and the UK spec a Mazda badge.
Pretty sure the UK 7\'s have this badge.. (http://www.sepiamutiny.com/sepia/MazdaLogo.jpg)
and japs have this one.. (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/a/a8/Efini_logo.gif/180px-Efini_logo.gif)

TRUE uk spec 93-95 have rear bins no rear seats, TRUE uk specs have two cats and less power 235BHP cruise control, sunroof, leather
what colour is your car?

awesome in blue
Thanks man most appreciated, the only thing i aint keen on is the exhaust but im trying to workout if i want to keep the duel exhaust look but with another system or go for a single system like an APEXi - currently looking at the APEXi GT SPEC exhaust system. What you reckon? opinions welcome!
Right i guess i gotto apologise for all the confusion i caused, been reading round the clock (really should have done more in depth reading before i brought her but hey she was such a beauty i didnt care, i just want to know for sure now) anyway i confused myself and everyone else i think LOL.
93-95 RX7s are the true UK "models" designed by mazda for the uk market we all know the differences sunroof, less power etc. The later 99-01 are UK "spec" they are technically imports BUT with a twist, a limited number where brought over into this country converted and registered as UK spec models before even setting a wheel on the road. Like i mentioned it the same thing Nissan did with the skyline and the same thing Toyota did with the supras although toyota went to town and added all sorts of UK spec extras.
Hope ive got all that right, so at least i know i was right originally when buying her, she is an official mazda UK spec not a UK model. But she isnt classified as an import because it was mazda who specifically brought them over to covert to a uk spec range sold through TW. Guess my skyline has an adopted sister now born from the same process.
Go racing beat dual or single tip. Lovely sound. My mate Shaq has the single tip its sounds like a jet fighter when on boost!
Ive currently got the Racing Beat duel tip exhaust system. I cant quite put my finger on why i dont like it, i just dont get the same tingling feeling that i do when i start my R34 or Supra. I get the same rush and feeling when im driving my REX pound for pound and inch per inch its probably the best out of the 3 when it comes to all-round performance.
I might get her up in the air and get right under her just to check the whole exhaust system and check the system inch by inch make sure its perfect and nothing wrong with it. Other than that its gonna be a case of looking around see what i like to the look of and what i like the sound of.
haha sounds like you crave power and noise lol
Welcome to the Emptying Wallet Club let the mods begin lol
Not fond of the single APexi exhaust, But I love the Dual Silenecer Apexi N1 system in terms of looks

This the bad boy your on about? (http://www.rx7store.net/photos/apexidualn1fd-2.jpg)
Ever heard one up and running?
Oh im already in the emptying my wallet club lol, i got my full membership into that club when i was 16 started saving ever penny i had working ****ty jobs so i could eventually afford a deposit (along with a big loan) in order to get my childhood dream car a Skyline so ended up with my R34 and havent looked back since, then i saw a Aerotop Supra mint condition extremely low mileage considering most supras have been driven once around the world and back for a bargin price snapped her up, then after alot of looking and even more waiting saw my REX fell in love with her the minute i saw her in the flesh and once i drove her knew i had to have her. Which brings me onto my curiousity question considering i got a mint condition and i mean not a scratch outside not a loose thread on the inside, under 20k on the clock, late 1999 model twin turbo of course what price would a REX like mine fetch? i may have paid slightly more than i should by a grand or 2 but i know shes worth it but im curious what you more experienced rex owners think regarding price!?!?
hmmm I would say your car is worth 10K
Henning on FDUK runs a dual Apexi, sounds nice not as nice as a single tip Racing beat though with a decat.
I would say you car is worth 12K at least
Cool thats pretty much what i paid for it right in the middle at 11k.
I can tell getting the perfect exhaust might take me sometime, was the image i posted in my last reply the exact exhaust you mentioned the duel N1?
If it starts taking to long i might just go down my local mod shop and check out the APEXi range along with the racing beat line and see what i like the look of the most, cross my fingers and give it a go and hope for the best i guess. Really trying to go for something in the APEXi range but if i cant find anything that A. looks hot and B. sounds good i might have to open the door up to HKS and GReedy, but ideally i wanna keep my 3 babies with different personalities.
yes that image is the dual N1 verrry nice looking exhaust
Have you looked at SMB exhausts. http://www.smb.net.au/fullsystemsmazdarx7.htm. They do a nice twin tip. There\'s a group buy over on FD:UK... http://www.fduk.org/forum/showthread.php?t=5728&page=2

There was no official Mazda UK spec RX-7 in \'99. TW Whites have just acted like any other importer, bought the cars in Japan and then got them through SVA to get them UK road legal. I also bought mine from T W Whites back in December \'99. It\'s an import!

I had the GT on mine but it was single pipe 5 1/2 inch box.....
Lets just say it was loud, too loud but mine was totally decatted. They are very good exhausts but just be prepared for upset neighbours :Laugh

Yup, rear bumper is J-Spec. They\'ve just converted one of the reversing lights into a fog light which is what some people like me do :)
Very nice car matey!

You alright kev thanks for the post, didnt mean to make it sound like it was officially liecensed simply ment they where done officially by an official dealership (ive had this with all UK spec cars ive brought from official dealerships, registered and classified UK spec, and i get them insured as UK) how is yours registered with your insurance and log book etc? mine is down as UK spec everywhere and on everything, just like my R34 its an import brought in by an official nissan dealership converted and registered as uk spec. Whats yours down as? My skyline is registered and insured as uk spec and i havent had any trouble with it, saved me a **** load of cash on insurance compared to what it would have been if marked as an import, had to make a claim 2 months ago cause some clown reversed into my side door had no problem with the insurance went straight through.
The only true UK model/spec rx7s where in 93-95 if im right.

Well mine was registered by T W Whites as new at first registration, it is down as 2616cc (but I know lots of people get that changed, I haven\'t bothered). Technically, I was the second owner with 66 miles on the clock when I got it, the 3 year/60,000 mile warranty I got was from the Mazda Approved Used Car Program. I don\'t see anywhere on my V5 that shows whether it is classed as UK or Import. It has always been insured as an import, because it is. As you say, they were manufactured for sale in the UK from 93-95, some hung around in the dealer network as unsold for a while and may be registered as \'96.
HTH
