Title: Associated Rebuild Costs
Post by: TwistedHumour on September 20, 2006, 10:52:05 AM
As a lot of you know â€" I’ve been a wee bit unfortunate as far as my rex ownership is concerned :p  All indications point to the rotor tip/apex seal going on one of the chambers (obviously this needs to be confirmed with a proper compression test).

I was originally planning on waiting till next year to carry out the rebuild, but after some thought I think the sooner the better.  The car is too good to be locked away in a garage for 5-6 months!!

I know the price of rebuilds vary widely depending on what damage has been done to the engine and where you go â€" but I’m budgeting £2.5-£3.5k for that alone.

My question, are there any other costs I haven’t thought about?  Transporting the car up is defiantly one.  Is there anything that I should have done while the engine is out?

Thanks again for all your help
Chris

I think most of the things that needed doing had been done on the car already! I\'d look at the clutch, I know it had done few drag launches in it\'s life.

Where are you planning on taking it?

If you call Tim at RX Motors, he has a guy that he uses for transport who is quite reasonable, cost me about £110 to get mine from Reading to Tim\'s which is 75 miles each way (they will charge you mileage there and back)

true, but then you have to add fuel and insurance to that. I was going to hire a trailer (£50 per day or £95 for a weekend) and borrow a mates Jeep Cherokee but we worked out the fuel would have cost another £35 - £40 and then we would have only saved £20 + we would not have had insurance and you have the hassle!

You Dont Need Extra Insurance To Tow, hassle yes true. but he needs every penny for the rebuild

you don\'t need extra insurance, but are you covered if anything happens to your pride and joy while it is on the trailer.... (Mine was different as the car was SORN and uninsured at the time)

I\'d never condone this, but I knew a friend who\'s dogs ex owners car blew, and he got it an appropriate distance from home, phoned their recovery phone and got the car collected and taken away...

Ok - so I either pay for someone to take it there - saving me loads of hassle and costing a bit more.

Or I hire a trailor and do it myself - setting myself up for a bit of grief and a little bit of savings.  Although I\'m sure one of my mates still has a trailor somewhere!

I think I\'m more inclinded to go with getting it picked up though.

yeah do what bish says, have you got AA or RAC?

in regard to rebuild costs. If you get a proper compression test you can tell if if a side seal has gone or a complete seal.
Seeing as you car has been rebuilt only 20000 miles ago you will NOT need new housings or main bearings I reckon, you might just get away with just have the tips done so rebuild may only cost circa 1K

Also I doubt if the engine blew coz of incorrect mapping, its either a failed fuel component eg Injector, pump, reg or in my case when I warped my seals due to the oil injection system failing eg oil injector diagpram failing on my rear rotor.

Thanks - sounds good!

Where is the closest place I can get compression test done (near to Swansea)?  Or do I need to take it to one of the specialists?

Well you need a proper mazda rotary testing machine to get correct readings only takes ten mins to do so quite quick, try ringing Ross at Dragon he is in Exeter

Has anybody ever tried turning the motor over by hand and looking in the spark plug hole with a mirror and flashlight to watch the seal come past, or am i being a bit stoopid :Laugh

Would be nice if there was a boat from Swansea to Ilfracombe - but its hell of a trip just for a compression test.

Would a.. dare I say it... Mazda dealer be able to check it?

well yes a Mazda dealer should be able to check it seeing as they sell RX8s they must have rotary compression tester to test RX8s. So give them a tinkle

i think recovery is a very good option.  push/toe it a couple of miles down the road.  and say engine problem, you are 99% sure what it is as you know a little about the engine and it is terminal.  you therefore need it recovered to ? (all the way back to pip, if you want) and you can say i will get my  ? (girlfriend etc) to pick me up as i am only down the road and wave good bye to your car knowing it is on its way back to someone you trust.
green flag are very good (they dont really ask any questions they just take it for you) as my mate uses them to pic up non running cars that he buys on ebay.   he must have "changed" his vehicle about 7 times during a year and all funny enough between 12-72 hours before they break down.  i know it will prob cost £80 or something for the year but it is prob worth having with a rex anyway.

If I were in your shoes I\'d get it up to WGT for diagnosis and repair otherwise you\'ll just end up taking it to a dealer, getting a set of numbers with no expertise to interpret them and have to trailer it home and then off somewhere to get it fixed...

Can you get access to a compression tester? Provided you can get hold of one with a non-return valve that you can hold open it\'ll be more than adaquate to diagnose combustion seal failure:-

Three strong jumps of the needle per revolution....seals aren\'t broken & the problem lies elsewhere
Two strong peaks per revolution......side seal failed
One strong peak per revolution.....apex seal failed

i.e. anything other than the first scenario all mean the same thing...rebuild time. All dragging it to Mazda will get you is a nice print-out saying something like 6.5-6.5-0 or 6.5-0-0

Iant - I\'m about 6 miles from a dealer and was going to borrow a trailor and get a mate to take me.  You do have a good point though.

Millspeed - I\'ll speak to a some mates tonight and see if I can get my hands on one.

I\'ve spoke to Pip last night and got an estimate on the costs - and more than likely will be sending it to him.
