Title: Help needed with Rx4!!!
Post by: DemonRx4 on September 13, 2006, 08:31:30 AM
Hey guys and girls,
i have a problem that ive kind of brought onto myself, and im hoping i can get some help from yourselves!! see im new to rotaries in the sense that i\'ve never owned one, however i have been helping a friend of mine build a track
2nd gen for the past 2 years and just recently he has acquired from Carl at Hayward Rotary an RX3 and an RX4 (some of you may of seen the cars) he has kept the super deluxe RX3 and given the RX4 (at my request) to me and i intend to restore it to a drivable condition, heres the funny part! (if you have seen the car stop laughing at me :( I know im mad but i like a challenge) the car is what one might call incomplete i.e. there is no front end and no interior in fact its pretty much a bright orange rolling shell! i need help with anything and everything so i imagine i\'ll be picking all your brains for a long time to come :Tongue1 anyway i suppose to start does anybody know a good place to get donor parts because i have scoured the net for body panels but its as you can imagine impossible HELP PLEASE!!!!!

Im told there is a fine line between Brave and stupid, apparently im balancing on that line.
I was thinking if i cant get a donor car for the cars internals would i be considered an outkast if i were to maybe put in an SR18 engine? i know its not rotary but im kind of just juggling ideas about especially after i saw this guys car

looks a bit like a poor mans GTO judge if you ask me but it is turbo supercharged.

anyway since it would appear i am starting with a blank canvas i am in need of ideas. so chuck em my way peeps.

oh and thanks for the warm welcome guys.

Email me with a list as I have access to a fair number of parts from R100 to RX4. Can also help with near complete cars for projects.

Welcome to the board!

From what I can remember of the car it will be a big project. What are your plans for the bulkhead and transmission tunnel, which were missing last time I saw it?

On a positive note interior trim is no problem. At the moment I\'ve got a 929 (piston engined RX-4) either for parts or for restoration...the verdict\'s still out:rollin  However, it has got most of it\'s interor (blue velour...very seventies), also I\'ve got a full set of genuine RX-4 black vinyl trim.

Mechnically I\'d pick up a scrap 1st gen RX-7, and use that running gear.

Currently I believe it has got Ford Capri struts and axle, are you keeping those or do you want to convert back to Mazda? If you want to go Mazda then once again a first gen RX-7 will be fine as a donor vehicle.

Good luck and keep us all informed of your plans.

Ray

I didnt think of the 1st gen idea my friend works for Rotechnics so he is going to ask about a 1st gen they have there (apparently the body is shot so i wont feel bad about gutting a good car), i think the project is going to take a long time because i have to help him restore the Rx3 and put his 2nd gen back on the road. woo busy year ahead.

Welcome fellow old skool nut case :cheers

I\'ve seen the RX4 in question, all I\'ll say is, Is time on your side and do you have deep pockets (all meant in the nicest possible way of course). Try searching on the Ausrotary website if you are struggling you\'ll probably find you may have to import if Dave & Ray dont have everything you require. Its gonna be costly thats for sure.

You must have really big stones.

All the best and stick with it please, would love to see another old skooler back on the road.

Jase:cheers

Argh i understand now i\'ve spoken to john i gather there has been confusion. im pretty sure i am slightly stupid so no problems there. deep pockets i dont have but with any luck i should be in the army soon so lots of time to save up for lots of goodies :-)

and phil (pipfc) i said you bought a pig of an fd not a dog completely different :-) - as for the colour of the car, you really havent seen it have you! im thinking primer grey for the next god knows how long.

Absolutely incredible she looks stunning!! looks like you\'ve had the wheels off the "General Lee" and they suit it well :yes, i need to make a check list of things to do when we move it from carls place. i\'ll have a fair bit of help though, my dads restoring a 1968 S type jag and he\'s done a 911 already plus my step brothers run a coachworks in northampton area and i have you guys im very impressed with the response its been astounding.

as for my little (BIG) project "pipfc" rightly points out that the capri axle is going to an RX3 i dont know why and to be honest i dont think i want to :Tongue1 i dont know whether its worth rebuilding the bulkhead and transmission tunnel. or sourcing another and welding it in place.

would you believe i used to dispair of hearing about Rotaries because of bloody RX7\'s and now i have discovered these classic beauty\'s what have i been missing?

Heeeeeey welcome to the club. The old skool section is on fire at the moment and has alot of really enthusiests posting in it. It is really good to hear that these 2 old skool mazdas have gone to a good home with brave new owners. Definately ask Ray about stuff as it seems like he has a massive stash of bits and bobs. A donor early model rx7 would make alot of sense, not just engine/gearbox, diff  etc but also wiring loom and stuff like that too.
Post up some pictures. Dont lose heart with the mammoth task and good luck!!!
 cheers, michael.
