Title: intercooler will these work?
Post by: tommygun on September 05, 2006, 10:02:15 AM
Just going threw all the old threads in regards to the various different set ups with intercoolers.

Iv just bought a apexi fc got a fd3 with a s/sttel exhaust and induction done.  Im now in the process of soucing parts for intercooler and injectors.  Im looking at improving the cooling and using somr form of intercooler.

I have found these on ebay sure you have seen them before

Item number: 8077260475 for a forward facing one
and
Item number: 220020033387
for a v type.

I have bought a big front mounted cooler from the second seller before for a rb engined 200sx that worked a treat and performed just as well as a much more well known brand tested on the same day and was suitably impressed with the quality so no worries there.

Im not looking to drag the car nor race it im just after increasing the cooling ofr road use and i seem to be strangley attracted to these as value for money.

Baz at rpm is confident he has found a rad that is smaller than the stock one (but thicker) that can be located to allow more air flow towards this type of cooler.

Has anyone got one or using one?

any comment welcome gota get something sorted for end of this week as the car is due to be finished then!

cheers
tom

Tom top item xs IC i got not overimpressed with fit, pipes had to be butchered a bit to clear strut brace and a washer or 2 put under bolts left side of strut brace to stop it pushing pipe  down, couldnt use right side pipes as left IC tilted so used old hks pipes, also replaced plastic from IC pipes to plenum with Greddy elbow to improve fit.not got a decent cold air feed to it either, also squashed up twin induction kit,i certainly regret buying "cheap" as what was saved on buying well known branded IC was spent with a vengance on labour costs.some have had better experience than me to be honest but if had to do again would have gone elsewhere IMHO

they make it look so snug in their picture dont they!  Might leave that one alone though but the other typre with v mount looks like it could be worth a bash though.
Fabrication side the last one was fitted by rpm and was a work of art when i realy dident think is was going to fit so il let them tackle that!

Might give it a go and will let you know how it goes

If you type in the search button xs power intercooler it will bring up some threads for you to read.  I have one on mine and it is working, but just in the process of removing air pump to allow for a better fit of the pipe to the turbo side and also allow to refit  strut bar.  As pete said, cold air ducting is a problem.  If you find a rad that will allow a separate air duct to the ic direct from the front of the car let me know please.
Cheers

Hi John
did you find out if removing air pump causes a bit of stuttering at low speeds ie: crawling ? from what Pip at wgt said we can probably get a plate made and fitted to help direct cold air to IC and keep warm air away - would have to be tailormade though

I am waiting on a couple of pics of the rad now and will make up a cold air feed to the cooler.  I used to work for reverie making carbon parts for the FP1 Race bikes, honda and jordan f1 teams so will have a rumage there for a few old moulds and see if I can make one up that looks the part too.  If it works before i have to disapear to the land of the rising sun I will let you  know if not it will be in about 4 weeks time.

How easy are the apexi power fc units to install?  Ive just been told by one campany that they are a plug in a play unit and up and running in no time and another company want 2 days of labour to install!  Can anyone shed some light?

cheers

if you going stock mount, try RHD.  EMS shipping takes 3-5 days, and Patrick will put the insurance value less for customs clearance if you ask him to..

PFC is p*** easy

disconnect battery, remove old ecu, clip in apexi, mount in footwell again, reconnect battery, start up car.

initialisation proceedure as follows:

let car idle (it will hunt for a while) for about 10-15 mins.

then switch on heated rear windscreen for 10-15 mins and let idle

Done !!

Had a look at rhd the greedy one without the piping is exactly the one i was running on a 200sx but it was direct from the manufactures.  I paid £160 notes for it new (even the inprinted number on the side matched up with a HKS item!!)
The Bling ones look like the xs power ones think that typre will work will if I can come up with a cold air feed past the rad.

a/c will work instead of heated rear windscreen then

the base map is richer than standard, and will be fine for minor mods like cat back and air filters.

anything more then you ought to get it mapped properly by one of the vendors above

i bought mine off ebay from japan, was fine.  as long as it is for the 13b REW then you will be fine

Pete, Dont know about stuttering at slow speed.  I bought pulley kit from dragon, he said it is a very good mod to remove air pump, more BHP.  I have it booked in to be removed on the 21st this month.  The reason I want it removed is the extra room I\'ll gain and may be able to get strut bar back on.
Keep me posted on the cold air feed.
