Title: Swapping Auto Boxes (FD)
Post by: imebgo on September 04, 2006, 01:47:04 PM
I noticed that there a plenty of custom built cars with 13b engines married up with a supra 5 speed transmission, has anyone swapped the gearbox in an FD?

Then onto my next question, space permitting, and with the nessaccary skills to fabritcate parts for the transplant would it be possible to marry up a 13b with a supra auto box? What would need to be done?

I notice comapnies sell 5-speed conversion kits but nothing for the auto, is this because its impossible/very difficult to transplant, or because no one has ever really wanted a stronger auto box in a rx?

I ask because the my RX7 auto transmission will probably break when I start to up the power.

Options include

1) Gearbox transplant, from a strong auto box ( eg supra )
2) Rebuild autobox stronger
3) Buy a supra (which is something I dont want to do! I love my rx!)

Manual is the obvious choice, but this is not an option for me because of a certain disability means I can only drive autos.

Cheers, James

Would be nice to see some real world examples, the advice I was given was the weak point would be the transmission.  Any advice to strenghten would be appreciated.

Im trying to register on FD:UK now but having problems, im not getting the activation email :(

We sorted out Sicknotes rebuild for his Autobox and the guy used Mitsubishi 4x4 parts to beef it up from memory.

Do a search in Australia and you will find company\'s that will sell you a Supra to FD adapter plate if you want to go down that route

Any more info on this australian company, im having trouble finding them.

Will the plate be for a 5 speed transmission? Or are the 4speed auto, 5 speed similar enough to reuse the same adaptor?

Oh, and what sort of price would I be looking for you guys or someone similar to rebuild the autbox like sicknote\'s.

Cheers, James
