Title: big brake kit issues!
Post by: Ed_RX7 on September 03, 2006, 10:47:29 AM
I have a Willwood big brake kit on my fd and when they get HOT i get virbration in the steering wheel but when they cool down the vibration goes. I have a feeling the rotors are fitted the wrong way round. Any one know what way the vanes on the rotors should be facing? Down or Up.

Or does anyone have any theories on this?

Hi Ed,

Cant see anyway the vanes can make a difference,

Are they WillWood two piece Disc\'s, if so I think I would remove them and take them apart and carefully inspect the faces for witness marks of any movement taking place that shouldn\'t be as a safety precaution if nothing else.

If you find nothing swap the bells over on the Disc\'s and see if the problem alters.

When you put them back to gether make sure you tighten up the oposite bolts as you go around .. ie like a clock face do 12 then 6, 3 then 9 etc

If the problem does not go away and you feel it is due to the rotors and bell\'s get some AP, Endless or project U ones..... there is no reason why they would not work with wilwood calipers .... just a thought

hmm thanks for the replys....nothing seems to make sense though..thats why i\'m thinking the vanes as it looks like they are the wrong way round and i only get the problem when i really give them some stick...but when i ease off they\'re fine..maybe i\'ve warped a disc or something?

As the disc is going round shouldn\'t the vane be collecting air..ie downward facing towards the car....like a scoop?...if so they are definately wrong as mine are the other way.

The vanes/grooves should face forward, however many people face them backwards as aesthetically they look better, but I have never ever know this cause any problems no matter what the make

ok cheers bud...looks like mine are fitted the right way then. But as Clive said i thought logically the vanes should face forward!.....oh well there goes my theory........maybe i\'ll adjust the bias see if that helps?????? thoughts?

Might be worth checking the thickness of the discs. I remember years back when using wilwood discs, that when getting towards replacement they would get a vibration when warm/hot.

I don\'t think its the disc fish as they have not got any form of lip whatsoever

are you talking about the vanes on the outside or the inside of the disk

the ones on the inside should be swept backwards as shown in the AP link

the vanes on the outside it doesnt really matter

Craig...yep i\'m on about the ones inside the disc....checked and they appear to be round the right way.....so i\'m stumped at the moment!

bit obviousl (but you always gotta check the obvious first i spose just to discount it) but are the discs straight? ie did you bed them in properly? If they are warped, it wont be as apparent when cold as it would be when hot.

yeah as said sounds like they are either warped or your pads are melting due to you giving them too much stick.

Sounds like pad material left on the discs is causing the discs to not heat uniformly, hence the judder when hot.

I\'d get a set of higher (tempeature) rated pads, and (this is important!!!) bed them in properly. Bedding them in properly should hopefully remove any old pad material left on the discs.

Alternatively, can you get discs skimmed?

If the problem is just pad material on the disk surface fine emery clath will sort it without damange to the disk as long as you don;t go absolutely mad.  Skimming could be reserved if this doesn\'t work...

Max you might be onto something there. my front drivers side disc is significantly darker than the other side...is that warping or pad material?

Wher would i get them skimmed or should i just chuck them and get a new set.....not worth risking my life for:2eek :driving

Just something to think about. I was chasing this very annoying problem on my old gti-r. I had 325mm grooved discs. As soon as I went to plain discs it was like silk. I spent years changing bushes, links, different pads, skimming the discs:2Mad. I have also heard some brands of pads can\'t handle the heat and will burn deposits on the disc causing vibration. Don\'t quote me on that though.
