Title: Potential Newbie - RX7 as a daily drive?
Post by: BabyNSX on November 17, 2003, 12:06:16 PM
Potentially the owner of FD RX7 by the end of the week, but I want to use it as a daily drive into the City every day. Traffic, stop starts, potholes etc etc. Not the ideal car I know, but the weekends and the track days will be when I really get to use her.
Any advice on using a 3rd gen RX7 as a daily commuter car - mpg, driveability, etc. Will I be sitting in my drive warming her up, when I\'m already late for work? Tough decision for me, I want one but it must fit the role of weekend car and daily driver.
Any advice much appreciated. Tks

Many people (myself included) use them as daily drives so they are ok.  I cant comment on driving in the city, but I imagine as long as you can put up with it and whatever suspension you use the car itself would be fine.

You will probably be around 15mpg though.

You want need to sit on the drive to warm it up, but dont drive it hard untill its warm either.

Hi,

I use mine as a daily through London and it\'s okay - not great for mpg (get about 16).  I ended up moving my working day forwards so I\'m in work for 8 and leave either early or really late to aviod the worst of the jams but it\'s not too bad.

If the car\'s standard then you\'ll be okay - the clutch isn\'t too heavy but it can be a bit jerky in really slow crawling traffic.  I usually end up letting a gap form to make sure I can just roll along slowly. (until some prat decided to overtake and found himself stuck on the other side of the road \'coz I buried the loud pedal when I saw what he was doing! :D )

the key thing to be aware of is the cost of running it - every mile I drive is ~25p in petrol before you figure in servicing, tax, loadns etc...)  Probably more like 60p/mile* in real terms.
