Title: Turbo or not Turbo...
Post by: Prof on August 30, 2006, 08:12:58 PM
Got a question on different turbo options for the FC.

Not looking for mental power, so BFO turbos are out really.

But looking at 2 possible hybrid turbo solutions.

1st Option is a T3/T4 Hybrid with a ported wastegate and high flowing hot side.  The front end is a T04B with 60 trim.  Good for upto 450BHP

2nd Option is a HT18S/T4 Hybrid with a ported wastegate, hiflowed turbine (but still twin scroll) and a T04B front end with 57 trim.  Good for upto 400BHP

Both the front ends are virtually identical, and the turbo unit would be a direct bolt on with no manifold changes or external wastegate.

I will not want to make the maximum out of either option, just looking for mid 300 at the fly, and the fuelling will be setup to support that (larger secondaries and more use of the primary injectors).

So the question is does anyone have any experience of the T3/T4 hybrids - what are they like as regards spooling up, as one thing I love about the HT18S is it\'s quick on the boost.

Any advice much appreciated.

Cheers,

Prof.  :cheers

Yeah - that car does look good Era !

Thing is I don\'t want so much power in the car that the engine rips itself out of the vert!  It might have a strong floorpan, but its not as rigid as a coupe.

Still, quite a few Yanks are running 300-350 in the soft top and seem to get away with it, so why not one of us limeys. :cool

You can go for a scaled down power version, but the setup is soooooo impressive..:yes :Thumbsup!

Hi Prof,
Your first option won\'t hold 450. To make a pretty strong, not over the top setup i suggest you use a Microtech, TO4E hybrid, 1000cc secondaries and your Arc cooler. The T04E hybrid will use a Turbonetics cold side with S5 hotside. Give me a shout on 01980654188 to have a chat. Price wise, i should be able to get the lot for under a grand.

Injectors, microtec and turbo for less than a grand,  that sounds a bit cheap?

Hi John,
are you settled back in good old blighty?

When are we gonna see your beast in action,  you have a title to retake!

Hey Ant, hows it going?
Settling in, bloody weather is crap though! If Prof is interseted, i may be able to pull a few strings to make it as affordable as possible...all depending on the supplier!

You see, something about the title is that it has always been mine... i am just soft enough to let you pretenders walk the walk!!

Love
John

Yes - thanks Stu!  I was looking at some from Canada on eBay - but always get done for postage and duty on those - so the ones you sent are a good price.

Still can\'t find any springs though :(

I PM\'d John just so I didn\'t bore everyone with my shopping lists !

The tubby does sound iteresting! :)

Well I went for a sort of inbetweeny - sort of Option 1 with a bit of HT18S in it, the exducer wheel is from a T3, but in an HT18s housing, and is high flowed, wastegate is ported to allow boost above 12 PSI, and the front end is a T04B with a .60 wheel on it.

A piccy:

where did you source that from matey

is it a direct bolt no with no exhaust mods ?

and finally - how much :D

Its coming from California - including postage - but not duty and VAT - we\'ll see how much that stings me - it was £378 all in.  Most of it is all new parts as well, and it\'s oil and water cooled just like the old one is.

Direct bolt on - no need for new manifold or exhaust, and with my 3" decat exhaust and HKS mushy this is going to be pumping some big air. :)

Now I know that when the engine next needs a rebuild I am going to have to get a street port done ! :bandit (When that happens I will go to 800\'s on the primary rail as well, and up the fuel pressure a tad)

But with a boost controller and the extra fuelling I have planned, this should net me about 330-350 on the fly with the engine as is (look out FD boyz)

So I need to get all my suspension sorted before this goes in.:2eek

Prof,

Have you trial fitted the turbo yet :D

I\'ve just done a quick mock up on my workbench of my HKS manifold - T3-T4 Adaptor - GT35 Turbo.

I dont think it\'s going to fit :(

You could\'nt measure the distance from the housings to body for me please i cant get to mine at the mo :(

Sorry Paul - as Stu says, I have only payed for this bad boy today !

Expect it to be here in about a week all being well.

From memory, the HKS manifold brings the turbo quite a way out from the engine, the one I am buying bolts straight onto the standard manifold, so it will sit much closer to the engine like the stock tubby does.  The only difference is the compressor housing on the front is a little bigger, and the piping will need to be 3" onto the compressor.

Does your manifold have the piping for the external wastegate ?

Yes mate,

Its the cast iron version with the piping for a wastegate.

Excellent stuff Stu - I can see there are going to be some serious FC\'s at next years events - Mark (Sadgoth) should have his running by then as well.

There just has to be an RSIV now !:driving :guinness :cool

Good idea about the thread - I was thinking along the same lines - pictures of all the goodies before they go on, and some after shots as well.

Would go for after market ecu. Front mount or V mount i/c. put afpr on it, Would not worry about uprating the injectors they flow well and can make over 400 rwhp. I admit I had insane rail pressure but the stock 550 all round can make over 400 rwhp. With that tubby I suspect 350 fwhp> I say this cos i made 450 rwhp with a t04R and there isn\'t much more that can be done to my setup

550\'s will die being used on the road at high pressure. Be warned!
