Hi,
This is a question more aimed probably at people who have had a go at their own engine rebuilds...
What sort of thickness of steel would you say is appropriate to make an engine stand adpator plate out of? I was thinking 6mm sheet steel?
A bit hard to explain what im trying to make....basically im gonna make it out of steel and itll look something like (yes its a bit crap but i knocked it up jst now in paint lol) : http://gallery147166.fotopic.net/p33392269.html
Its obviously a large steel plate with the white holes being the bolt pattern of the engine stand and the red/brown holes being the bolt pattern on the front iron (if you sit the engine down so that youre looking at the front, then itll be on the right hand side of the iron, - theres 3 holes and a stud on that side which i reckon i can use)
Does anyone have any views on this arrangment and the suitablilty of the front iron mounting point i have chosen? All comments as always appreciated! :)
Thanks
This is an interesting one for me, as I\'m going to be doing my own engine build very shortly. It looks pretty good to me. I was going to do the same thing, copying the Mazda special service tool. Page C-21 in the engine section of the FSM on rx7city.com has diagrams of how Mazda do it.
I\'d go for 8 or 10mm, and maybe run some strengthening strips for piece of mind. Your desing looks pretty good, though might need some spacers between the plate and the engine, but I don\'t see any reason it shouldn\'t work.
I\'ve built myself a tool that bolts to the engine and engages with the starter ring, retaining the flywheel while you undo the nut. It\'s based on the SST, and has worked on two engines so far. If you want to borrow it let me know - shouldn\'t cost much to post.
Was thinking about doing a batch of them, and seeing if any vendors would want to sell them. Fairly simple and cheap to make. Any feedback, anyone?
Good luck, btw :Thumbsup!
If you wouldnt mind lending me that tool, id be really grateful!! how soon could i borrow that! Flywheel nut is the next one to come off so the sooner the better really....wasnt really backing the angled locking bar method as ive only really got access to very thin aluminium and the i dont think ittl hold up....
No worries. I\'ve undone mine, and I won\'t need it for a while now, so I can send it out tomorrow for you. Just email me your address to ianelvar (at) hotmail.com.
It\'s designed to fit onto the top right transmission bolt hole. Let me know what you think of it. I hired an electric impact driver from my local speedy tool hire, as I couldn\'t get the B******* to budge with hand tools. Was a breeze with the impact tho.. Highly recommend the "percussive" method for removing the flywheel once the nut is off as well, but that\'s a different story! ;)
welded mine myself.... just take a solid metal plate.
