Title: Boost pattern and ECU
Post by: JimboRX-7 on November 15, 2003, 02:32:16 PM
I\'ve just fitted a boost gauge to the RX-7 to see if the boost pattern is correct.  I\'m getting:

Consistent 12-6?-8 psi

Where should I start investigating?  The 8 feels a bit low after getting 12 low in the rev range.

If it\'s anything to do with it, the car has upgraded air filters and intercooler.  I had a look at the ECU to see if this was standard.  I don\'t know what a standard ECU looks like, but the back plate was sealed with \'PanSpeed\' stickers.  (See photos)

If someone has changed the boost levels, where will this have been done?

Cheers!

I have exactly the same symptoms on my car. I think I have a standard ECU. I cannot comment on wether yours is modded or not, though.

Our boost pattern is supposed to be: 12 -8 -12. (My car is a 92, so 11 -8 -11 or so for me)

I have replaced all the vacuum hoses, tested all solenoids, removed the Cat, and even replaced the Turbos!  Still no  improvement.

I have a spare ECU, so I will try that next.

There is also a way of rigging up a non-sequential setup, for diagnostic purposes, so that would be my next step.

Sorry if this isnt helpful, I guess I just wanted to empathise!!

I\'ve been reading a bit more about it in various places - I thought it was meant to be 10-8-10, but according to something I find that was supposedly used by Mazda dealers, it should be:

RPM     PSI
3,000    10
4,500    8 as secondary turbo comes on
4,500 +    10 recovers almost immediately from short dip
6,000 +    from 10 to about 8 gradually, and holds to redline

These readings indicate normal operation. Readings will vary with altitude and temperature (& intercooler & induction??),

(i.e. lower temperature = higher boost / higher altittude = higher boost).

I downloaded a load of docs which are now sat on my hard drive, so I can\'t remember where this came from.

I also understand different exhausts affect the transition.

I going to get someone to sit in the car and watch the boost gauge to get a more accurate idea about what\'s going on.  It might be my readings are within tolerances afterall.  I\'m certainly holding 8 to redline as above.

It drives very well as it is, so I might just check it\'s getting enough fuel at 12 psi and leave it as it is.

Almost wish I\'d never fitted the boost gauge.  Ignorance is bliss :)
