hi guys im thinking of going single, my question is which manifold/ down pipe to use? i could buy a kit but i have been looking at the hks cast manifold, my questions are would there be any performance difference, is there room to have a medium t4 in that close to the inner wing and is it true that the cast manifold helps keep the car quieter?
any other suggestions also gratefully received :)
thanks
matt
I have a hks cast manifold - I opted for this from a durabillity standpoint - I know stainless steel manifolds aren\'t as strong as cast ones from past experience and didn\'t want any cracking problems.
I\'m not sure if they are better on a RX as they have less tubes but on my Subaru and VW the stainless ones were a pain sometimes and I can weld up my own stuff.
I\'m fairly sure a nice tubular manifold will flow better than the cast one but the cast one will retain more heat esp if wrapped which is going to be good for the turbo once it\'s running and working (perhaps not when you shut the engine off tho)...
Now if you could afford and inconel manifold that\'d flow really well and be super strong... :)
Well i have had slightly diffrent experiance, I have had all sorts of Manifolds.
The HKS Cast manifold suffers realy Badly from Cracks, They Go between the Two Runners (where it goes into the Turbo) and will get worse until it blows.
The Greddy Type Stainless Tube manifold, Well they have a Bad reputation but the one i owned was second hand when i got it and it had been cracked in its passed but had been welded up and reinforced, In two years i never had a Porblem with it, But i belive the Stainless is Brital and won\'t flex with the weight of a Turbo on it so it Cracks.
I have also had a Custom Mild Steel Manifold, In my Opinion this was the best of the lot, It was\'nt anything to look at and was Quite heavy but it was made of 3" wall thickness Tube and i sold it to a Pal who has it to this day and never had a Problem.
So... If i was Going to Put together a Single Turbo kit i would proberly have a custom one made. But having said that i\'d have another Mild steel one (I bought it from this guy in the US mazdaspc@netzero.com) There Cheap and realy hard wearing, Just make sure its Thick Pipe.
Hi Matt, good luck with this endeavour mate. But what ever you do dont buy a turbo kit from ebay buy new or from someone on here !!! I ended up with a manifold from a FC and it fouled on the engine mounts. But that one is a greddy cast type and my car is to bloody loud.
The kit that i have always been impressed with is the apexi (r6 is it??? tis early) wish i had bought one now.:King
cheers Andy
thanks for all your help guys, also any pics would be appreciated
thanks
matt
Interesting on the HKS manifold - I\'m going to keep an eye on that and see if it happens to mine.
Mild Steel is definately going to be the way to go as it can take the high temps; although burns stainless make some nice double slip collectors which are supposed to help with thermal expansion/cracking...
well after a lot of looking if i can get away with import duty ect i might save £500/£600, if i get stung ill not save a bean but it would be a lot more hassle than just phoning clive!
i think ill have a chat with a few suppliers over here. although im still waiting to hear back from this bloke as i havent seen another kit like it:

thanks for all your help though, i hadnt even thought of the cracking problem with the cast manifold.

If you are seriously going to go the Gt35 route it may be worth you talking to A-Spec.
You\'ll find them on //www.rx7club.com (Can\'t remember the Web site address) but they do a Kit called the 500r which is very good and you can\'t fault there manifolds (plus they do a RHD kit which is handy)
funny you should say that i have been looking at both their gt35r and 500r kits but they have never got back to me about a rhd kit.
As far as i\'m aware they are the only people in the US that sell custom kits for RHD cars.
The only Real diffrence is the Down pipe but that could be got around quite easy by buying a Kit without one and having one made here.
I\'d sugest if your having problems with them replying to mails to ring them.
Web site //www.a-spectuning.com
i think that might be the way to go but a phone call to us on mobile. i think i need a day in the office. ;)
matt
got mail from a-spec today :( they dont do a rhd kit YET!!! they tell me its in on the way ;)
matt
They are in the middle of doing a rhd kit though and hopefully it wont be much longer.
Shaun
i take it your waiting for one as well
Just been keeping a close eye on it !
