Title: Fitted PFC & Killed a Fireblade
Post by: cannibal on August 23, 2006, 01:29:45 PM
I finally got round to fitting my Apexi PFC and commander last night. Went through the initialisation steps, which helped a lot with the rough idle I had, then decided to take it out for a spin. As I joined the A22 at Whyteleafe I could see two bikes coming up in my rear view mirror. This is a 30 zone so, as a fellow biker, I moved over to let them pass. They decided to hang back so I thought I\'d have some fun when we get on the Caterham bypass. To cut a long story short they where history. I could see the lead rider leaning in to the bends as I disappeared around the next bend. They obviously caught me when I got stuck behind a car in the single lane section and the front bike, a firebalde, out accelerated me when the road opened up again, but I had him and his mate, on an old CBR600 I think, well and truely beat on the fast twisty bits. The guy on teh 600 gave me the thumbs up as he passed me at the lights, but his mate I fear was a bit naffed off. I felt teh car pulled a lot better with the PFC even though I had a remapped standard ECU on the car before.

I\'m thinking of installing a Power FC on a standard FD RX-7. Do you have any mods on your car or is it standard? I take it you must be running and standard default set up for an RX-7 on the Power FC? Will you be getting the Power FC mapped?

Really what I’m after is finding out how well the Power FC runs on a standard RX-7 without getting it mapped.

Excellent killing, not sure I would be brave enough to take on a motorbike !

Apart from an induction kit and exhaust system the car is standard. I hope to do a few things to it and get it mapped, but the base map seemed fine last night. The commander gives you lots of info too that I didn\'t have before, i.e. accurate water and air temps, boost pressure, etc.

I must admit I wasn\'t watching the boost levels and as for beating the bikes, I know the road and like a lot of these things its\' down to bottle. If I was on my bike I doubt I would have been taken on that stretch of road, because I know it well.

Hi Mate, are you noticing that after fitting the Apexi you get an immediate extra few bhp? and have you still got standard suspension? be intersted to know, cheers Bob
edit just noticed you said it pulled better from low down!

Whether it is ultimate power or just delivery it\'s hard to say, but it definately seemed to pull better. I didn\'t notice the dip in boost before the second turbo kicks in. This has quite often started the clutch to slip (I\'ve got a new one, but just haven\'t got round to fitting it yet). The suspension has been uprated to Gab coilovers. I don\'t think they are the best on teh market and I find then a bit hard, but with the new tyres (Toyo R888s) it seems to handle well.

Thanks for that, Be even better then when it\'s mapped! i find my old standard sus too hard too and hesitate to floor it because it skips around a bit, hoping to get tien flex for mine, then get Apexi, gather you well pleased with the Toyo\'s

I did a similar thing a good while back , going to manchester from liverpool on the east lanks express , two bikes ( ducati and a cbr ) sat at the lights with me next to them , lights changed so I thought I\'d see how long I could keep up , well the ducati just vanished but the cbr couldn\'t get away untill I hit about 130 ish and he disapeared .... behind me :D

Got to the next lights and the ducati was waiting , i pulled up , cbr followed , I tried to let on but they didn\'t want to talk so as the lights changed off we went again , same scenario , 5 sets of the lights , beat the cbr every time and my car wasn\'t far from stock then

Feels good toasting bikes :D

I think it was a CBR I raced at East Coast Extreme, I beat him to 60 by about half a second (I was 4.3 and he was around 4.8) but he ended up taking me over the 1/4 mile stretch, guessing the old power to weight ratios started taking effect.

I used to have a 954 RR2 2003 Blade, now have a 2002 SP2 VTR 1000 race replica for my sins.. I also have a 420 bhp RX-7... for my other sins :D :D!

Realistically - Get up next to a well ridden healthy superbike like this and even with a single tubby, your Rex will find it hard to keep up.

My SP2 recently beat a friend\'s 450 bhp R34 GT-R on a fairly straight road recently... by a long way. It wasn\'t even close. And my Rex is marginally faster than his GT-R on a straight line (Eats him on corners, but that\'s another matter :D)!

SP2\'s got a \'measley\' 135 bhp but a better power/weight ratio.
A Blade weighs less and has more power...(Just doesn\'t handle as well as the SP2)!

Chances are, when you beat a bike - the rider isn\'t confident enough to cane it around long sweeping corners, or is afraid to launch it because he doesn\'t know how to, can\'t really lean into corners, etc...
A lot of new bike riders are also afraid of speed because they\'re not very skillful in braking hard, when they need to slow down proper quick..

Next time, look out for a 1 litre bike where the guy\'s knee sliders are worn and his tyres visibly worn all the way to the edges...
Challenge him to a race and if he takes the bait, you might find he dissapears in front of you... :D

Miguel.

Hi Migs

I struggled to keep up with you at times when I was on your SP2 on that trip to the mountains, but you\'re right, I don\'t think a car has ever gotten the best of me on the Bim. It\'s all down to confidence and knowing the road.

ha, ha, ha - Now I recognise the car...! Thought that Avtar looked familiar Rich! - Hadn\'t realised I was talking to someone who does know how to ride a bike properly and so knows what they can do.

You need to come back to Japan and visit again sometime, mate.

Having ridden bikes for many  years and spent 4 years instructing on a circuit, I also know how to ride a bike.  But I still find it rare for a bike to keep with me, let alone beat me in a good car.

Admittedly traffic can get the better of a car, but in the bends and braking the car has it every time.

The Ring is a good point in case for this.....there are very few bikers that will hassle me out there....in fact its much the opposite

The last time you were out on a bike riding hard, did you find many cars could keep up? Knowing you can ride a big bike well, I\'d suspect not many! :)

I\'m sure you\'ll also agree, a lot of bigger bikes in the UK are ridden by people without a lot of experience (Born again bikers!), so they\'re rarely ridden to their true potential.

I suspect not many cars have had the better of Cannibal on his SB6-R Bimota 1100.... Rich is one of the quickest bike riders I had the pleasure of riding with regularly on weekends, before I left and moved to Japan in \'98....  :D :WaveBye

...Your first time on an SP2 and first time on a bike on Japanese mountain roads, wearing my gear. Wasn\'t your bike and you weren\'t at all used to any of it.

The SP2\'s capable of 270 + km/h and accelerates quicker, had you been used to the bike, it would have killed the rex... Corners no, as the rex was wearing super sticky S tyres, etc. but I was carrying Yuko in the back of the rex too, remember!

I think I rode the bike back that night and promptly left you, the girls and Dan behind after we swapped... But you weren\'t trying very hard...

Ok so picture the scene. The "Ring" as the track then a 1 litre bike with good rider and 500bhp track prepped RX7 with a good driver, who would win?

I would be happy to take on a good rider with just my 350bhp car

And unless it was one of a few I think I would win!

If you compared lap times of a professionally ridden sports bike with sorted suspension, brakes, tyres, etc. and a professionally driven track prep\'d RX-7 of high power, I think you might be surprised at how little difference there would be on track times.

I did go back...but we were having problems with the suspension and oil

Unfortunately due to an oversight......one of the oil feed pipes had started to perish so we were getting really bad problems with oil getting on the turbo.  This however has now been sorted as of today!!!

I will be back there next year though, but in a very different car ;)

even on the Ring given its bends? I am inclined to think a car would have it on the ring by a fair margin

It is very difficult to get the full power down on the bigger bikes, especially through the corners, this is where the cars come into their own.  Braking is a lot more efficient as you have 4 large lumps of rubber instead of one very small tyre patch on the front wheel....Dont get me wrong the brakes are very powerful, but a set up car should out brake a bike

Never been to the \'Ring myself, but if it\'s all bends, it may be cars are faster there. There\'s always going to be situations which are more suited to either cars or bikes.

Here\'s one for you. On real roads, with real road and traffic conditions in the dry, no matter how much a car tries, a bike will always be faster point to point.

With my T51 set up the only fun I get is with bikes. They hate me as they can\'t get away or get blown away.
I loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooove it.:flamed

Warthog,

How did you do in your stock twin set up against bikes?

I was running 400 at the rear wheels at 1.4 bar in the end and yes I was blowing them away, but I would not have liked to sustain that boost the way I sustain it now. I am only running 0.95 bar at just under 400 rwbhp but I must admit it feels a different type of power. You can feel that the turbo just wants to go for more boost and keep going up that steep map line.
I now have the Motec ecu to open up the potential of the T51 and it will be fitted in Jan together with a full 4" exhaust and some other goodies. I will only be happy when I am driving my street FD around with 500 safe ponys at the rear wheels. Some people say to me that they just can\'t get there heads around having that much power. But it is all relative, you get used to it and the car is set up to take that power as well as stop on a button. HTH.
