Title: light speed
Post by: Adie Moore on August 20, 2006, 02:56:01 PM
Has any one ever weighed their air con system. i\'m thinking of removing mine purely to save weight and wondered if it would be worth the hassle. Also how bigger job is it, the compresser looks easy enough, just need a new drive belt, but the condenser on the front, dose the bumper and any thing else have to come off. cheers

i\'m ditching mine soon the compressor is easy to shift, RX motors can supply the belt you\'d need. i\'m told the dash needs to come out to  get the parts out inside  the car but it all weighs a ton a worth while loss...

Youd prolly find it easiest to remove the condensor with the bumper off. The pump is easy to remove....Im toying with removing mine for the weight saving and just removing the pulley and fitting a blanking plate to it...

Condensor comes off from underneath (remove plastic undertray 1st). Dead easy.

Recommended modification, especially if you dont use the air-con anyway. We stock the belt if you need it.

Power steering is the one I\'m wondering about... it made a huge difference to my Prelude, not just to steering feel but having the engine not driving the pump makes it rev like its on speed :)

No Power steering is ok when car is moving, but to park you need arms like Schwarzenegger!

ok, so i\'m a bad person. weathers nice today so decided to get cracking and told the boss i was working from home. not a complete lie, i was working... just it was on my car. any who, rad was a pice of p155, under tray off, 4 bolts and away, under tray back on. half hours job. to answer my own question rad weighed 2.1kg, strange thing with little round window in the top 0.6kg. now havn\'t got round to getting belt yet so couldnt do the pump, but can any one do a quick bullet point guide as to how to do it. save me doing it through trial and error, because it looks like the power steering has to come off. if this is so might try it withoun for a bit and let you know how bad it is. cheers adie

use an electric power steering pump from a 106gti or saxo vts, vauxhall zafira , ctr etc etc... saw them on ebay for under £200. does away with the belt but you still get your power steering

i was toying with the idea of removing mine, but couldn\'t make my mind up untill  i picked up my RX from Tims earlier this year, and he\'d ripped it out anyway:2eek  But all was good as it was knackered and i never used it, so my mind was made up for me :D

To be honest there is noway the FD can be any heavier than the Prelude to turn as the Prelude has all the driveshafts and g/b up the front as well.

I\'ll decide later, I might disable it, drain the rack and look the unions and then test it before I make my mind up 100% :)
