Title: Problems after rebuild
Post by: a.evdokimov on August 19, 2006, 10:10:37 AM
Hi everybody! Got a problem with my fd3s. Engine has just been rebuilt, i was still running it in - had about 300 miles more to go. There was a 3000rpm limit installed, so i couldn\'t really drive it yet - what a temptation... Anyway,
I was standing at an idle, it was pretty hot outside - and all of a sudden car shuts down..I try to start it - nothing. Tried it a couple of times more and it did start, only it sounded very rough. I had to push the accelerator just to keep it running. When i tried to drive it -it felt like one rotor fell asleep.. When I let go of the accelerator on the traffic lights, engine almost instantly shut off while the car was slowing down to a standstill. Another thing i\'ve noticed was LOTS of black smoke - like a fu**ing train or something.. Bare in mind that I only accidently went over 3000rpm once or twice. Mechanic told me once it has gone over the limit, system cuts the fuel - could that be a reason? Any suggestions? Thanks!

As far as I understand, If the smoke is black this is related to the car running very rich... ??

^^^ think your right bud, sounds like overfueling. I would take it back to who ever did the rebuild mate.

The thing is - I was driving those 500 something miles after a rebuild with NO PROBLEMS at all. And this what happened took place while i was standing still on an idle - that\'s what surprises me the most....

Sorry to hear you\'re having problems.

Does sound like it\'s running very rich.
I\'d check that the MAP sensor is connected (vac line, and electrical connector), as that could cause it to run rich like that, and it\'s an easy starting point.
Could be an injector stuck open, but that\'s kinda rare.
Have you checked the error codes from the ECU?

http://www.k-rad.com/errcodes.html

That will soon tell you if a sensor has come unplugged, or wires have managed to short somewhere.

Have you taken a plug out to see what they look like?

As for the battery problem; has this started since the rebuild, since it started running badly, or has it always done that?

Well the battery was replaced with a smaller one and relocated to the back of the car. The map sensor seemed ok... Can\'t check the error codes, cos i had taken off the actual commander controller.. ~but the plugs - gotta check them...I mean what on earth can happen to a car while it\'s standing still and idling???

if its overfuelling, the engine could be getting flooded when sat at idle because there is too much fuel being thrown in, this would cause it to stall as the air/fuel ratio\'s would be all over the place... just my 2p

I would have thought that it would only over fuel if it had an Apexi ecu that had not been mapped as yet! as you say it was ok for the first 500, has it got a standard ecu? what was the 3000 rev limit installed? my engine builder red lined mine at around 500 miles worried me but he was very confident and no problems at all since that 10k ago, best take it back to your builder so that he is aware of the problem, Who rebuilt it? Good luck, hope it\'s something simple,
Bob

I notice you are in London and a car running very rich on limited rpm in traffic is most likely to choke up, I would replace the plugs and see how she goes, one rotor and at idle sounds to me like it just needs a good clean out of the soot and build up thats been created by london running in.

ro284, it has an apexi ecu, and Ross, at Dragon - sort a like made a 3000 rpm limit - which means that i cannot rev it higher than that - just a protective measure during the running in period.

When driving around slowly there is a build up of carbon deposits in the engine thus needing a nice blast now and again, obviously if you are running in then you cannot give it a good blast, however change plugs and check map sensor then take out for a nice long drive on the m-way keeping the engine nicely ticking over.

Also if Ross has rebuilt it surely a phone call to Ross would help as he will know your particular set up and what might be the problem ?

Yep i own the Purple Dragon rx7 running fine at the mo, well has been running fine for over 3yrs now so canna complain too much :cool

Like i say i think the best thing to do is give Ross a bell and see what the best thing to do is as he will know your set up since car was rebuilt there, best of luck mate :wave
