Post by: the lemster on August 17, 2006, 01:24:17 PM
everyone...  with all this talk of feed bonnets and carbon shafts along with ported engines and  everthing else...

what i would leik to know and maybe keep record of is how much peop[le have spent on their cars and in how long...

I will start

£6500  bought in sept 04
£615 new clutch
£180 new vacuum hoses
£950 inlet manifold gasket replacement ( £20 quid parts rest is labour!!!!)
£3980 rebuild by rotechniks including release bearing, coolant hoses and a few other bits on their way out
£500 various other bit that need doing... solenoids.. coolant flush etc..

total of ....

£12725 ( approx)

and the car is standard!!!!!!!!!

maybe if this takes off we could stickify the thread?...

£50 new rats nest
£20 braided fuel line
£10 for 4 check valves
£30 for new exhaust gasket and turbo gaskets
£70 for downpipe
£120 GReddy CAT Back (bargain from the US - rotary ressurection)
£50 for brand new lowering springs (same as above)
£50 for braided brake hoses
£70 new SFS rad pipes
£10 for new dash \'hood\'
£20 paints and materials for refurbing centre console
£90 km to mph speedo conversion

I think there was a similar thread a while back that had the same kind of question.
IIRC John York was the \'winner\' and had spent some 50k on his slippery banana rx in 5 years!!

To be honest not had a very good time with my Rex. After a few problems with the engine a month or so after i bought it, (Ant @ Sterte Garage and Pip @ WGT were awesome getting this sorted though), a period of being skint meant i didn\'t get to use the thing or get an apexi ecu that i needed. I began to use it again and some clever fella in his Mummys Audi thought it\'d be good to drive into the side of me!!! By the end of the year though everything should be rosey!!

£11,500 purchase price (included re-build well worth the money and would recommend Sterte Garage (A7NTY on here)

£330 - for part service/small engine work from WGT

This is pretty much it for the time being so.....£11,830 for me.

Car is currently awaiting new front bumper, nearside front wing. Also once these have been done it\'ll be getting a apexi ECU fitted and if funds allow a complete re-spray thanks to the local t**ts and there golf balls.

Here\'s a pic before the smash @ a northern meet.

I did this on Pistonheads, just I don\'t keep it up to date, here goes:

car: £1500
rebuild + porting: £2200
Tein Springs: £200
first FMIC + custom piping: £650
Microtech LT10s ECU: £700
Apexi Turbo Timer: £60
Wheels: £500
Turbo II Leather seats and Alloy Bonnet: £250
2nd hand shell bought for Konis, exhaust and Microtech Dash Unit: £200

so far: £6260

currently undergoing:
new much bigger V-Mount IC: approx £250
uprated Rad: £250
T70 Turbo: approx £1000
external wastgate: approx £400
4x1000cc injectors: approx £500
Fuel Pump approx £150
FPR: approx £120
Apexi Boost Controller £250
labour charges: who knows??? (prob about £1500 or so!)

so another £4500 ish to spend!

Have sold the first FMIC, the SS Exhaust and one or two other bits so I\'ve made back about £550!

wow, by the time i\'ve done this phase, I\'ll have spent nearly £10.5k (less the £550) on a Turbo II! Who says us FC owners are tight-wads?

(now replaced with 2nd hand Konis and Pi Springs)

Fair comment Adam, think you will find those costs included all fuel, insurance + the cost of purchase which is now nearly six years ago and was a stonking £18K, so yes I have spent some £££\'s on my hobby but maybe not as much imagend in the modifications.
That \'report\' was intended to give an insight in owning one of these cars and keeping / improving it.

I keep a running total on how much mine costs so including buying the FD (£6000), having a rebuild (£3000), servicing and insurance (not fuel!!!) and a few other bits I\'ve done I\'ve spent just over £17,000 in about 15 months.

Car arrives off the boat from Japan on the 28th, barring any bad weather (or God forbid the bleedin\' boat sinking !)
Off to the Newera workshop for SVA and registration. Then the mods get fitted. With any luck, I\'ll be knocking up the motorways on the 2nd or 3rd week in September.
Really champin\' at the bit.
This is her as she is just now...

http://www.neweraimports.com/soldcarDetails.jsp?carId=236

This is the lot she\'s going to get hit with at the workshop :D

1999 front bumper unit
Carbon front lip
1999 style front indicator / sidelight clusters
RX-8 Style rear lights
RX-7 Headlamp Air Vent Duct (from R Magic)
Auto-Exe GT rear wing
RE Amemiya AD9 Carbon bonnet
JIC Aluminium Rear strut brace
TriPower twin gauge dash pod, A Pillar Single Pod
Defi 3 x 52mm black face/ white dial gauge set with Defi Link II controller
RAYS Lightweight Forged Alloy Gram Lights 17" wheels
HKS Racing Suction Kit
Apexi Power FC & Commander
Trust Profec B II Boost controller
HKS 76mm downpipe, KnightSports High-Flow Catalyst pipe, HKS Hiper Muffler Cat back system
SARD uprated fuel pump and 850cc secondary injectors
:2eek  :Hammer

I know some people think it\'s mad not to have just bought a modded Rex from someone, but I\'ve got a thing about making something my own. When I saw the condition and mileage (grade 4.5 !!) just had to buy her :cool

It\'s certainly a shame it\'s not a runner but has potential to be one of the most unique rx\'s around Gary.

On mine, including purchase but not running costs, I\'ve spent ~£22k in the last 3 years.

That\'s taken it from standard and very tired (engine and suspension) to 387fwhp.  New turbo kit going on this weekend with all the goodies and mapping will take that to ~25k and ~450fwhp

Might get round to spending some money on cosmetics at some point @Giggle

Owned my FD for 5 months now

7.5k for car
1K rims n tyres
£180 for coilovers (fitted by me)
£120 servicing (by me)
£6 boost gauge holder
£40 wheel alignment
£80 rear tyres (part worns for fun and to tide me over until my rims arrived)
£600 insurance
£320 in bodywork (touch ups)

£9846 -

on average do about 350 in fuel a month too - this car isnt a good decision (financially!) -

i still have to respray and buy a center vent and some 99 spec front lights a steering wheel to make this car 100% complete...  then im onto engine mods.

ok My FC project

700 quid for donor (engine donor)
300 quid for a bit of welding (wasted money as i abandoned that shell)
400 quid for cabrio chassis donor
200 picking cars up cost.
200 quid on various bits and bobs,
20 quid on 17" rims

= £1820

sold spares for £250 - but spent that on tools! i think i still need to spend a couple of hundred on it to get it on the road.

£3250 on UK car with zero compression engine

£800 on low mile engine from crashed car with gearbox, turbos, twin plate clutch and most ancilliaries.

£500 on parts for engine swap, and general tidy up

£250 for two new rear tyres, and balancing all round.

£450 for insurance

£160 tax

£40 MOT

££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££ on petrol when I finaly get to drive her :rollin :3gears-rh

Then I\'ve got an engine to be rebuilt and a gearbox, clutch and turbos to sell.

Looks like she\'s coming in smack on my budget :D

Running already after the engine swap, just waiting on rad fans to replace the knackered ones. Should be on the road start of next month :D

Well, at least you guys can buy the cars cheap overthere.
Here in Belgium I paid over £2000 for my first gen. It needed a sprayjob, and came without engine... I stopped counting LONG ago. But I do remember I payed about 1200€ (£800) for my TII engine ( after using a good strong 12A for two years first), the paint job was cheap at £600 (did all the prep work ourself), there are new Potenza\'s at the rear ( in 15" 225 tyres are not expensive: about £75 each), custom interior (about £200 in material, work done by my mother), Wolf 3D ECU was 500€ (£330) used, coilpacks were £130, fuel pumps over £300 (SX high pressure, Holley blue low pressure), Speedflow braided hoses for over £200... You get the picture.
All in all I spend over £7000 (probable nearer to 8500) on my car, it\'s still not finished, and it\'s just a first gen...
I could have gotten an FD for that money in the UK!

What a thread!! hahaha

FD cost me 10.2K (300rubs of that were for a BS warranty)

so total cost around 17K (including 2years insurance)

If I had to pay for all the labour I\'ve done though and parts I\'ve made I think we\'re heading for the 40Ks with great ease, people rate their time far too highly for my money!! lol

Including the cost of the car I can think of at least 32-33 K and thats just the big bills that I can remember (and not the solicitors fees either or any insurance costs).
