Title: Different IC designs
Post by: Devil\'s Refugee on August 15, 2006, 08:18:20 AM
Ok, happy to be flamed here :flamed  :)

We have front mounts, stock and V-mounts.
Front mounts are great for the temps but restrict the rad, V-mounts may suffer from heat soak if there\'s no vented bonnet, and stock aren\'t really effective enough.

So, my question/ idea is: has anyone thought of positioning a rad and IC side by side ?
What I mean is, is it possible to have both next to each other (whether horizontally mounted or verticle mounted), both sets of dimensions identical so they take  up equal amounts of space and receive unrestricted airflow, but double the core to make up for the lack of width/ length (depending on mounting) ??
Sacrifice might be that the front bumper unit may have to be cut from behind if there\'s a lack of space.

Feasible ??

The other idea I had was to run with 2 smaller ICs like an Audi RS4/RS6 at either side of the front bumper but I think the oil coolers would be affected.

i put my intercooler flat in the bottom of the engine bay where the undertray would go and it works really well, retains the stock rad and works like an upside down V mount.  No need for a vented bonnet though

Have you got any pictures ?
Does it get affected by water at all from surface rain, or can this really only be a good thing, cooling it down further ;)
Any damage to the fins or do you find there\'s less damage this way ?

Sounds like a good idea.

I\'ve found the FD with its gaping cavern in front of the 13B begs to be V\'d (hence, I have! lol) I\'ve never had trouble with heatsoak on V\'mount systems, its all about shielding and ducting.

If you intend to follow this through, I\'d be interested in the results, please keep us posted, its good to experiment with new things.

Could someone give me a note of the dimensions of the stock rad and IC ?
Looking for depth, height and width. Investigating the cost of having a design fabricated so need to understand how much room the original set up take up to judge core depth etc

Speaking with a company about getting a price for fabrication against a quick drawing. If it\'s not overly expensive then I think I might go for it. Will need to wait until the car arrives so I can plan out where the piping and mountings will all go for the final design.
One of the \'benefits\' (if at all) is that the rad fans can be retained across the entire unit, so the IC would get some airflow from this also.

When under boost you\'ll (hopefully) be going faster than the drawing range for a fan so if applied to the IC it would do nothing for flow, other than obstruct.

Sorry can\'t help on the dims, have neither stock item anymore.
