hello all,
I\'m looking at fitting a rotary into a chevette or possibly...an imp !
I used to have a lovely series one rx7 and when I had the engine out I remember it being bloody heavy!
I\'m just wondering if anyone knows the weight of said engines -fully dressed with alt etc.
cheers,
alex
RX8 engine bare wieghs 85kg if that helps give an indication
85 kg ? crikey..thats loads lighter then I thought. I\'m sure the 12A outta my old 7 was loads heavier! I wonder if the Renesis engine is all alloy?
the 12a bare doesn\'t weigh much more to be honest, it\'s the ancillaries that ad to the weight. There is another recent thread on this have a search as I did put up the actual weights of the 12a and 13b (N/A, turbo and REW)
The flywheels make a heck of a difference to the weight I found. I can quite happily lift a bare 13b off the floor to move it a few feet drop it down again etc. but wouldn\'t want to move it too far/too high ! try that with a pinto! after having man handled a K series engine at the weekend I\'d say it was comparable to that if not a little lighter (I think it\'s mostly because it\'s easier to get a hold of as it\'s smaller)
It\'s the size of the rotary that is it\'s main advantage really ... you can really sit them back in the engine bay if you try.
I saw a chevette with a rotary conversion in NZ some years ago. The people that own the Chevron Kit Car factory owned it and it was from memory well and easily done. And it went like a bogey flicked from a finger as well
I\'ll try find the link.
Yeah- the fact you can fit em right back behind the front axle line has always appealed to me. looking at them they always looked like they\'d be quite light so I was surprised at the weight. Maybe i\'m getting weaker in my old age-**** i\'m almost 32!..
I\'ve heard of a few rota chevettes in NZ but never ever seen one. Ideal car for the conversion...and a rotary would make for a tidier engine bay than my last chevette...

2.3 L slant 4 was bloody heavy and too far forward in the bay making the car push quite badly. Torquey as though.
Has anyone in Uk heard of a shoveit with a rotary fitted?
Have an RX8 Brand New and cheap if interested 240bhp out of the box

Ohhh, that is interesting! Does it come with the gbox and ancillaries?
Question.... Is there any scope for running the Rx8 engine on points or would an electronic engine management system be the way to go? Was just wondering whether an old skool/new skool thing might work e.g. rx8 block, dizzy (belt driven??), weber 48. I imagine manifolds etc could be tricky though. I guess throttle bodies and Microtech/Motec would be a better option though, but harsh on the wallet. I hear the rx8 intake manifold is very good though.
Does anyone know of any oldskool rx8 motor conversions. I like the idea.
No just the bare block, I paid £4k for it to go in to a RX7 but the project has never happened, I was going to run it on the Motec M800 I have.

There was a post a while back about a Gen 1 running a Renesis engine in Japan, the write-up was in Japanese though - have a search
