Title: Plumes Of White Smoke
Post by: rmagictastic on August 11, 2006, 09:15:29 AM
Ok, FD 1996

NOT MY CAR!!!

i having a look at a mates for him, it was standing for a long time (8 months). When i went round to get it started it was flooded, so i presume it had been flooded for 8 months (ouch).

any how go it started, and it sat there idleing (sp) absolutely lovely....

BUT... it throws masses and masses of thick white smoke out of the exhaust,
it does not appear to be losing coolant, and there is no champagne bubbles in the filler on start.

Are the seals knackered, or are there any other possibles????????

i have attached a link to a video, watch it when the smoke gets thick in the last 20 secs of the vid, its like that..but more!!!

http://www.davidgeesaman.com/rx7/coolant.AVI

by the way the car takes about 10-15 minutes to stop smoking.

any help??????

cheers

Rmaj

If it\'s been flooded for 8 months, i reckon the fuel has seeped in between the housing and plates deteriorating the coolant seals..sure does look like coolant seal failure to me.

Thing is would\'nt a Coolant seal smoke like that none stop?

I take it there was no sign of this before it was put away?

What does it smell like? (don\'t stick your head up the exhaust though :))

Also how does it start now? if it had that much water in it you\'d have some serious starting problems.

Do you know anyone with one of these? http://www.atkinsrotary.com/store/customer/product.php?productid=16858&cat=568&page=1

I was talking to Nic about this the other day and suggested that after 2years of the car sitting there then it could be the petrol has gone stale (if that makes sense, lost it\'s octane rating) also the fuel might be low. As i had a similar problem on my Golf and turned out was low petrol and was sucking s##t through the system and needed clearing. A good run and fresh fuel cured it straight away.

Or I could be totaly wrong and losing the plot. LOL!

Things to check
1. Get it pressure tested, that will tell you if seals are gone, I thought that the smoke dissapears once the water has been thrown out of the housings.
2. Check that if you have a oil catch tank, the hose to it is not twisted to it as that will cause a pressure build up and through oil out.
3. It could be the turbos knackered, they smoke to the point were you can bearly see the car, you\'ll be burning a lot of oil, take for short run and see if clears and check oil levels after. Take oil with you. Seals in turbo go it just chucks all the oil straight out through the exhaust.

Nick rang me yesterday and sadly this is 99% definite that this is a dead water seal.

Couple of things not mention on this thread that he is going to check, 1 stand around the back and sniff the smoke as it will have a sweet smell as it burns of the anti-freeze ( if it was fuel or oil you would have realised by now)  and then 2 put your palm flat over the exhaust outlet on initial start up before the exhaust system gets hot and can burn the water off and if it\'s got a seal gone then you will normally end up with water droplets on your hand .

someone once said to me and i don\'t know if this works. But you can take the oil filler cap off and then start the engine, then place a tissue over the filler neck and check to see if the tissue has any water build up on it.

Must stress not sure if this works.
