Title: Engine Removal - Bell Housing bolts
Post by: Jit on August 08, 2006, 04:23:04 PM
Hi,

Following on from my last thread, i decided to be bothered today and got a fair way along removing engine...got the downpipe off today finally!!!:god
Also undone all the oil lines and disconected the loom from the ecu and from the engine.
Undone all the clutch pressure plate bolts thru the inspection housing as well.

Now ive managed to undo the 3 bell housing bolts you can see from the top of the engine. Ive removed the starter motor assembly compltely and undone2 bolts from underneat and also the long nut thru the starter.

Now just beine the starter is what looks like a potential 6th (or 7th if you include the long bolt thru the Starter) bellhousing bolt?

Can anyone confirm this is so before i pull it off?

Also does anyone have any good tips on how to remove the 17mm engine mount nuts from underneath because as i understand it now, that all there is left:Thumbsup!

Thanks

Do you have a photo of this suspicious bell housing bolt? I don\'t think they\'re are any more than 6 bolts (Just done mine! :))

The engine mount nuts should not be difficult - 17mm socket, and just undo them.

i dont have a photo lol...yet...my girlfriends coming round later i hope with my digicam and then ill take some...

In case i caused confusion with my previous post...theres 3 that can clearly be seen from above.
These 3 are out

Theres 2 whcih also hold the starter on, these are both also out. Then thres one more towards the drivers side of the car. That too is out

I can see one more bolt which mightor might not  bolt up with the engine its sort of right behind where the starter motor would have been and would only be accesible once the starter motor is out

Thats the one which i cant decide upon!

17mm socket??!! How tf did you get a socket in there from underneath?! The front subframe is in the way isnt it? (actually are you removing the engine mounts with the engine?)

If you remoe the engine munts with the engine, am i right ibn thinking its only one 17mm nut on each side?

Im assuming its 6 nuts if you try and remove the mounts from the engine?

ah, yes, that one. Did it last night. First i put the starter motor in...then noticed there should be a bolt there!! grrr... Yeah, that has to come out.

Remove the engine with the mounts on. Just undo the nuts from under the subframe.....but you can actually take the engine mounts off the engine complete - but, again, the nuts have to be undone from the subframe to mount.

Yup, definately has to come out. I did my engine mount bolts with a ring spanner. Had the nuts holding the motor to the sub fram undone, and lifted it slightly with the engine crane. Loads of room then :D

I\'m just at the stage of putting that bolt under the starter back in... Is there any chance you could measure it for me, please?
I seem to have misplaced it (or it seems that way), and I\'m having a hell of a time getting mazda to source it for me!

I\'m stuck with the long bolt that holds the starter on, and has a nut on the end (way too long), the bolt that holds the alternator on (slightly too long) and the other length of bellhousing bolts (way too short)

If you can measure it, and your alternator bolt (long one it pivots on) it would be a major help!

Cheers

Ian

yeah give me a few mins...just muching at the moment and then ill pop out and measure it :)

Cheers for the help guys....much appreciated!

Just one last point tho...

Will the engine come out if i undo the 1 engine mount to subframe bolt on each side? Or will i still have to remove the mounts from the engine?

Thanks

right....im not good with thread sizes and i dont have a set of verniers to hand so ill give it a shot as follows:

Alternator Long Pivot bolt: 14mm head, 10mm thread i think, overall length of threaded bit and non threaded bit is 103mm of which the last 33mm is threaded

Bolt which goes between starter motor and box (to engine)

head size is 14mm
Total length of threaded bit and non threaded bit is 90mm of which the last 35mm is threaded. thread size appears to be the same as alternotor pivot

Hope that helps. Is it a 14mm nut which holds the engine mount to the subframe?

Thanks

Cheers, you\'re a hero. That clears that little problem up for me.

You\'ll find it much easier to take the mounts off than leave them on. I left them on when I removed my motor, and had a hell of a time (didn\'t know any better at the time) Some advice from Hayward Rotary was a godsend when I came to put it back in. I had the mounts off the engine, dropped it in, and it was really easy to mount it back up. Removing the mounts made removing the downpipe much easier (in fact possible) as well.

Give me a shout if you need anything else. I hadn\'t discovered the club forum before I removed my motor, and I really wish I had. Would have made a few things loads easier. Hoping to fire mine up tonight.... Best of luck with yours! :driving

Can\'t remember what size nut holds the engine to the subframe. Which reminds me that I\'d better put them back on before I fire the thing up!
Sounds plausible that they might be 14mm. Could be 17mm tho... I\'ll have a look at them when I get home

I never even considered removing the mounts from the engine before removal, surely that is a right pain in the a$$? Both my engines came out (and one went back in) with the mounts still attached no problems at all, they are no wider than the engine so dont tend to snag on anything or not fit through gaps.
Plus it means less time spent under the car with a heavy socket held over your head whilst you try and undo nuts with the motive power of swearing alone :)

lol, well all that remains for tommorow is to remove the 2 14mm (im assuming im now looking at the correct nut! - its the only really nut which comes off the subframe in the vicinity of the engine mount) and drag the loom thru the firewall!

All the gearbox bellhousing bolts are off! Im guessing ill also have to disconnect the clutch slave cylinder at some point right? All the 6 pressure plate to flywheel bolts are undone!

Fingers crossed then for tommorow! assuming i can be bothered when i get up!

Also ive undone all the downpipe bolts while the engine was in situ...but it doesnt seem to want to come off the studs...will it come off once i start raising the engine?

Can anyone please confirm the 14mm nut thing for me please! :)

I had a look last night, and they are indeed 14mm.

Good idea to take the slave cylinder off. Only two bolts, and it\'ll come free.

I had to remove my motor with the downpipe in situ cos I didn\'t have enough movement with the mounts on to swing the motor aside and give enough clearance. Wasn\'t pretty. When I asked Hayward what method they use they told me removing the mounts was the easiest way... Really nice bunch of guy, btw. It\'s not that hard, you just have to get a ring spanner in there and undo six bolts.
Don\'t forget the clamp that supports the downpipe at the bottom where it joins the exhaust.

Tried firing mine up last night after mucho fun with the clifford alarm from hell. No joy. :(

Wierd - cos i took my engine out with engine mounts still attached and downpipe removed.

ill ty removing the mounts from the engine anyways....if i can get my hands on a longer 17mm ring spanner!! the one i got is 6inches long!! and when you only weigh 55kg, its not exactly gonna exert a huge turning moment on the bolt is it lol!

There should be 2 17mm or possibly 14mm nuts that hold the engine mounts onto the subframe.... from past experience you are asking for trouble if you try and remove the mounts from the engine as there is not enough room to get the 6 bolts out till you start lifting the engine.
Also you can leave the slave cylinder on as it is not connected to the engine. Make sure you have disconnected the loom from the gearbox and starter and pulled it up onto the top of the engine. Just in case you forgot.

2 on each side? or 2 (1 for each side)?

2 in total - one each side.

It should be pretty straight forward - just do it an inch at a time - that way, if you find there is still something attached, you\'re not going to break it.

Few notes: Remove the part of the loom that goes down to the gearbox from the gearbox.

Also, the clutch line that goes to the clutch slave cylinder on the gearbox has part of it attached to the engine - remove that. 10mm bolt.

Also remember to remove all earth straps and cables from teh engine too.

From memory the bracket for the is held on with the long bolt from the starter. I could be wrong but I\'m almost certain.
I might go and pop my engine out tonight just to check lol
