Hi all
About to buy my first rx7! I am very excited and let me give my props to all the nice people on here. This forum is an extremely helpful/useful information base.
I am based in north london (enfield), and am wondering if something goes wrong with it (Engine wise);
1) where can I get it repaired? Can anyone list some reputable garages please?
2) Also can people list the common problems they have had with their rx7s and the cost of repairing it?
Thanks in advance
C
Welcome to the forum:WaveBye
If i was based in london then i would hesitate to take the beast to Reworx
http://www.reworx.com/contact.htm based in sunny portsmouth:chat
As for the commom problems, i think the main 1 is engine wear and comes with the biggest cost typically 2.5-3k for a rebuild, so i would strongly reccomend having a compression test done to attain the condition before you buy.
Other than that, the turbo change over pipes/solenoids (ratsnest) is a stupidly overcomplicted design and leads to turbo boost problems, so if its fitted with a boost gauge make sure its boosting right.
A good thing with these cars is the standard clutch and gearbox can usually take a beating so not to much to worry about.
The usuall big expense for RX7 owners is the fuel bill:2eek :Giggle
dont expect much more than 20mpg
Hope that you get a nice one matey, all the best:WaveBye
mate your so lucky to be getting your first rex I used to live in enfield lock dont no if you no around there. anyway I moved to Milton Keynes now an there aint no speed cams or humps paradise!!!!!
Anyway I\'m getting my rex in the winter (cheaper) be careful in enfield police always lookin to pull rx7\'s mate!! anyway keep me posted on your purchase thanks mate.
Thanks for your responses. the rex i am going to buy has actually had a rebuild from reworx 3000 miles ago. Unfortunately there is no receipt but I will call reworx on Monday to check.
What compression results should I expect for a recently rebuilt engine?
Also why do police want to pull over rx7s in enfield? can police give me 3 points for no catalytic converter if they do stop me?
why is there no receipt? Theres a couple of guys over E London way apparently that do rotary engine work??
im looking to buy my first aswell, but think im going to wait for a few months ten go for it.
something thats never really put me off is the sometimes problematic engine, to me i see it as a hobby/project. been wanting to buy one for years but its just never been feasable. recently sold nissan gtir so im kinda used to the crappy fuel economy:)
have to thank everyone on this site for all the information, its priceless! i\'ll b sure to keep everyone up to date and im looking forward to rx7 ownership!!!
Yeh thanks too for all the replies and info.
What garage in e.london to rebuilds?
I need a CAT1 alarm & immob. fitted. Any recommendations ? (money is tight after I\'ll pay car until next payday)
Will ask as to why no receipt. I will check with reworx on monday anyhow. I trust the seller - he is a big poster on here and the rx has a big reworks sticker on the back!
It all seems too good to be true. I have been having butterflies all week!!
Whats really funny is after going for a test drive in it, you get the rx7 curse. You won\'t stop thinking about buying it after that!
THE CURSE OF RX7 - lol
Why would u need a rebuild if its only just been done?
I don\'t need rebuild just thinking long term.
I just got the compression figures.
Front rotor 6.9 7.5 7.2
Rear rotor 7.5 7.7 7.7
Does that sound right/ok for a car which has done 3k miles on a new engine?
C
Urm that seems a uneven??
The rear rotor seems good if not a little low but the front seems a little low? if my motor had done 3k i\'d expect it to be low 8\'s and both front and rears to be the same withing .2 of a bar?
If you don\'t mind me asking is it used much? and when it is used is it driven realy carfully and not opened up?
I ask becouse the 6.9 on the front rotor is possably a sticky side seal which is a classic sign of not being hammered since its rebuild, you may get a better reading if you gave it some Abuse on the way to have it Comp tested :)
I\'d have no idea if its used much.
When I went for a test drive it was given a bit of a abuse:InLove but i am still abit unsure whether to go ahead.
Hmmm...

You\'d have to be realy unlucky to get your emitions checked at the side of the road? in an Rx7 your more likely to get 3 points for speeding ;)
You may find there is a Marked Rx7 in your area thats proberly why they get more intrest than most, the problem with Sevens with Decat pipes and Cat backs fitted is you can here them being opened up quite a long way and its distinctive, so just be a little carfull where and when you open it up or you may find your self attracting the wrong attention.

Your best of Talking to Reworx, ask when it was Done and what they think of the Comp results?
If you don\'t mind me asking who did the Comp test for you? was it done at a garage? And at What Mileage (Was it done recently)
If its only done 3k it may be that the guy doesn\'t want to thrash it knowing how much hes just spent having it rebuilt so the bit of Abuse may have been for your Benfit and it may have done it good.
reworx did rebuild and the compression results!
was done the dday i saw it i think (this sat)
Ok what i\'m getting at is the Rotary engine suffers from Sticking seals when its run for long periods (like run in) without being opened up, if it was Comp tested when it had not been Abused since its rebuild it will show a lower figure.
I think you may find if you gave it a good thrashing then had it done again you would get a diffrent result (Most likely higher)
Ok thanks. That sounds good (I think). Will call reworx tomorrow. Why is it buying this rx7 seems like the biggest decision of my life?!
Is it worth getting it RAC\'d/AA inspected? Or do they know next to nowt about rx7s.
C
If your thinking of getting it AA/Rac inspected to be quite honist you would be better taking it to Reworx and get them to check it over, As you say This is not some thing the AA/Rac would know alot about.
If you get some one that knows about Rx7\'ns and has owned them in both stock and tuned versions they can tell you quite easy if its mechanicly good or not by driving it. I\'d say you need to talk to Reworx.
Thanks - I will call them 2mrrw. I hope they are honest!!
those numbers are a bit low for a supposedly rebuilt engine....and reworx will tell you that the numbers are all fine and well within mazda specification.....but thats not the point...as chris said, for static compression figures, Id be hoping for low 8s.
do you use msn btw?
Yes but it has been known for a good engine to give poor figures when its been driven Conservatively for a long period of time (Like when its been run in) I\'d say by looking at the figures and knowing Reworx Reputation i\'d say it wanted a good Thrashing before it was Comp tested, i\'d bet its suffering a bit of Carbon Build up around the seals.
TBH it does\'nt add up, if its a 3k Engine thats been done by Reworx as you say it should be higher than that and i know from Experiance its possable to drop your Compresion if you Drive off boost for along time, so i\'d guess it must have been done not to long after the Run in.
how about this one? http://www.mazdarotaryclub.com/forums/showthread.php?t=28491
