Title: Fuelling Solution
Post by: FLAT4MATT on August 04, 2006, 10:24:38 AM
So last night after a VERY late finish from work I needed some stress relief, so took a detour on the way home... You get the idea (1/4 tank of fuel in about 10mins)...

So I get home set the turbo timer to 5 minutes and review the maximum figures from the Apexi FC.

FOOOKIN ELL 94% Injector duty!!!

Not good

Now I admit I was giving it some (WOT right up to 7.5-8krpm) but I\'m still running only 0.74 boost.

So...

For insurance purposes I won\'t be going single turbo anythime soon so I need a fuel solution that\'ll cope with a maximum of 350hp.

The car is a 92 type r, the motor is running the following:

 - 99 spec turbos
 - HKS RS Induction
 - Racing Beat Cat Back (Soon to be replaced with a turbo back 3" system)
 - Large SMIC with hard pipes
 - Apexi FC

So the next step in my view (from reading previous posts) is a bigger fuel pump (044) and bigger (1600cc) secondary injectors.

What\'s everyone elses thoughts?

Also any recommendations on where to buy from, it there an all in one solution?

Also the car was dyno\'d at 242RWHP at WGT in December :3gears-rh

start with injector service, if they havn\'t been done since you got the car, they\'re probably well overdue and it does seem to be a key point that car modifiers overlook.

Best Of Luck Fella

you could buy them and fit them yourself

prob worth speaking to pip and get him to supply and fit and tune at the same time

get ready for spending £££ though :D

Been advised to get a nice fuel pressure reg for mine when I have it done (just to throw one more in for you! :D)

Im thinking of doing the 1680 (or whatever they are) on secondary and leaving 550s in primary, with uprated pump and FPR - and no  I have looked at NO prices yet! too scared! :o

Dont mind spending £££ it\'s when it gets to ££££££££££££££££££££££££££ that I\'ll be worried ;)

Other thing i noticed last night is an oil leak at the back of the motor, which is a pain in the arse :(

Think I\'ll be giving Pip a ring...

One thing I did find that made quite a difference apart from what has been said before - change your fuel filter. Rear oil seal that is the most likely culprit, gearbox, clutch and flywheel removal to sort it. With the list of mods you are running sort the filter and injectors and you should be OK up to .9 any more than that and I would be looking at making sure your engine is strong enough to take it and that all your ancilaries are up to it [cooling ect.]

what ever the cost of the bits you need to add a rolling road mapping session.

Speak to the tuners with a rolling road and they will be able to tell you exactly what you need to do to cover the mods you have but if yo ultimately want to go single, then the mods you do now should be made to cover the sort of power you hope to make so that you dont do something now only to find you have to do it again when you do more mods.

Thanks for all the suggestions, I think i\'ll give Pip a ring at WGT, he\'s probably the nearest specialist and he mapped the car for the previous owner.

I know all about future proofing my mods from my experiences with the bugs, I went through four engine\'s worth of parts due to constantly changing what i wanted before I actually bit the bullet and built the motor. Just have to sort the fuelling on that and it should see low 12\'s.

I was kinda hoping i could have the FD running similar times on twins and still be able to get to and from work in it.

Cheers, Matt

Its very acheivable fella.

Best of luck!

You will want to do both the injectors and fuel pump at the same time as one really requires the other (as with all upgrades).  I was advised to upgrade my fuel pump wiring at the same time (mine was done at RE-Worx).

As you have said, 92% injectory duty cycle is a bad thing - you should never go above ~80%.

Yeah I know that mate, wiring is something i hadn\'t thought of... Would the bigger pump draw more current?

Would I need bigger fuel lines? I\'d imagine it\'s best to replace whats there for newer stuff anyway while the pump is getting done etc.

depends on how big you intend to go, stock fuel lines are ok for big singles running below 1bar, bigger fuel pump is required as well as a rising rate FPR, it realy comes down to how far you want to go.

Something like 044 fuel pump, new filter, FPR, 850 primaries, 1600 secondaries a biggish turbo + a well ported engine with all the other bits should see you to 400ATW @ 1bar

Not going that far to be honest.

It\'s my daily driver so can\'t really get too silly, fuel bills are bad enough as it is and reliability a big factor.

I think 300 at the wheels wil be plenty for me, another 60 or so horses...

So 044 pump, new filter, fresh fuel lines, regulator and 1600 secondaries will see me fine? Now I guess I have to price them up...

I\'m selling a few bits and bobs at the weekend at a swap meet / vw show and if it all shifts i should have something in the region of £1-1.5k to play with...

300atw you can do that on twins or a small single TO4E sort of size, you need the bigger injectors and fuel pump as for the rest a bit of overkill.......... unless you end up going for more
